what a machine ! i remember the brand new space invaders cabinet being installed in our local sports centre around 1979-80. people used to queue to play it. i feel so privileged to of lived through the entire video arcade/console years . at 50 yo iam still gaming on my xbox one and iam lloking forward to the release of the new xbox x series.
Very cool, I'm a little younger so didn't see Space Invaders when it came out... to me it was when Street fighter II showed up, I remember seeing it shortly after it came out and being blown away... not quite the same as a Space Invaders, though :)
I was 11 years old and I was amazed and addicted to this game when I first saw it. The sound reminded me of the jaws movie.
I also feel blessed to have “been there”. I still play all the old school games it makes me feel young again. I miss those days!

I played this when it first came out.
Kids today wouldn't understand how great it was. It was like science fiction or something. Those sounds will always have a place in my heart.

Congrats on getting this machine working. I played this particular model of Space Invaders at a KOA campground welcome center, back in 78. And I think we were even in your state, at the time, on our way to DC, on a family road trip. I've not seen this model, ever since then. Thanks for sharing this.
In about 2008 I know we still had some games (the guy I was working for) in the KOA near Statesville, NC but if you were going to DC I'll bet you were farther east. They just had them sitting out in a big covered pavillion, it was pretty wild!
That does sound pretty wild. Well, we were going up, through Mississippi, then, Tenn, area, and then headed east.
The first Space Invaders game I played was at Bresler's Ice Cream in Salem Oregon in 1979. I love how they created the 3D effect and fake color. Cutting edge. Makes the game extra special today! Great, Iconic, Classic, Awesome, Timeless.

Yes indeed.this channel is bringing back some memories. first video game ever played at local K&B drugstore on west bank.man did i feed some quarters in that one. first stop after work. back in those days, this first full game looked unbelievable and magical and more addictive and expensive than Colombian gold which was going for 10 dollars an ounce.
It had a heck of a look to it :) I don't know if I mentioned it in this video but my old boss worked for a company that saved all these old Space Invaders after the newer games came out, and had them all stacked 6 or 7 high, on their side, in an old mill in Greenville, SC. Big old huge mill full of retired games, then they had an auction and started selling it all off, the whole place was full of crap.
I have Space Invaders that year same one you are repairing got mine on the side of the road people got rid of it because it didn't work I brought it home repaired it and restored it . It is still working
after 40 years in my game room

They definitely made keying for the connector. That is why there are slots between each pin. They did have a tendency to fall out however.
I want an old game like this but they are getting scarce and crazy expensive. I partially paid for college fixing these. For some reason I fixed a lot of Tempest games. It was easy, 95% were just bad power supplies.
I've got a Tempest we're going to be working on the next couple weeks, hope it's just the power supply :)
i had one of these in the mid eighties and guess what, the same issues you came across here.. Sadly at that time no one capable of repairing it wanted to touch it.. Great to see one back in action.

in texas many of the cabinets would have no back. Used to be fun to look back there as a kid and put them into cocktail mode.
I never did find out what cocktail mode did. Game still cost the same.
The cocktail mode was the sitdown version, all it did was when you play two players, it makes the second player be upside down :)

This was the first arcade game I ever played.. End of the 70s or early 80s. I have very vivid memories at it was such an amazing game for the time.
Most people will remember it having a joystick while the controls are actually all buttons. Even the small crappy mini version I have uses a joystick for movement.
Yeah if you think about it, nothing had a joystick back then, LOL I guess there may have been a couple, but buttons ruled at the moment....

I didn’t actually ‘see’ my first Space Invaders cabinet back when it was first released here in the UK…. No, I ‘heard’ it… the BASS sound of the advancing invaders carried about 50metres outside of the Arcade which was on the seafront in Aberystwyth, Wales…. This must of been sometime around 1978/9.. I was about 11 or 12yrs old so for me, it was science fiction 😂👌

I lost count of the number of days I bunked off school and went to Counterpoint Records in Forest Hill to play this, Defender, Asteroids, Galaga and others.
The other issue with the edge connector in these games is that they had a very small contact area. So not only did they lose their tension, but they were weak from the start. The IDC wire terminations were another weak point, as well as the 90 degree angle that the wires came out at and pressed against the cabinet. Not sure why they didn't use a 180 degree connector with wider pins when they built these.
There was a design theory in effect at the time, that basically they wanted the things to last about 2 years, so when we look at it now some things are designed with what looks like a long term reliability in mind (the coin door, the glass bezel, the controls, etc.) and other things like the connector etc. aren't very reliable at all

It's basically glorified TV repair! I'm working on a board right now, it has a very minor fault, I'm reduced down to just replacing all of the chips 1 by 1. I've replaced 17 chips so far without fixing it.

I am working on my first project, a completely dead Space Invaders. I really enjoyed watching your steps and found it inspiring. It helps me not to feel so over my head. I have managed to repair the power supply in three stages now. I'm still needing to get the 12V to work though. One step at a time. Thanks you so much for doing this for us.
Very cool man, you can get it going. The power supplies are pretty simple, just test through each part like you did on the other sections....

Yeah I'm old the back in the 80s I held the town record for galaxian. Point is I miss those days all those good games.
That plug is a elco plug.. a lot of AMF bowling machines 8270 s in particular have that plug for the power masking and pindication...

Elco the company, has distributors but they know you need their products and can be pretty pricey and want you to buy in bulk.... I wished I'd of known about that blue plug, that it was available..
Quite a few of the plugs I needed could have been replaced....I went thru Digi- key but had no luck.... The bowling center I worked at made me get salvage parts so I could get used pigtails and wire them in. .
Depending on the age I remember they just got lazy and put up green cellophane on the monitor for the shields. Newer models did not do that and used a real color monitor.
Few 1970s arcade games had color monitors. By about 1981 it was de rigeur.
a dual trace or quad trace oscilliscope would really help you with the diagnostics and provide a visual reference for the viewers

Thanks! I have a similar problem, the ram test doesn't work at all, but the line pattern is "normal". Now i'm waiting for replacement ram ics. I will try some soviet-clones of 2107s from epay.
the Soviet stuff is all high quality and it's generally the actual correct part, a lot of the stuff you buy from the US is just stuff the seller bought from China. Also the stuff from Israel is usually good stuff...

I found out about it one day I found a $20 on the street back in the day and I got it cashed all in quarters and put in like 5 coins in so I can keep playing and
a rich family with kids went to the store and let their kids stay in the front and one of the older sons demanded to be next with his hands of coins in tow.
I told him it would be a while as I put my coins in the game already and he refused to give me any and we started fighting and it was then when my knee
banged against the coin return plate that I heard the coin sound credit play.
You hooligans and your free credits :) They say you could do it with a straw too on Donkey Kong but I'm not sure....

Wow... What poor customer service! I'll make sure to stay away from Midway products as they seem to make up excuses rather than back up their products! I'm surprised that there hasn't been a class action lawsuit against on all these Space Invaders games prematurely dying out! :D
I’d just like to throw in the fact that no clock means no DRAM refresh, which in turn can murder DRAMs en-masse. That and accidentally inflating the supply rail (oops, my bad a couple of weeks ago).
I wasn't aware of that, that's pretty wild, without the clock signal the ram may die? I'll have to be careful of that!

questions: I am working on a newly acquired SI. After building the power supply, following you example, the word TILT and the letter G appears and disappears on the screen. I can add credits, but won't allow the game to play. Do you think the G refers to the G PROM?
Jeremy it may have something to do with that, yes... but I have never seen one say Tilt. I've heard people mention it before though. I'd check first to make sure the voltage is 5 volts or higher on the actual board (not at the power supply).
Love this game. The 1st game I played!!! The CCoin and the it shoots the first C!
Yeah, they were doing a good job of trying to give the invaders a little personality :) Then on the second one they used to have their UFO stall out between boards, LOL

If you have vertical collapse, you would see a line all the way across the screen of video, but it'd be really thin. Can you see anything on the screen?
Great video! I was hoping you could tell me, on the upright midway space invaders 11 pin connector; what is the pin 10 "V. Audio Return" and pin 11- "V.Audio" for?
Does this pin11 need 12-18v for the sound to work?
The "V. audio Return" is ground, the "V.Audio" is the positive voltage just as you said.... They original came from the power supply, if yours is messed up and you have the original power supply, there is a diode just below the power supply connector that goes open sometimes and makes the sound voltage disappear. Also the fuse in the bottom that runs the marquee lights also runs the sound voltage... so if it's blown you'll lose it too.

Joe, love the video,helps out alot, have the same problem.. its telling me H11....you mention chip 2107 and socket . I can't find that chip, can you tell me where I can find them and what socket

Sure John, there's a place called Arcadechips.com that should have those 2107's you need... I don't know if they sell sockets, but basically you count the number of legs on that chip and you can order a socket with that number of legs on it. So it may be for instance 18 legs, if I was just guessing :) You can get the sockets pretty inexpensively on ebay, the hard part is the desoldering!
@@LyonsArcade joe, thanks for the reply, I have the Braze multi kit on it, and it has a ram test which beeps out which ram is bad...I don't have the burn ram test chip.... I replaced a couple of ram chips with the socket, per the beeps on the chart, but it keeps telling me H11( D) in your video..after I replaced it. and I can't see anything wrong with the traces, but its out of my experience.....Any ides ? also do you repair the pcb boards? Thanks

Would the same way to test ram work on this as in a commodore 64? Basicly you take a spare ram chip and just push it on top of a ram chip on the board so the pins touch and when it starts to work you know wich one is broken.
It only works sometimes but yes it would prob point to the bad one....

Unplug the gameboard in case the voltages are wrong, and then check them from the individual pins coming out of that one big plug connected to the power supply, the voltages are in the manual, if you don't have it you can download it at www.KLOV.com on the Space Invaders page...

We've got the same cabinet. Here's the problem the fire button stopped working. When I check the voltage the switch was at 1 volt while the other buttons were at 5v as expected. I traced and measure the voltage back to the board with the console harness disconnect and still 1v. Any ideas where to look or what might be needed to fix it?
Make sure the dipswitches didn't get bumped around, there's a weird thing on Space Invaders where if you turn certain dipswitches on or off, it turns some of the buttons on or off (it had something to do with the two player option)...
I have a 1978 all original space Invaders like this machine you're showing here the machine works I have to turn the button on and off multiple times and after a while it warms up and works but sometimes there's white dots on the screen sometimes you can play it for a while and then the white dots will appear and it'll act funny but I mean this thing is all original I found movie tickets in it from 1983 for the movie cujo!!! The serial number is 0808 I would like to give this thing a tune-up and make it last for another 40 years and maybe add one of those the 8 game expansion packs I saw online to it possibly the only thing really wrong with it is the white dots appearing and it needs a new bulb for the background to light up and some lights for the quarter sign on the door

I'm new to this but why did some old games reflect a reverse image onto a mirror instead of just pointing the screen right at the player ? Is that to save space at the back of the cabinet or to keep the center of gravity low in the cabinet?
There were two reasons they did it. in Space Invaders they did it because by using that mirror, you could put artwork behind the two-way mirror that lights up, this makes it look like the screen is floating in space. So the computer was only capable of creating the images on the screen, all the background stuff was actually in the cabinet, and viewable behind the image, which you can't do with a regular tube and the processing power they had at the time. so imagine like Super Mario Brothers, but the computer is only strong enough to create Mario and the moveable characters, but not the background. The background would be in the cabinet behind the mirror so the characters looked like they were moving over it.
Some of the even older gun games used a mirror because it made the cabinet look really long when you looked at the image, so you'd be looking at a reflection in the bottom of the cabinet, that looked like it was 5 feet away where the cabinet was only 2 feet thick.

If that were my machine, I'd ask you to replace all the ram chips. You're already there and so many were bad already, I wouldn't want to have to call you back out later.

Would using a 60-1 board and turning off all the other games be a solution? I have one that will not boot and I am unable to find anyone that still repairs these boards.
That won't work unfortunately because the monitor in this game is black and white it won't hook up to the multigame board. You'd have to change the monitor, the power supply, and all the wiring and you'd end up with a machine that would be worth less money....
There is a guy on ebay that fixes them, type space invaders repair on ebay and check him out.

what are those blobs of solder on the boards - is that circuit from the other side of the board? almost looks like a circuit just ends abruptly.
Not sure which ones you're mentioning but yes when a circuit just ends with a piece of solder usually that's a via that runs through to the other side of the board and continues there.
@@LyonsArcade Did you see my question about the process from when a coin is inserted? Just curious if you could kind of walk through the process in another video or maybe you have a video where the coin reader was failing or it didn't give the player credits.
I would really enjoy to see a seawolfadt mission resurrection have one all the way in Hawaii completely dead was working at one point saw one of fans not running started to act up on me ended up sparking while I was trying to repair one doesn't do anything

Hi, i recently came across a Pac man machine, not sure the model, its not the large machine, it looks like a little brother machine lol.. Like i said i have no clue about these machines,, the machine turns on but the game looks off, like different items stacked on each other say like 3 packmans over lapping each other,, my father thinks its the board.. He wanted me to find someone to send board to to get repairs. would that be something yall could look at and repair?

Jody Space Invaders was definitely first, if you think about it remember Space Invaders was black and white, Pac-Man was glorious blue and yellow :)

I've never seen that one, but it's a Gameplan which makes them a little more tricky to work on. Depending on the level of repair it needs, anywhere from $300 to $1000, I hate using the word Restore though, we like to say "repair" or "renovate" restore sounds like we're making it new and we're not really able to make them look new.
