One of the few people to get a metal Grammy who actually play bone shattering metal
6 people in the audience know who this band is.
If Trivium won there’d be way more noise
Most people in that audience don't know great music. Oh well it's their loss. Congrats to high on fire
And three of them are in the band. LOL.
You mean the 6 people in attendance.
What audience?
Matt Pike on stage, with a shirt on, giving a shoutout to Kurt Ballou, with a Tomahawk intro. What a time to be alive.
what a time indeed
The Metal Hunter good ear
Kept on reading that as Mike Patton was wearing a shirt, was so confused. Not proud to say it took like 4 read throughs....
Dude I thought the same thing.
Yeah, the intro was very unexpected. I'm pretty sure it was "God Hates a Coward" from their debut album.
Stoner Metal recognized for a Grammy...we have come a long way since Jethro Tull
@Joe Orzech
- Nah...Electric Wizard, Windhand, High on Fire, Monolord, Conan, Yob, Bongripper, etc.
-Stoner Metal is alive and well
Give me a break - This was yet another year when a grammy member has a daughter whose boyfriends cousin knows a guy that is into Metal and he said that he likes this band. Or like opening up a phone book randomly and pointing in it and saying; "THIS one". Plus the "category" is a joke. Why not "Best Metal Album", why? Because these idiots don't believe Metal bands create "Albums" as a whole, they want Hit Singles. Believe me, I used to be "hopeful" that the grammys would get their shit together, but after talking with 3 members of the organization, the rest of the members care more about popularity (time constraints, music that's easy on the ears etc.) than actual music or any respect for Metal (or Progressive Rock). Just look at the audience, most went to get a smoke or take a breather from the over-hyped conveyor belt of crap people consider music. Awards don't keep Metal alive, its the"people" from all over the world that keep it going.
There are TONS upon tons of Metal bands, and "1" band is going to represent the "best performance"?
@@mvunit3
In some ways I agree with you, but metal shows in Atlanta don't have any trouble selling tickets. If you want to look popularity of Metal (obviously not mainstream) you can go to Banger TV CZcams channel or Metaheads Amino app.
@@jbk007311 - Metal shows probably have no problem selling tix anywhere ;). Though I never said Metal "isn't" popular, but the best of it wont be found on the radio, more likely a podcast or internet radio station that caters to classic and new music. There are no "shores" around the world that are safe from Metal, as metal bands are practically from every continent now, as seen on "Banger TV". Though I have a few bones to pick about Banger's knowledge on the origins of Prog Metal, they do help metal (and subgenres) stay alive (for those that haven't checked them out: czcams.com/users/BangerFilmsInc ).
Again, for the past maybe 25+ years, Metal no longer needs to thrive on popularity among the mainstream, as the genre thrives on its fans. I'm more into the underground and obscure bands myself, but even bands like Opeth and Meshuggah are considered "mainstream" these days (which is still weird to me), while others who have been around even longer are not well known. And then you have the bands that are still fighting on that started in the 70's.
I've been a Metalhead since 1981, and I write about its rich history (especially Prog Metal) for fun and still, I'm a bit behind on many bands from the past 2 years or so. That's why, as I mentioned before, its almost ridiculous to have "1" band represent the whole of Metal, because it has soo many subgenres and bands (just go to my channel, and pick a "themed" playlist and find almost all subgenres of Metal, Rock and Progressive Rock).
But Metal will always survive, even if the record industry is messed up, and long after those "flavors of the weak" that are championed by the grammy's are dead and gone. Metal (and Prog) will always challenge the listener, think outside of the box and break rules to keep it all going, and it has "longevity". Some metalheads are stuck in the 80's or 90's, but the music keeps pushing forward to find new fans, even someone like me at 55 \m/.
@@jbk007311 - btw nice list. I still listen to; Operator Generator, Sheavy, St. Vitus, Trouble, Confessor, Solitude Aeturnus, Cathedral, Candlemass, My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, Katatonia, The Ocean, While Heaven Wept, Draconian, Shape of Despair, Novembers Doom and other doom/stoner bands. Also take a listen to Monkey3 and Khemmis.
Look Grammy people; A real band. Mind boggling I know.
They arent that retarded you know?
@@leetorry they are mate.
Fucking right. People are like which one of those is the pretty boy and who uses the laptop on stage...
@@leetorry if they weren't, they would clap for respect
Man...they had to WALK FAR to get their Grammy...
That's what happens when you get placed in the very far back because they don't respect you
Reverse racism...
Metal is still a disrespected, disregarded art form.
should have seen the year Megadeth won, they had to walk down from the balcony..
Metaphorically and physically.
Pretty sad how metal is not televised. Ridiculous.
Michael Canada never heard of that metal show huh
Headbangers ball used to be a thing. 2019 is just about hip hop I guess.
@@ALRIHAE not the first year this shit happens
It's more metal to not be nationally televised on the Grammy stage
@@rubyredz5663 He means the metal awards portion of the Grammys is not televised genius.
Holy shit the lord of the riff Won grammy, the world is a slightly better place today.
Even if the Grammys suck I'm incredibly happy to see these dudes get the accolades they've earned.
Why is it that metal/rock bands are so chill. These rappers and pop stars are so full of themselves.
jeffhardy181371 you would say the same with other rock/metal bands, alot of rappers and pop stars are pretty chill too
@@leetorry Nah they extra. Metal bands are chill and humble.
Lol. That’s why within the metal and rock community there’s always reports of a number of bands being anything but chill. But if they were, the fanbase is for sure far from chill.
@@BickleBungle1991 Where are these so called reports? Cuz if you were to watch an interview with metal bands they are extremely chill.
@@jeffhardy181371 "Extra"? What does that even mean in that context?
So much disrespect from the mainstream music industry toward Rock & Metal bands.
yeah but who cares
Arent we lucky! ;)
Yeah same as country and jazz.
Nowdays grammy is just about fake music
Seeking respect is not metal dude
Imagine winning a Grammy, but not knowing how to hold a chord properly..
they should have received a grammy for their debut album
There is no award worthy of that masterpiece of an album.
Why does matt pike have a shirt on
It is a distraction from the cane.
@@aidanrichards6046 i tought the cane was the distraction from the fact he wears a shirt
I'm pretty sure he's paid actors
It's his only shirt in his entire wardrobe, only worn for special occasions.
Someone threw that shit on him on his way to the stage...
That guy that read the nominees couldn’t give less of a fuvk
He's not exactly a fan, huh?
That's Shaggy. A reggae singer.
Humble and down to earth for a man who writes pummeling songs for the apocalypse.. Congrats HOF
Oh man if anyone deserves a Grammy its Matt Pike. All three of them really. And they're so humble about it. I love it. Fuck the Grammy's tho
You mean the other Matt, the better Matt and I mean Matt heafy
I find the audience's lack of enthusiasm disturbing
They only care about rap and pop.
They only know the garbage top 40 shit
I find the lack of audience amusing!
@@blakkno666 C'mon, there had to be at least 3 dozen people there😂
The mainstream music industry sucks
Sad the people that actually play instruments, write their own material, and actually tour are completely looked over by a so called music award. But someone who sings lyrics written by someone else, over samples of music written by someone else make millions, pathetic
Do you see U2?
It really is pathetic. Most people wouldn’t know music with talent if it bit them in the ass
i coulda sworn that guy with the cane was matt pike if he didn't have a shirt on
Can't believe a deserving band won a Grammy.
This was rather surprising since I didn't think they would win, but they did.
Way to go, High on Fire!
The metal is so heavy he needs a cane.
Much respect for these men 🤘🏻 Finally winning a Grammy and then paying thanks to their friends, family & colleagues without the BS that is so often shown at these moments. I think that Hip Hop, R&B, Pop etc could learn a lesson from the Metal scene.
The only thing the people who play Hip Hop/R&B/Pop/whatnot would "learn" would be trying to imitate a metal sound, just so they could be "hardcore". They have no sense of generosity like how Matt Pike and company displayed here.
what are you talking about, almost every award speech from those genres pay thanks to their friends, fans and colleagues. generalizing much?
Heath McKinley hell even Drake’s acceptance speech was great, semi trashed the Grammies in a subtle way
Heath McKinley I love metal but close minded metalheads like you are annoying to deal with
Luis X. Rivas all I said was that those artists in those other genres often bring a bunch of BS with them. I didn't say all of them & I didn't say all the time. Calling me a closed minded metal head based off one comment would be equally closed minded don't you think?
So many empty seats.
was this after the main awards o before ?
@@Nightwalkersband I think it's either in a different hall OR most celebrities use these "minor awards" to go out, take a piss, get pictures outside and then come back for "Best Pop Album" and stuff like that
it's the preshow i think.
@@Nightwalkersband This was before. The mainstream masses hate anything that is not rap or pop.
@@DEthe5150 or maybe they aren't into them or don't know they exist
Saw these guys several times, way back when they started in 1999. All they had was a 3-song EP out. They'd come play here in New Orleans at a lil hole-in-the-wall: The Dixie Taverne. I knew as soon as I heard them that they were onto something killer. Really cool guys to boot -- caught a nice buzz w/ them on a few occasions! CONGRATS -- you deserve it.
Jason Pizzolato Same. Matt Pike used to bartend at a bar in Oakland that I use to go to. Super funny dude.
Jason Pizzolato from Apostasy... Haha. I remember you from high school brah..
They've paid their dues. Time for acknowledgment from the industry.
Metal/rock needs its own "Grammy's" of sorts.
cokerockstop2 You'd have to find someone sober enough to organize it.
Golden Gods Awards...
Raymond Wright bahahahahaha
Uh the golden gods
Metal Hammer
Youre welcome
The Grammys actually making a good decision? Wow. Hell is freezing over today!!
Well deserved! What a time to be a fan of Stoner/Doom!
Hear, hear!
\m/ \m/

Shaggy handed a Grammy to Matt Pike. I've seen it all
Hell ya! Well deserved for a hard working band! Also Tomahawk, super dope!
I'm so happy for these guys
Me too.
They play instruments, can you belive that?!?!
High On Fire for life baby!
“I believe the signs of the reptile master!”
BtBAM is one of my favorite bands and I knew they wouldn’t win but it was cool to see them get recognized.
The Grammys are a disgrace!!! Never changes with them not televised metal. If they are not gonna be on TV why even bother having a Nominees for that genre?! It's a slap in face to the bands and their fans. I personally don't listen to them considering that listen to more heavy/Symphonic style of metal like Epica, Nightwish, Dream Evil, Unleash The Archers, Wolfchant, Manegarm. Screw the Grammys and take middle finger and shove it!!!
Oh!!! Those audiences who didn't clap you are a bunch rude ppl.
@Joe Orzech Yeah that's, hmmm, wow.....
The Grammys have always been a joke. If I was in a band that won a Grammy, I'd wonder what we're doing wrong.
@Joe Orzech Soul Train lol wow, well not as bad as Metallica singing with Lady Gaga...Metallica isn't even thrash metal anymore, hell Megadeth and Testament stayed to their roots and they are as old as Metallica.
@Joe Orzech 😭😭😭😭 metalheads want the old Metallica back😭😭😭
@Joe Orzech Testment and Megadeth are the last old Thrash metal out but I do think their new stuff is heavier especially Testment little bit of death growls which is awesome. Now I listen to Scandinavian metal, they have very good bands like Amon Amarth, Wolfchant, Manegarm..Unleash The Archers are a very good power metal band and the lead singer has some wicked pipes.
We want a live broadcast
should've went up there shirtless on edibles
Kurt Ballou keep up the amazing work. So glad you're starting to get recognition for the work that you do.
Matt Pike's amputated big toe is heavier than anything Trivium has ever written. Congrats, gents!
The music playing on the PA as High On Fire heads toward the stage is "God Hates A Coward" - Tomahawk (Mike Patton). Good point. Great tune.
Congrats For The Grammy!!!!
Metal RULES! YEAH!!!!! Congrats High On Fire!
Could you imagine a live performance by HoF? Minds melted. Sure love to see that!
notice how far back (in the "nosebleeds") they were seated- the cameras were spinning randomly for almost 30 seconds trying to find them!
They should have made a comment about the lack of attention metal gets at the Grammy awards
"wow what a trip"
Still proud to see the guy I worshipped who lived down the street from me in Cupertino, CA back in the late 80s, early 90s get famous and win a well deserved award.
This is such an iconic moment for the doom world. These men never get enough credit and it's a fucking shame.
That’s fucking awesome! Matt Pike is my spiritual animal.
Matt’s walk up to the stage. He looked so happy
0:04 to 2:14= Musicians that can sing, play instruments, and write their own songs; yet get *zero* media support. 2:24 to 2:33= Performers that cannot sing, cannot play an instrument, and have others write their music; and get 100% media support.
Ok boomer
Because the hipsters like watered down fake bullshit it's cheap and trending
Yep disgusting..
I noticed that Deafheaven got nominated, and thought, "Well, it's good that they didn't win the award."
Also, congratulations, Matt.
Metal may not televised. But when television will die, metal will live on !
I wonder if the audience appreciates who he truly is. He is the Man now that Lemmy has left the stage
Hope Matt Pike is doing good health wise
Truly a shame that metal is not televised. Great that a true rock band is recognized. The academy still has a LONG way to go by way of giving credit to real music...
HoF definitely deserves the recognition, but I feel like the selection committee just throws darts at a board. This time they got it right.
Intro is Tomahawk...yeah!
So random right? Hearing an orchestra play tomahawk... who woulda thought?
@@mola55e5 found out the orchestra leader had contributed to Patton's Mondo Cane tours.
@@lovesthedark Damn, that's a real fun fact!
God Hates a Coward sonny.
im happy for high on fire, good job
guys! congratulations!
God, and I just saw them a couple months back in a shitty pub in London... What a time to be alive.
That “thank you very much, peace.” Was the most High on Fire shit ever.
Even though the grammy awards are a sham and meaningless in the eyes of most true music fans, its still nice seeing a legit well deserving metal band win once in a while.
Yes!! By the way, MISSED YOU AT THE SPEED OF THE WIZARD TOUR!! Hope all is well. Come on over to Montana sometime soon! And FUCK the grammys! My ears are all I need!
Much repsect for high on fire. Never really heard their music i know they are instrumental on helping form mastodon in a sense and its cool to see them win a grammy after mastodon did since they're all cool friends. With that being said i was hoping trivium wouldve won. Next time brothas
Good job, boys!
Jethro Tull wasn’t nominated?
What a joke. I remember that, 1989. HAHAHHA
Come on, people.
Don't *sleep* on High on Fire.
Pun intended.
Everyone should’ve been standing for a legend
Kinda underwhelming considering the venue was 1/3 full. Very disrespectful to stick it on some kind of pre show bullshit. I bet they wouldn't have done that to Metallica. If actors can sit through a long Oscars ceremony, I'm sure music artists can do the same too. Great for HOF though, very underrated band in my opinion.
99 percent sure noone with the Grammies Org.has ever heard High on Fire in their life.
Yes! This is awesome
Congrats to Matt, Dez, & Jeff for the award. HOF is such a massively talented band. The trip Matt was talking about was the hike they had to make from the seats given to them in the balcony. Disrespectful. What? They couldn’t play a HOF track from the album as they walked up? Why should I be excited about a boring Tomahawk song like some people on here? None of those dudes were ever in Tomahawk. Absolutely lame. And disrespectful. At least the proper band got the award this time. Baby steps I suppose.
What's the name of the song?
I saw them live, face melting metal.
Sad to see best metal performance with most of the audience gone. Metal is all but dying from the popular scene. Back to the underground we go. Besides metal is much better anyway when the real Heshers stick around.
Congratulations to Pike and High on Fire. You came along way boys.
Metal forever and hail pike.
We love you guys !!!
Where is everybody it's so empty btw rock and metal is so underrated
The mainstream masses only care about the main show, which is nothing but rap and pop - they hate anything that isn't one or the other.
And don't get me started on the politically correct bullshit that they promote, as well.
This award is not aired on TV so a lot of people don't care since they won't show up in the audience on TV
These mainstream shows trigger me with their non alt-right bullshit. Grrr!!! My hero stable genius drumpf is so unfairly hated all because of these mean things called facts!! 😭 Globalists SJWs are the real problem!!
@@DEthe5150 copy paste much?

That was beautiful man.
The Grammy's are ridiculous, they have no respect towards bands in the Metal genre
Let the metal performers mix in with the fucking mainstream. Metal is a legitimate music genre, yet always get cast aside.
this was surreal experience.
Nobody gives a shit about the Grammys but still way too fucking cool to see Pike and the boys get the recognition they deserved for so long!! High on fire slays album after album
Look everyone. Real music.
Good to see Matt moving around. Stay healthy Pike.
I don't really give a fuck about the Grammys but it is sure nice to see these guys get recognition for a great album that I'm sure they worked their asses off to make
I’m just glad High on Fire won even if it’s not the best song. I was glad Megadeth won also. I’ve been following these bands 14+ years so I’m just happy some type of recognition was given
Why not on the main show
Because the main show is loaded with rap and pop garbage that the mainstream masses only care about.
And don't get me started on the politically correct bullshit that they promote, as well.
because it's fkn metal bro
DEthe5150 “waaa... they so PC! They don’t promote the agenda the current administration does!! Even if they don’t mention politics specifically, speaking out against hate is SJW PC! Now back to Fox News so I agree with their propaganda!”
Zero media support.
DEthe5150 some of the rap and pop on the grammies is good but the best of those genres is not in there. At least Janelle Monae’s performance was amazing, and the song she played wirtten by her with help from Prince and sounds like a homage to him (also St Vincent who is amazing)
Pike should have gotten one of these a long time ago
Awesome man!!!
they playing Tomahawk in the background 😱
How i feel when i get enough points from 711 for a free pizza. Just me, the cashier and the security cameras 🤘🏻
Start televising Metal.
Cannot wait to see them tomorrow night in Detroit
get well soon matt
Im a little surprised Matt was even willing to get on that stage
Plenty of good seats available.
For those who love classic rock and don't know about High On Fire, check out their cover version of "Vagabond of the western world" by thin Lizzy
Why in the hell was the mic stand so low? The guys had to bend down to talk. They should've brought it up like Lemmy's mic. Anyway, congrats again to High On Fire!
What gets me the most if that 90% of the audience doesn't clap after the announcement. I'm sorry, I was taught to clap for anyone getting recognized whether I like them or not. When you get mugged on the street or trip and fall in a puddle getting your designer shit ruined, I'm going to clap for you.
