    I love how everything is “broken” in this intro, broken shard of space falling to earth, falling through broken borg cubes, broken planets, and finally coming to put a broken Picard back together. And only after Picard is made whole again by space, then you hear the old NG theme. Awesome storytelling in just a couple minutes.

      @@bdz_4206 I just rewatched that scene after reading your pos. A very powerful scene that stayed true to Picard’s character. I absolutely love the call back to Marta Batanides. The musical score that plays to evoke emotion in this scene as you see in a lot of tv is much needed in this era of Trek storytelling. I hope we see more one on one Picard Rios scenes. Jeff Russo did such an amazing job for this theme, and using the flutes to allude back to "The Inner Light", the behind the scenes clip of Russo talking about the choices he made for how to use each of the instruments to convey what he wanted people to feel and be reminded of, just so much effort and work put into this! Amazing!

    Okay..I listened more attentivly...and guess what I found out? The theme is related to the TNG theme in a closer way then just a few notes of it playing at the end. What actually happens from a compositional point of view is that the theme is basically constructed around slow variations (some notes added, substracted, keys changed etc) of one the TNG themes secondary musical motifs. Listen closely to the motif playing here Star Trek: The Next Generation theme (HQ) 1:18 to about 1:21 or 1:22 and the to the ST: Picard Theme. Do you hear how its basically almost the TNG motif beeing played, toyed with, varied in different ways?

This music reflects that. I for one am grateful for a Star Trek that acknowledges the sea change away from the sometimes naive optimism of the past and toward the reality of a world that can be and is still sometimes troubled in spite of all the impressive advancements in science and technology (or even because of it), where we have to grapple with the realization that we ourselves may not necessarily be the selfless champions of freedom and equality that we like to believe.

It just tells us lots about the man Picard is, a honourable man who left the once-idealistic Starfleet behind for betraying its core values, the spirit that made him join in the first place. He may be older and more cynical, but that noble flame 🔥 that made us appreciate the man is far from dying down. In fact, it just makes the character of Jean-Luc Picard more pronounced.

    The figure played by the piccolo at the beginning of the piece (and used a few times in the episode itself) reminds me of similar figures that Goldsmith used in the TNG films. (You can hear it quite well at the beginning of Nemesis, just as the "Paramount Pictures presents" title is about to fade in. I'm hoping that's on purpose.

  • @scottmadej
    @scottmadej Před 4 lety +2

    There are a lot of complaints about the Discovery and Picard opening themes. The opening TOS had bongos that reflected the era. The 80s and 90s saw a lot of tv shows having big orchestra themes, not just trek. But these days, those play a little dated. This is more on par with Westworld or True Detective, or The Expanse. it’s modern. And honestly, I’d rather them save classic cues for big moments in the show itself. If you watched the clip from starfleet HQ from next weeks episode, they play TNG themes front and center while he walks in the building and sees the Galaxy Class hologram/model.
