  • Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #422
    Date of Adventure: 3/27/20
I sneak away from quarantine to camp out for a few days in totally deserted Death Valley (which, I should note, was still open at the time of filming -- so I wasn't breaking any laws or anything). In this video I poke around the Panamint Valley, then investigate the secrets of the weirdly named settlement of Stovepipe Wells.

From "Find A Grave: "Val Nolan was a miner who was last seen in Beatty, Nevada shortly before he died. He died in the intense summer heat of Death Valley and was found by a movie crew three months later, who buried him where they found him. His grave is off the dirt road going to the sand dunes near Stovepipe Wells."

About 1972 or 73, my sister was jacking the handle furiously to see if water would come out, and broke the rod where it attached to the handle. I have sort of felt ashamed that it was my family responsible for that, to this very day. :(

I was working in Death Valley years ago over the winter, and that Spring was the best wild flower season in 100 years.
Huge patches of purple, yellow, orange and red. It was incredible.
My dad once landed in Stove Pipe Wells in his Cessna. He went to sign in and the pen had melted.

I remember driving down the Columbia gorge one time, and we coasted into Biggs, running on fumes. all the gas stations had cones across the lanes. I asked the attendant what was going on, and he said the dam was shutting down power to the whole county so they could do some repairs to the dam. The Dalles was another 20 miles, and we barely made it!!

In the mid sixties, I used to drive my CJ5 jeep to Stove Pipe Wells and stay in the campground behind the General Store every New Years. The campground was free and had showers for 50 cents. The General store was very small then and there was an air strip right behind it with a dirt/gravel runway. I think gas was 45 or 50 cents a gallon then. I always had lots of fun exploring all over Death Valley. I always love your videos!

My kids are members of a local Boy Scout troop, and have some fun photos at those vehicles. There's some neat dunes and an abandoned mine a little further North from your camp at the beginning of the video. As a funny aside, there used to be a "No Fishing" sign stuck out in the dry lake near where you turned onto Rt190. When I first moved here in the 90's, the only cell signal in DV was on top of Telescope Peak, from Ridgecrest, lol.

That's an old fashioned cast iron hand pump that pumps water from a well. My grandmother had one on her farm & it worked up until the 90s & beyond. The pump on your video is only half a pump. The top hand lever of the pump was removed when whomever covered up the well. Nowadays there is a modern version of the same pump only made out of steel. I believe that the older pumps were more durable.

Yup, good call. The 4 port is a mid 50s Buick. One comment was how the police ran in Buick’s back then. They could cruise 100mph ‘as long as they had gas’. I had a late 50s Pontiac and you could watch the gas gage drop.

I like exploring Nevada too and I was going to say with the virus and everything it was a really interesting time to explore Death Valley. Death Valley is surreal on any day but with no one there it was other worldly. Eventually saw another driver and we were both mutually surprised at seeing another driver we actually pulled over and had a conversation about how unusual it was to not see another person for so long. Lol good times. Love this place.

The first car looks like a Plymouth from the late '40s. We had a '49 Plymouth. The second car is definitely a Buick from the about '57. One of my frat brothers had one. The 4 port-holes in the front fenders were faux exhaust pipes. Many hot-rods had real exhaust pipes coming out like that in front, often with no front fenders. The Buick was not a hot-rod.

Not enough left of the first one for me to hazard a guess, but the second one is a 55...maybe 56 Buick. can't tell what model. When you actually get to the "well", that black pipe
lookin' thing was once a hand pump...but the handle and rod are gone now. Thanks for another great video, Love. Yer Awesome!(8-).

The one with the 4 large holed (not from bullets) front fender is a big engined (332 ci) Buick from the early 50's. The small engined (264 ci) models had 3 holes. That was a hotrod 4 door lol
I'm clueless about the other car hulk. Thanks for sharing with us bored folks !

The thing at the well looks like part of a hand water pump.
Leaving coins on a isolated grave....the story I heard was that was so the soul of the person could pay the ferryman to take them across the river Styx.
Cool video! I've never been out west , but it is a bucket list thing for me...

The story of the Death Valley 49ers is interesting, a lot like the Donner Party minus the cannibalism and death. Someone should do a video about them! (Hint hint)

Sarah, I'm surprised that you do not have a couple of 5 gallon Gas Cans secured to the rear door on you 4x4.
It's good to see you traveling ;) Be safe, stay healthy.

The four-door sedan without a roof is a 1954 or 55 Buick. The fastback I am not sure of, this one had a roof still on it, I think it is a 40`s vehicle. Thanks Sarah for stopping to let us car guy`s have a look.
