  • We haven't been very active on social media, but production on SIREN is in full swing here at Loreseeker Games! We recently released this demo to our Patreon supporters, to get feedback on performance and controls. This demo level is a tiny portion of our game world and contains a handful of simple exploration objectives.
We are currently up to date with Unreal Engine 5.4, and are taking advantage of all of UE5's spicy features like Nanite landscapes and Lumen. With these next-gen features enabled, we are thrilled to be hitting 60 fps on average hardware WITH NO DLSS NEEDED, and breaking 90 fps Ultra settings @ 1440p with a higher-end GPU, after only a single optimization pass.
While our demo is still admittedly light on gameplay elements, we are hard at work on our combat system and a character rework. We'll have more updates soon!

It'd be incredibly cool if you did some procedural animation for the arms, have them grab on and pull you when near terrain and things. Maybe reach out and slide along things like dolphins or whales. It would really spice up the motion of the swimming , make it feel more alive.

Siren looks STUNNING and full of potential, not to mention passion and care. After Subnautica, we know the demographic for underwater exploration games is 1,000% there. Make it the best it can possibly be, y’all. ❤

Agree, it’s a really good time to be an indie dev these days because our competition the AAA industry is shooting themselves on the foot with bending the knee to investors who know nothing about games and taking bribes from DEI entities. I’m personally on a hiatus for my own project but seeing how bad the industry is doing and finding all these amazing indie projects, I’m very inspired to start developing again myself. Keep it up and make your own dream game instead of relying on an industry that has succumbed to corruption and politics. Most importantly support indie devs and smaller studios because they are gaming’s only hope.

The swimming animation is so fluid and natural-looking. So many animators neglect the motion of the human half and just do the tail end flapping when animating mermaids and the like. The whole body moves in a wave motion. Good work!

    • @loreseekergames
      @loreseekergames  Před 2 měsíci +86

And more work is being done! The animation will look a lot better in our next update.

    • @kazeya2360
      @kazeya2360 Před 2 měsíci +12

I find that wave motion for the body pretty unnatural. First of all, the human body is not flexible enough to keep that up, especially if you consider the shape of the human spine. This can be seen in divers, who also don't move like that even if they wear fins.
Second, since she has a human head, thats also where her eyes are. If her point of view is constantly moving, she would probably get dizzy from the shifting view as well as neck strain.
I think the most realistic option would be:
      - keep that wave motion for quickly accelerating from standstill only
      - once we have a certain speed (below normal speed but beyond the initial stages of the acceleration) fix the head in position to reduce the shaky view she would have and tone down the human body movement a bit. This also expresses that we aren’t accelerating as much.
      - once we reach our speed goal, almost completely stop the movement of the human body and only keep the tail moving
      - if we accelerate again (while already moving) we can increase the movement of the human body again, but the head should be kept as still as possible to combat disorientation from a shaky view
Then again, that's only if mermaid upper bodies have the same anatomy as real human bodies. If their spines are not in the back but the middle of torso and neck, with the same amount of muscles above and below the bone, no spinal curvature and their eyesight is deteriorated due to them using echolocation and their inner ear is less susceptible to motion sickness, that whole body wave motion might be more realistic.
Edit: the animation itself does look good though!

@@kazeya2360 I totally agree. The faster you go the more minimal the movements should be, because the high resistance of water. Take a look at fish like tunas that are one of the fastest swimmers. When they just zoom past barely moving. Dolphins and whales the same. That much amount of movement would just drastically rise the amount of water resistance on the body.
      - I'd say this movement, yet slower to give a better immersion of being in water not air, can be used for slow swimming, while when dashing a few harsh slaps with the tail fin for accceleration and then gliding through the water.

    • @petloverspy
      @petloverspy Před 2 měsíci +9

@@kazeya2360I mean I mermaid in real life, as in I have the useable costume for it and everything, and this isn’t at all an unnatural motion for the human body in that scenario. Divers (I also dive) who wear fins wear split ones, not monofins. It’s absolutely correct that this isn’t the best movement for seeing, but it is for speed and power with a tail on especially if you don’t want to strain your ankles. I’m highly susceptible to motion sickness but it doesn’t bother me at all, and I can still see well enough while doing this. Of course mermaid anatomy isn’t real so devs can do what they want with it, but this type of mermaid seems more in the “mermaids with a human spine” direction so as someone who swims like this myself I think this is the best way to make it look natural.

From what I've seen of their other trailer and website that is exactly what this game will be... It's a dark fantasy rpg with the story being based on an ancient lovecraftian type monster, the deeper you go the darker both the water and story gets... So it's kinda like a rpg mermaid version of subnautica in that way... The shallows are chill but the further down you go the creepier it gets... Looks pretty cool lol...

The animations are beautiful. The biggest thing I noticed for improving them is going sideways. At present, there's no animation for strafing side-to-side, so the mermaid rather jarringly just zooms in that direction. I'm not sure that there's a good-looking way to animate that, though; so they might need to settle for a system where your avatar physically turns in the direction that they're going.

So~ why not just add the fun ability to collect bioluminescent algae in some spots as you travel through darkened areas AND you can start with a little bobble tied around your waist to keep the algae! be it a net bag around a barnacle speckled bottle or other container, the mobile light source would be neat!

One thing that simply keeps reapearing in my head is the acceleration in directions different than the direction of travel. Water offers way more reistance than air, so I would expect the player character to put more efforst in changing direction. Right now, the motion looks a bit stiff. I would expect more bending/flexing from the character, like fish (please don't start writing a muscle simulation, would be nice, but you gyus are not hollywood). Otherwise fantastic to watch!

hmm... I think GI uses something of that sort: it has some small "rotational radius" as a simple implementation of water resistance idea - obviously it shouldn't be as big for mermaid(which supposed to be more flexible) but some minimal "bending" for real would've been nice to see.
Also I'm not sure if PoV is free or "glued" - it'd be nice to do, like - backflips or other special moves while being able to keep non-forced camera(maybe it shouldn't be completely 360*-free, but at least some degree of freedom will be nice as well)

(now actual comment XD): I stopped whatever I was doing when I saw browser notification for this. Graphics looks great - lighting changing on dusk feels very realistic. Level design looks nice too, but giving this is just tech demo I really hope there'll be more complex layouts in the game!
Keeping deep (as) dark for realism is understandable, but if there are deeper exploration intended I hope there'll be some occasional light sources as well('catch-fish'? Luminescent plankton?...)
I'm not sure if that'll be lore-compatible but I also hope that there'll be at least somewhat character customization(even if it's just decorations). I hope it'll support mods too :]
P.S. I also have high hopes that this game will "fire up" and more other companies will look into this direction... I get that it's not an easy task to make underwater world that'll be 'both' realistic/interesting to explore/intricate while also having some good story to incorporate - but it's not like it's impossible. Also setting can be whatever: more 'realistic', more magical, or both combined. To make things even crazier - there's always a way to add mermaid-human transformation and add some overground as well if such is crucially needed XD And game doesn't even need to be that big "AAA"! I'd took even some smaller one - but there are none(
P.P.S. I can't even use ue5 for now, ahah, otherwise I'd been your sub on patreon long ago XD But I really hope that by the time of release situation will get better and I'll be able to fully taste such a [somehow] unique world you are making.

Just some feedback as I’m very hopeful about this game!
-A sprint[surge] in this case when swimming to go faster[maybe we’re caught in a chase? Or want to get to an area quicker] and this creates a cool motion with the water behind our tail!
-Add more tail designs like different fin shapes/lengths/scale pattern etc.
There are loads of different aesthetics for sirens
-For graphics, more clarity and HDR toning would create a perfect underwater atmosphere.
Add fogginess and bloom/glow to the character so they stand out
Perhaps a faint green/blue filter for the game
-The textures in the character menu could definitely be sharper and a little more realistic [especially the skin details]
Though I do understand this is a small development team so it’s not a huge issue.
-Add underwater landscapes like Atlantis and lost cities to explore.
That would definitely spice up the exploration! Instead of just endless coral reefs
-Animations for climbing onto rocks from the shore when in mermaid form/or just peering over [ik that’s very Disney mermaid] xD
But adding more fluid animations when it comes to moving around and changing form/interacting with the world around us - it’ll help to make it even better!
-I prefer the Day/Night cycle occurring naturally rather than a switch off/on option but then again that’s just a preference
P.S The music is just perfect I have to mention, the ambiance for this game is exactly what I would hope for, I’d love to hear more tracks like it in the future.
Can’t wait to see how this game turns out, best of luck! xox

Thank you very much for posting some new footage of this. It looks absolutely amazing - and given the lack of any other mermaid games of this quality, could go down in history as setting a standard for the genre.

@loreseekergames What about adding a danger level when humans are nearby during Siren form in the water? Max danger for ex. might be being spotted and the risk of capture is increased. Pirates/Sailors giving chase seems fun! Evasion might be like swimming deeper down or leaving the danger zone (radius). Hard difficulty probably might include literal sailors jumping into the water if the ship is super close to you or nets being shot out of a cannon when at a certain distance. Windy or stormy days make the ships travel faster distances and make humans more of a threat.

Beautiful preview, thanks.

Is it possible to have more range in the swimming animation? Instead of just the normal wavy up and down, could we also have spins, twirls, maybe flips when the player turns around, more variety of movement with the arms. The graphics look great, lighting and world design variation is remarkable.
I would also love to see more tail or species type variations for the sirens as well (based on the teasers and this tech demo).
I look forward to seeing the final result! Please don't feel rushed to get this game out, put lots of artful details in it for us to find! ❤

I've always wanted a mermaid video game, so thank you for bringing this to light!! It appears that, at least with this test level, you are striving for a realistic ocean approach, but personally I think this game would greatly benefit from dipping further into whimsy :) Colorful, alien environments like Vashj'ir from World of Warcraft, the world of the Na'vi from Avatar or conceptual designs from Valerian(if one good thing can be said about that movie, it's that its environments are gorgeous!!)! Even encountering other types of alien mer-like people that don't have tailfins/have other aquatic designs (like Shape of Water etc lol) would be really interesting to see!!

This looks really cool, I'd probably put hours into this. But I can think of two things that would make it even better:
    1. It would be great if the character could interact with her environment. Touch the whale, pick up and collect stuff around the seafloor. That would make it more immersive!
    2. I love all the schools of fish, but there are so many kinds of swarms besides the rather tightly knit ones we see. Different species of fish form different kinds of swarms. E.g. Chromis chromis forms big, but very loose swarms to feed and their swarms swim rather slow, if they move at all. In contrast, sardines form these big, impressive and tight-knit swarms in the open water. It would be amazing if there'd be a variety of different fish, snails, turtles and all kinds of sea critter 😊
