- Why does Karl Ruprecht Kroenen need a clockwork mechanism in his chest? What can his movements tell us? What is this strange way to express emotions? What exactly has he done to his body, and why, after all? I’ll answer these questions about our old buddy Kroenen and more in this video. Yes, this is a real body horror.
Hellboy is a 2004 American superhero film based on the Dark Horse Comics character of the same name, created by Mike Mignola. Directed and written by Guillermo del Toro. Don’t forget to subscribe to the channel and give this video a “thumbs up”! Enjoy!

The mechanism looks like it has some kind of magical runes that rotate in his sand-blood, maybe he does not need it to "live" but it can grant him more powers?
i always thought that clockwork mechanism if turned with correct rotation would speed up his movements and agility
He is a Jason wannabe. Jason Voorhees would outlast him.
@@iferutoznola5565 more like a Krüger wannabe mechanical hand, similar surname.
The human heart is a metronome. He winds it so that he can increase the tempo of his playing/perfomance. It exists at all for the comfort value of a beat/ticktock.
He understood the “weakness of his flesh” only the machine is immortal
He then craved the strength and certainty of steel
after that he aspired to the purity of the blessed machine
Are you saying he was the first of the AdMech?
Even in death, he serves the Omnissiah.
Blasphemous wretch - ALL HAIL THE EMPEROR!
'He removed some of his ribs'
Uh oh 💀
Except he probably would have removed "that" too.
I'm stupid. Can you explain?
@@Diedwhilemakingwafflestheres a rumor that Marylin Manson removed some of his ribs to be more bendy in order to blow himself, I guess thats the point of the inuendo
@@rus0004considering he’s an undead puppet more than likely 😵💫 he is full of sand
From what I recall, he also removed the parts that would make such flexibility worthwhile.
This dude was always one of the few characters that scared me as a child. He has such a cool design, and I love the fight with Hellboy. When Hellboy beats him down and crushed him, that was my favorite part in the movie.
Yeah he was a pretty cool character.
Ya something about a zombie assassin didn’t sit right with me either
It always fucked me up that Hellboys final move didn't actually kill him, just trapped him forever.
Legit reminds me of Voldo from Soul Calibur
Did you also get scared of hearing clockwork ticking?
One of the coolest villain designs ever. Love that hes basically just a golem assassin and the clockwork mechanisms and masks are just purely for theatrics and to look cool. 😂
being a Golem is very ironic for a Nazi XD
@@Chimera262 the movie is jewish so obviously everything is inverted.
I always figured that since Kroenen's love for music is so apparent in the movie that music helps him concentrate and that wind up mechanism is basically letting him hear a heartbeat inside him.. Or more accurately, a metronome so he can tune his concentration.
In The Comics, before he became mute in a lab accident Kroenen was said to have "the most beautiful singing voice in the Hitlerjugend."
Still looks and moves exceptionally well for 120 years old.
German engineering at its finest 😂

Kroenen: "From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me. I craved the strength and certainty of steel"
One of the most terrifying villains in movie history
Ok but his hugo boss style outfit is pretty lit ngl.
Speak English boy.
hugo boss didnt design it, they made it only
They didn't even make it, it was just made in the same factories that Hugo boss used
His designs still sick tho
Stop spreading this stupid myth, hugo boss didn't design any clothes for the SS. His company was simply one of the many companies who manufactured the uniforms.
As a diehard fan of Mignola's work, literally any of it, and of the Hellboy comic saga, I had a lot to say about Del Toro's adaptation, i like the movie, I like it a lot even, but there's also a lot in it that clashes with Hellboy's original phylosophy that could have been avoided. I understand he wanted to present the movie to a wide audience, but I believe he should have been more daring in respect of the source material, producing an R rated film. I'm sure it would have been amazing.
Anyhow, what Del Toro did to Kronen is actually pretty good, he turned a secondary character with not much weight, into a scary, heavy weight baddie that is actually unforgettable. Not all changes are bad ☠️
Well I mean the comics are pretty s*** some of the worst I've ever read, the movie was a great Improvement
well we SAW what happens if helboy becomes R-Rated. it becomes a mess. imagine making a lovable and funny devil looking guy into an UGLY unfunny and edgy man-child and putting him in a horribly inconsistent, goofy and ugly setting where suddenly 'captain mericuh! and friends(TM)' suddenly step in and completely ruin the 1946 scene.
maybe Del Toro could have made an even shinier golden apple with the R Rating. but he proved that you dont need it to make a great film with a devil-looking dude. even blood shedding has value. too much and its suddenly as thrilling as water. my point is Del made a great balance of almost everything while Marshal had NO idea what he was doing.
@@tils987 Marshal's hands were tied by the studio. That was their picture, not his.
@@tils987 nah, that wasn't from the movie becoming R rated, that was from directors who didn't want to let hellboy be an adult. It's not related to rating or anything like that, purely the fact it was a bad movie with shit characters
Pfft dude I read del toro as del taco and was so confused for a second
“From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh…”
Kroenen is something you would see as a boss in COD zombies
If I had a dollar for every time one of Hellboy’s enemies gave him insight of his destiny to bring on the apocalypse I’d be able to buy a vast supply of Babyruth’s 😂
Finally!!! this underrated villain earned a good analysis.
“What exactly has he done to his booty?” 🧐
Was just about to comment that xD
I never read the comics, I only saw the movies. Thanks for providing this excellent context.
He’d be the winner of every blink contest.
Hats off! 😂
Definitely one of the most badass henchmen in film history
One of the most heavy metal villans out there.
Kroenen vs. Nuada, now THAT would be a fight !!
Yup
kronen would shit on him
It’s been 20 years, I wonder if he is still in that spike pit that hellboy threw him into 😂
Probably. May have turned himself off after losing any will to live tho
unlikely, in Hellboy 2 you can see his battered mask in one of the display case inside BPRD
Since he has to constantly wind himself up, he probably died soon after as he was probably unable to rewind himself.
@@enriquecabrera2137he doesn't need to wind up shit lol. it was pure theatrical.
@@whitygoose without his theatrics, he's nothing. Without purpose one does not live.
Titanicpissflapexcellerator.
You're definitely cultured, I never would’ve figured that out
Considering WW2 was more magic focused in the comics, this makes sense even when Hitler denied the superstitions and placed more hate-blame of the Jews and Russians.
... yeah he def seems like a more developed variation of a golem.... a Jewish, earth-based, alchemical creation that's governed by the sacred scroll placed in his mouth, also written in Hebrew. The sand in his body is highly similar to the cursed Babylonian sorcerer, Kan-Ra from Killer Instinct 2013 👍.
What is the name of the Book ?

I always assume the need to wind himself up is because since becoming an undead, there are limits to his natural base movements, like he isn't burden by life but burdened by undeath of sort, like yea he is resilient to everything and everything but with a great cost, so the wind up is needed to give him additional movement.
Edit: Ok I made this comment when I was surrounded by distractions, what I mean by undeath simply like, yea he can still move, he can walk in all, he wont feel pain, or have the limits of pain but he can't move very fast, he isn't as agile or very acrobatic.
I remember in the game bloodline:masquerade that in the lore, Vampires could live indefinitely without blood but needed it to power theor abilities and basic movements.
I like your concept of him being an enhanced undead, not just a clockwork zombie. It would mean he's still alive in that pit even after his clockwork stops. Given how his boss knows so much about demonic magic it's not outside the realm of possibilities that his state of undeath is caused my magic and he made his own improvements.
Next time I see the scene where he rises from table I'll be checking if his gears are still whirring or if he is indeed moving without their help.
That is exactly how I think of it too. Wind up for additional power and speed.
@@workinprogress5431 it would make for such a cool dnd monster
@@matthewallen2273 I know its a month late, but yea, when I was younger, I always thought that in this universe, there are still limits, like if I choose to be a necromancer, yes my undead minions can't be killed through easy and/or conventional means, but if I eat dirt, that is it, the entire army falls.
And in this case, sure he is undead but I can easily run away from him in a sack race and I assume the clock works and gears are meant for enhancing him or compensation.
Dude is a former krieg soldier that believed in the omnissaia and went to the Adeptus Mechanicus because the flesh is weak...at least in my 40k related head canon
One problem is that earlier in the video you said he cranks his heart key to increase his motor functions, but then later on say it is for nothing but aesthetics.
yes, as a result
We fell for his deception and ignored some of the leading logical conclusions shown later. Most failed to consider when it was revealed that dark magic revived him that what we saw before might be totally nonfunctional. Partly because it was cool and we want it to work like it was shown. His play acting was effective.
He's putting himself in the zone, he's just crazy amd eccentric
Definitely a better live action version than his comic counterpart that’s just a mad scientist
He always reminded me of Voldo from soul caliber
I was just about to comment this!
Voldo, not Volvo…🤣😂 But yes, I agree.
@@pclord20xx tbh I thought I put Voldo, I think spellcheck hates soul caliber. Thanks btw

Wdym u thot it was Rael?
that uniform is freakin good
Always an interesting character, & a badass design & fashion sense 😂
He always reminded me of Voldo from the Soul Calibur games. Ya know, if he wore proper clothes, and joined the Nazi Party...
Lmfao proper clothes. No assless chaps heard

I feel like this is what spurred my love of steampunk, honestly.
Weirdest but dedicated soldier
Karl ruprecht kroenen has be one off the most badass antagonist we've seen in 21 century motion pictures the introduction to his character at the beginning was perfect standing in the rain with that outfit we can't see his facial expressions so he uses theatrical movements to express his emotions making him uniquely identifiable as the freak in the gas mask 🎭
He’s one of my fav villains thank you so much for this video it was awesome!
This guy must have been the inspiration for Samurai Sword from Chainsaw Man. Fujimoto often said that he takes much inspiration from Movies so it would defenitly make sense that he took some from here too.
Kroenen was a more interesting character than the main cast 😂
I would love to see this character tangle with Deadpool.
That would be breathtaking!
This character fascinated me when i first saw the movie.
@4:30 when you don't have eyelids, you tend to always look surprised.
Pfft I was literally thinking the same lmao
Ah, my favorite character in all of Hellboy ever since I was 5. Truly a magnificent character.
I really wish that they would have made a world war 2 episode of this series. But then that would be original and we can't have that. 😅😂
I love your analytical perception of these villians
He is the coolest looking villain. Smooth, stylish nazi uniform, mask and skill! 👍🏻
it's kind of scary to think that he might still be alive in that spike pit
Dang dude! What a callback i haven't thought about hellboy movies in a minute! Ive always wondered about this guy!
"What exactly has he does to his booty"
Lmaoaoa I thought I was the only one who heard that 🤣🤣
alright now give us the surgery guide, I've got some self improvement to do
Kroenen had awesome clothes in the beginning of the Movie
Excellent job my friend.
Kroenen is the most evil vibes that gives off hut duel hand swords with that black gun goes hard with an edit
This man was a living cadaver.
I never put a lot of thought into it but I guess I imagined that the clockwork throughout his body and armor were magically endowed with power. Maybe he needs those masks from time to time to keep his eyeballs moist.
My headcanon is that Pandora actor from Overlord definitely got inspired by this guy.
I dont think so the only thing connecting them is the uniform. And i believe the uniform is from the 1e war. Their personalities and traits are completely seperate.
He was a human automaton i believe which later wasn't any human left inside it! Reminds really good voldo from soul calibur franchise! 😅
I always thought that Kronen winds up his heart mechanism to vibrate the sand in his body to get it flowing like water, so that he can move around freely. But why would a corpse filled with sand need to be vibrated to move you might be wondering?
Well that's a good question, the answer is simple: if he's been undead for so long, doesn't that mean his bones muscles and internal organs are all too weak for him to use? Other then the black magic that's clearly keeping him alive, I'd say his body being filled with sand is extremely helpful, and plays a major role in helping him move his body, because without it, he'd just be a spaghetti noodle.
So basically, what I'm trying to say is, it's both theatrical and functional.
I like to believe the body in the movies is like an hourglass since he is filled with sand. Plus he has a workshop with multiple masks which means he has multiple suits and multiple bases. When one suit empties with sand another’s activated.
I was a kid when I thought this so don’t go too hard on me with plot holes in my theory
A most strange, bizarre and unnatural perversion of the human body….
I read the title as “What Korean did to his body” 😅😅
He has to have artificial diarrhoea because he can't produce his own anymore.
"silicon aliens don't exist, because silicone degrade in sand"
uh uh ? and ?
My thoughts on the matter: He understands the need for other human beings to make sense of the insensible. He knows that when someone confronts him without prior knowledge of his methods and nature, they expect a human being inside some sort of steampunk gimp suit. All the theatrics of his present form--the ticking, the moving gears, the sand, the mask, etc.--are his way of deliberately using the person's fear of the unknown and of the uncanny valley to unsettle, disturb, or distract them. Yes, his visuals may be directly influenced by an internal psychological motivation, but it has the practical effect of psychological warfare, which works greatly to his advantage.
That was a great recomendation, Ive loved it
Thanks for that....
For real...
What did he do to his body?
EVERYTHING.
Not what do he done to his booty UU😂
He simply understood the weakness of his mortal flrsh and replaced it with stronger mechanical ones as the maxhine g9d intended.
He upgrade himself, make him become invulnerable, the power of evolutionary
I feel like he would be incredibly easy to tease
Would've been smart to have the weird ancient supernatural cyborg who died mysteriously and for no reason restrained while studying him
Wow, never thought he was really so thought out, i always just thought he was cool
“As soon as I realized the weakness of my flesh, I was disgusted by it”
"Lady fingers...they taste just like lady fingers..."
I wonder if he removed his heart while alive and the winding is a habit from when he used to have to wind it up, back when he still had blood to pump, as a way to manually give himself an adrenaline-like state.
even as an adult this guy still scares me which says a lot cause not much scares me 😭
It is 4 am on a Tuesday why did I click on this I don’t know anymore
Came here for the pronunciation of "body". Stayed for the content
i love his appeareance at the start of the film. very nice uniform, long black leather coat and the cool mask. just beautiful. as expected from our uniforms :)
Oh, that's Kordhell....
"The main killer of the Third Reich" is a pretty bold title considering the roster of individuals involved
There was a villain in super robot monkey team hyperforce go called tick tock, he would casually mention how he got carried away replacing all his limbs and organs with mechanical upgrades, chuckling as if he mightve enjoyed it, I wonder if Ticktock was a reference to Kroenen, prolly not lol but it would be cool
Or he did a lot of those movements with the glove or walking down the stairs BECAUSE THE GUY CAN'T SEE RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM. I have that mask you have to angle your head or move things into your field view or you will have a huge blind spot right between the eyes.
Praise be to the Omnissiah I'm glad to see my fellow Warhammer 40k enthusiasts took the time to visit the comments section.
He always made me think of that creepy fugger from soul caliber. voldo?
Yeah I think Voldo was a design inspiration for Kroner
Voldo from soulcalibur always reminds me of Kroenen
Okay but he wasn't surprised. It is just that without eyelids he LOOKS surprised. I would say he is cocking his head kind of like a bird. So he is waiting and then hears them breaking in and cocks his head hearing it.

He reminds me of Dr Steinman from the Bioshock 1 game. Dr Steinman was a cosmetic surgeon who went insane. The good Doctor leaves some tape recorded messages around. One in particular still makes me laugh when the Doctor goes on a diatribe about Picasso's cubist period. Something the Dr attempted to replicate on his patients.
I think he looks surprised mostly because he doesn't have eye lids lol
