Good job, guys, although there's nothing really surprising. The one thing I'd like to comment on is interior volume. It's true, the Forester comes out slightly more than the Outback in that department. That always surprised me a little as I would have thought the Outback would have had the edge but I've looked at both these cars for quite a while now and the difference is in configuration. The Forester is a little taller while the Outback is a little longer from the back of the front seats to the tailgate. The measurements give the Forester the edge in total volume but I've done some measuring and the Outback actually has more floor space than the Forester and that, for me, gives it the nod. Most folks rarely use the space in the cargo area that's above the window line. So in my opinion, the Outback has more "usable" space.
I have a 2019 Forester Sport. When I looked at the 2020 Outback Onyx XT (because of the available turbo option), I found I really didn't like the lower roof in the cargo area. I prefer being able to crouch almost upright (OK, I AM pretty short) in the back, particularly if I'm considering camping in the back. I've heard others (taller than I am) who are looking at the two for the same use and who prefer the length of the Outback to the height of the Forester. So this one is basically a matter of personal preference.
@@mpetrides - understood! I'm 6'2" so obviously "length" is going to mean something to me. ;-) I've also got other interests and hobbies for which the added length behind the front seats would be a big advantage. I'm currently driving a Toyota Rav4 which is very similar to the Forester in configuration. It has worked well for me though the years but it has been a little cramped from time to time.
NICE JOB with this video ! I just went through this comparison personally between the FORESTER TOURING and OUTBACK TOURING. There were 4 deciding factors for me. 1. PANORAMIC MOONROOF on the FORESTER is a wonderful feature vs the small sunroof in the OUTBACK. 2. After 2 different test drives, I still found the large touch screen in the OUTBACK to be awkward to operate while driving. There were layers of screens to go through for simple tasks. You touch the screen and sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't... Talk about a distraction.... I'll take old fashion knobs and switches any day. 3. FORESTER is just shy of 9 inches shorter than the OUTBACK and yet, more cargo space and just about equal front and rear leg room. That combined with the tight turning radius, FORESTER was the clear winner. 4. PRICE: Both TOURING models, with the same options, the OUTBACK is almost $3,000 MORE. For me personally.. .the FORESTER is the better deal. My 2020 Forester is currently on order. (JASPER GREEN with BROWN LEATHER INTERIOR) Can't wait for it to arrive.
Pretty good review . I just bought a 2020 Forester sport with option pkg 24 . Which has the signals for traffic coming up etc.. power rear gate . But the biggest reason i went with Forester is something i didnt hear you mention . The double XX mode is a HUGE game changer . There are other reviews on youtube that show just what that is all about especially if you drive in snow . Where other vehicles got stuck or put on chains the forester was able to make it . That my friends is a over the top deal breaker worth many points.
If you had given the Forester the more comparably priced add-on package, the vehicles would be about the same price. The Forester would then also have a power tailgate and blind spot monitor like the Outback, and an upgraded 8" touchscreen infotainment system with a 576W Harman Kardon speaker system. Also, you need to include the Forester's X-mode feature, which makes it more off-road capable. To me, the Forester is the much better value. I also would have given the Forester the half- point for the climate controls. Not everything needs to be included in one big touchscreen, it's easier to change climate controls on the fly when there's physical buttons and knobs.
Forested gets more bang for the buck. Panoramic roof is very nice. More room in the Forester. Only thing I like better wuth the outback, is longer wheelbase, which gives,a better ride. Forester Premium with 15 package is the best way to go.
Good video, test driving both vehicles I chose Forester for it's comparable interior space and shorter exterior length. Around 14" shorter makes Forester easier to park between cars on the road side in urban areas.
Outback is an off road capable small station wagon. It is better for city people and driving for folks that might find themselves driving dirt roads or camp roads on ocassion. Forester is a small off road SUV that you can drive in town. The more and harder you drive off road the more appealing and functional the Forester is. The more you drive in town and on pavement the more appealing the Outback will be. I would say looks and where the vehicle will be driven most often are the two choice factors.
I've had both, and I agree. What isn't mentioned in this review is that the Forester is a bit more capable off road. Better approach angles despite the same overall height. To be fair, I think the Outback is a slightly better highway cruiser. You can tell the difference on a windy day.
Just got a chance to drive both. I’m leaning towards the outback, but not by much and will probably have a better look at the forester before deciding if it comes down to those two. Biggest “knock” on the outback was that infotainment system. Sure, it’s “cool” and you kind of feel like you’re piloting the USS Enterprise, but so much is accessed through that one system (so I assume you can never put in an aftermarket system without losing a lot of functionality). Plus, some things like controlling heated seats and safety features would easier with a few buttons.
Passed by the local Subi dealer.. I couldn’t decide between the two lol, liked them both. Very much wished the Forester had the Outback XT engine though
I have the 2019 Forester Sport. It's my first Subaru and I love it. Just wish it had more towing capacity. Sure, the Outback has more towing capacity, but the wagon look was just not my style. The Forester is such a great vehicle and I love my large moon roof.
Agreed, we have two Foresters and an Outback, but if towing was a priority, why didn't you go with the Outback? I think my 2018 Outback is much more handsome than our 2018 Forester, and the interior is hands down better. A matter of taste, if course.
We have both , a 2018 Forester we bought new. And a 2015 Outback we recently bought as a 2nd car used. I am petite and short , When driving he Forester seems to feel like I am sitting up higher in the seat. I like the size of the Forested better as far as the seats fit my body better and sit me height wise to the steering wheel better. I like the forester size better around town it feels less big to me. the outback feels too big for my body size and just feels bigger driving in lanes , my body feels too small and short for the sests. For someone taller and someone larger, the outback is a lot nicer for space when sitting in the seat it feels roomier. the outback seems to ride smoother like a luxury car. We just got the outback and I hit my head really bad on the door frame getting in because I'm used to getting in the forester. I really like driving the forester much better. But for a family car for long vacation and trips the outback would be my preference for how it rides and how much more w width of feels when sitting in the seats. Definitely the outback is a great family car. And would be awesome for family travel. the Forested looses some arm room, space while sitting in the seat. overall I love the forester better especially if I'm driving. I love the outback for smooth luxury ride, more roomy width wise in the seat, a little longer for cargo in the back. A taller person who likes larger cars would probably prefer the outback. the dealer at Subaru explained that the fort has a little more height in the ceiling, he said not much difference in size between the two, except outback is a little longer. He said the difference I notice sitting in the seats between the two is all in how the manufacturer has angled the seat down into the vehicle. Hope that helps anyone considering. I've never thought I would love a car. But I love my forester! and I am a loyal Subaru lover now tool
This is a fantastic video-your knowledge and easy narration make your videos a pleasure to watch-I’ve been going through many of them. I appreciated that you considered so many aspects of the comparison, and didn’t default to the highest trim models. Thank you!
You should consider the Outback is much more comfortable for us larger adult drivers. My leg rubbed uncomfortably on the console in the Forester while there is plenty of room in the Outback. Just one more plus for the Outback.
I test drove both and went with the Forester. I liked higher seating and the visibility of the Forester. I didn't care for the large touch screen and lack of physical buttons of the Outback. The Outback is a little prettier, though
You forgot to mention the different roof racks. The outback leaves you stuck with the stock bars. The forester can be equipped with any aftermarket bars which allows far more things on top which was important for me for larger heavier loads.
I was considering buying the Outback recently until I read about the spontaneous self-cracking windshield problem. I read several articles that there are now three class-action lawsuits regarding this and that the number of cracked windshields is now up to 2.5 million! Now I’m not considering this car anymore. 🙁
Without watching the video, I have to say that If/When Subaru decides to bring back the Forester XT, It will bring back a lot of smiles from disappointed/previous FXT Owners/followers.
Well, they are putting the Forrester 2.5 L into uplevel Crosstrek models next year, so I hope that means eventually they will put a stronger engine in at least some Forrester models.
Howdy, awesome comparison as always! I never really thought about how similar these two were until you made this video! I prefer actually buttons for the climate control, so Forester for me.😸😻😸
Thanks for the comparison. Now I'm more indecisive than ever which one I like - lol. No, seriously, it was very informative and helpful to see them compared side by side. It might come down to which one I can get my preferred color.
I would choose another Outback only because Gloomy Grey and Boring Black interior became popular before you guys were born. We LOVE the Ivory leather interior that we have in my wife’s Outback.
I had a 2014 Legacy I bought in 2015. And I drove it 225,000 miles. But I always wanted an outback. So I decided to purchase one. I went down to the dealer I drove a few around. And they ended up coming home with a forester. It just fit me better. I liked the seating. And I wasn’t crazy about the computer screen controlling everything in the outback. I don’t wanna be touching and fondling stuff when I’m driving. I can’t say anything bad about the outback. It’s just that the Forrester seem to have caught up over the years, and maybe even surpassed it in ergonomics.
Thanks for interestin' review. we have bit different specs for these cars sold in our country and i maybe disagree in some minor subjects but this was definitely a nice video. Good job! Subscribed
I REALLY liked this direct point-for-point comparison and appreciate what went into it, although I wonder why your tested Outback was awarded anything for (unlike the Forester) being able to accommodate the turbo engine. The comparison started out with similarly (as possible) priced vehicles, and with the same engines; a very fair point from which to start the comparisons (obviously, in terms of pricing... AND engine/driving impressions which you also looked at)... especially if what's presented is meant for potential buyers with their eyes on what they could afford. An alternate comparison involving the Outback's lowest XT trim (Onyx) would "let in" the turbo engine and thereby factor in any additional points gained in engine/driving impressions for a turbo Outback -- but also gain substantial additional points for the Forester in terms of much lower pricing and better mileage. Anyway... that's my 2 cents. ☺️
You need to subtract .5 from the outback because it can have a more powerful the turbo engine but that’s more money and this was based on comparable vehicles prices
I agree does not have turbo for the price but the point I think is, even if you spend same amount of money to upgrade on the forester you cannot fix a turbo to it and maybe not at all
Thanks for the review and the side by side comparison works well. Just with the audio comparison, if you could play the same music track it would help give a better indication and I don't recall if they both have full sized alloy spares or not. My main question is to do with interior ride height. The Outback looks much lower, but is that more pronounced because of the higher roofline of the Forester? It's more to do with getting in and out of the vehicle and how much of a difference in height would the seating be? Thanks in advance if anyone has that info. Cheers
This video and your video comparing it to the crosstrek is starting to sell me on the forester.... I wanted to go for the crosstrek because it came in a manual, but aside from the transmission the forester seems to have everything else I really want. If the forester came in a manual, there probably wouldn't've been any decision for me, unfortunately they're just not making them anymore :(
For me, I purchased the Forester rather than the Outback mainly because it has a better roof rack system - by far . I can't understand why the Outback uses the clunky system. Forester has better versatility and load carrying capacity. In fact the capacity is one of the best for any vehicle and, for instance can easily carry a 150 lb + roof tent system. The Outback rack is ugly, the crossbars are flimsy and in fixed position - I just don't get it. I agree that the Outback is a little bit prettier. I was also very pleasantly surprised what a great vehicle the 2019 Forester is for long distance cruising during my 7000 mi trip. It is quiet, smooth, solid and handles very well everywhere including fast freeway and high altitude sporty driving Whoever has rated it as not having enough power is wrong, in my opinion. The luggage area is tall enough for several bikes inside, with an inside fork attaching bar. While Subaru builds great cars, I feel that the dealer experience is rather poor. Dishonest salesman, attempted up-selling of unnecessary services and a bit of arrogance. Why does routine service cost three times more (!) per year than on my 2017 VW GTI, or twice as much as my previous SUV, the 2011 Toyota Highlander Hybrid?
Let me say that I have found that the dealership experience varies greatly, so shop around. Also the cost of standard maintenence services varies wildly, also, shop around.
I just least a 2020 outback, and love it so far, I traded in my 2017 Subaru Forester and I hope I made a good choice. I was getting in my Forester 25 City and about 34 highway.. I'm getting 25 City and highway put together on my outback.
I live in Sask Ca. and today -20ish with wind chill was -26 c. This tank of fuel is 13.6/100 but last summer I got 9.6/100 (didn't need command start). 3.6 18 Outback
I commented other day about the roof racks. The Outback comes standard with rails and crossbars however the Forester only comes with rails and you have to buy crossbars. There was one response that Forrster rack system could support a higher load than the Outback. Actually they have the same capacity. So the Outback should have an additional point for a complete standard roof rack system
No Road noises for sure. It’s more win noises cause the sunroof. Toyota Highlander has more road noises for sure. You can tell. I owned a 2018 forester XT . No road noises I can tell you.
@@Monkeyseemonkey79 I’ve been driving a loaner outback for the past week; Yes , you are right; is quieter Probably cause the sunroof. I’m driving a basic outback. But I still love mine 2021 forester. Outback have a different drive and is very nice but I don’t like it that is long. All I can tell is that is quité than 2018 forester. Plus I love the new technology. I recommend you forester. Best thing is super fun to drive in the snow .
I love to drive my Subaru 2018 Forester too. But if you reckon the Outback 2021 is even quieter I might go for this new model. Forester is definitely fun to drive, but im after a bitof luxury now :)
Not a bad comparison but off on some details. First, the Outback has more storage up front than the Forester. The Outback has bigger armrest storage, had pockets alongside the central stack, and even has a storage shelf for the passenger about the glove compartment. As for the rear seats, the Forester also has release levers in the cargo area to lower the back seat. Not sure why you said only Outback has that feature.
Great video. Which one would you suggest will be a good drive in busy traffic areas like in the NY? I ask this because my wife will be driving one of these very soon and she isn't too experienced.
Curious, does anyone know if the outback has a more substantial CVT? I assume there is some difference due to the increased towing capacity of the outback. Great video by the way...these are *exactly* the two subs I am looking at. Good to focus on the different trims but common price, this is how real people shop for cars.
Follow up: I ended up going with the outback, should be here in a week or two. Visibility is a little better on the forester, and you can get a few extra features dollar for dollar, but none of them really mattered to me. Overall I think the outback just feels like a better quality car for the money. The biggest clear downside for me with the forester were the seats...wife and I both liked the seats in the outback better (and we have almost polar opposite seating positions). We both thought the rear seats in the forester were especially uncomfortable. To answer my question above: From what I can tell both use Subaru’s TR580 CVT, although the XT trim outbacks with 2.4L turbo engine (which are rated at 3500 towing vs 2700 for base engine outbacks) come with the TR690 “high torque” CVT.
I wish the Outback was a bit shorter so it didn’t remind me of my family’s station wagon back in the 80’s. Also, all-touch screen commands makes you look away from the road longer than buttons. I need a merger between these two.
The Outback has a heavy duty CVT to handle both the 2700 lb load and 3500 lb load in the XT. Also the heavy duty CVT is cheaper to fit across all the Outbacks.
Excellent review. One thing though. It looks like you have 1/2 point to the outback for having an optional turbo engine. This doesn’t seem to play into the direct comparison of the cars you drove.
I agree does not have turbo for the price but the point I think is, even if you spend same amount of money to upgrade on the forester you cannot fix a turbo to it and maybe not at all
@@terryyouth it’s true, but the points totals should be for the cars being tested, not the cars we could buy. It’s a minor point, but in my mind the true score doesn’t include the .5 point to options that aren’t in the cars. Still, a very good review. Personally, I like the Forrester better due to its smaller size and weight. It is under powered which goes back to the turbo point you make.
We got the outback which is so far reliable in city driving and some incline mountain when we decided to go to the acadia park, It's kinda having a delay on throttle.
Here in the UAE, the Subaru dealership feels as if they are trying to sabotage Subaru. They haven’t brought the turbos here in the longest time. And now, on the Forester 2020, they have decided to bring in only the 2.0 and not the 2.5. We are in March and we have yet to see the Outback 2020.
Very good review.... I would have liked to see an interior noise level measurement...DB level. It seemed from the video the Outback had a little less interior noise. Is that true?
'Sport' is definitely not the most popular Forester, that would be the Premium trim. It would have made much more sense to just compare the Premium trim for both models.
The forester sport is better than the touring trim level or the outback because the touring trim levels are expensive and some interiors don’t look good looking. Also the forester has more headroom than the outback. So for my money I’ll take the forester sport over the touring trim level or the outback because it’s cheap and it’s interior is well looking with a standard orange accent color interior and those cloth seats which are more comfortable than leather seats and the forester comes standard with a panoramic sunroof which the outback doesn’t and it’s an option whether if you want a sunroof in an outback. Also the forester sport has more exterior design than the outback or the forester touring trim level. So I’ll take the forester sport.
I liked the exterior color on the outback and the larger monitor. On the forester I preferred the interior trim and the black rims which are better if you da any off-road driving at all. If you are going to spend over $30000 spend the extra on bsms.
I wouldn't have given the forester half a point for larger rims. More rim means less tire, which means the whole wheel is heavier and doesn't provide as much cushion. Which is fine on a sports car but let's be honest, the forester "sport" is not that. It looks cool but it's less functional. I'd have called it a draw.
This is the best comparison format I've seen yet.
Thanks, Robert! We hope you'll subscribe to see more!
Absolutely agree!!! Really great. Such beautiful vehicles too!
Thank you for reviewing the more basic trim levels. Most reviewers grab the most luxurious versions which most people will never buy
I like this style of comparison with the split view so we can see them both at the same time. Great job!
Thanks! Glad you like our style!

The only problem with the CVT transmission is that it is unreliable, and when they go bad it will cost you over $9000,00 to fix.

Well, they are putting the Forrester 2.5 L into uplevel Crosstrek models next year, so I hope that means eventually they will put a stronger engine in at least some Forrester models.
I have an outback thanks for the compare ...you do feel totally different ..the outback is of course better
Great! Glad we could help ya/make your decision even harder haha 😁
Approach, departure, and break over angles are significant differences for some coupled with the wider vs taller aspects.
I wondered if there would be any noticeable difference in handling, I guess not. Good job guys! :D
I would choose another Outback only because Gloomy Grey and Boring Black interior became popular before you guys were born.
We LOVE the Ivory leather interior that we have in my wife’s Outback.
Station wagon vs SUV. I prefer the higher seating position of the Forester.
For me you get more for your money with the Forester. Plus I like the look of Forester more
Great comparison, keep up the good work!
Thanks!
That Forester is begging for a dual exhaust
It's begging for the turbo option.
Looking for my next vehicle and this was helpful. In other news it only took me 7 mins to realize there was not a puppy in every shot..
😂
Thanks for interestin' review. we have bit different specs for these cars sold in our country and i maybe disagree in some minor subjects but this was definitely a nice video. Good job! Subscribed
Thanks! Welcome to the Car Confections Crew!
So far the best info n comparison of car this guy provides.
Loved the comparison. Could also use input on the visibility aspect.
I like Ur in depth comparing of the two cars
Forester (Interior) + Outback (Interior) = 2022 Subaru XT 😎
Bring back the legend😥
I agree does not have turbo for the price but the point I think is, even if you spend same amount of money to upgrade on the forester you cannot fix a turbo to it and maybe not at all
Fantastic and informative video. Thank you fellas.
Glad you enjoyed! Have a great weekend!
We love our Outback and Forester Touring
Great video guys!!! I like the outback better!!!
Cheers
This was a really informative review guys, extremely helpful in helping me choose which vehicle and trim I should purchase! Just subscribed!
Glad to hear it! Welcome to the Car Confections 'family'! 😁
which one did you choose?
I wish you had started with the Forester Limited. I am 6' 3" at 260. I went for the Limited Forester as it just felt more open for me and the boss.
i am 6'1 280. the sport i like. hard time exiting my Camry
The one main reason why I wouldn't buy a Subaru is the reliability of the cvt. I wish Subaru would go a different route with the transmission.
They come with a ten year warranty on the CVT.
What about the forester standard dual xmode?? That's really important to awd people.
This video and your video comparing it to the crosstrek is starting to sell me on the forester.... I wanted to go for the crosstrek because it came in a manual, but aside from the transmission the forester seems to have everything else I really want. If the forester came in a manual, there probably wouldn't've been any decision for me, unfortunately they're just not making them anymore :(
Superb comparison. Well done. I bought the Forester!
Thanks! Glad your liked the video!
It is quiet, smooth, solid and handles very well everywhere including fast freeway and high altitude sporty driving
Whoever has rated it as not having enough power is wrong, in my opinion.
There are options you can get on outback that are not available on forester
I think the outback comes standard with cross bars built in where the forester does not
forestor looks better in my opinion
Hv c u RCH I ubb b h Bbc chi hv h huh job j John h n hc
I just least a 2020 outback, and love it so far, I traded in my 2017 Subaru Forester and I hope I made a good choice. I was getting in my Forester 25 City and about 34 highway.. I'm getting 25 City and highway put together on my outback.
And what's the update?
My 2018 Subaru Outback with the 6 cylinder engine is the car to own! No turbo for me!
How is it on fuel
@@davidilijevski8942 Garbage. 19 MPG.
The Forester has greater approach, break over, and departure angles.
Yeah, he should have mentioned that.
I wish you would have talked about road noise
No Road noises for sure. It’s more win noises cause the sunroof. Toyota Highlander has more road noises for sure. You can tell. I owned a 2018 forester XT . No road noises I can tell you.
@@carlauditts8514 In the video the road/engine noise seems higher in the Forester than the Outback
Excellent overview!!!
Both Subaru is extremely awesome and offer great reliability. Definitely better than Chevy jeep renault despite being a small company...lol
Forrester. Not as long.
The Subaru Forester is a great vehicle. The only reason I'm hesitating on buying it is the fact that is so underpowered.
I like the out back because I’m a big guy and the camping sleep room in the back would fit me better
Very nice detailed review & comparison. Just subscribed. Keep it up 👍🏽
Awesome! Welcome to the Car Confections 'family'!
Great Video, Very Helpful!
@7:06 Forester also has the optional bird shit package on the moonroof
Hahaha
What is better Sound isolation ?
Great Comparison love it
This video is so helpful!!
Forester all the way
Imo since you're using a Forester Sport for comparison you should've used an Outback Onyx.
I wonder why with both having the same drive trains the Outback can tow 2700 and the Forester only 1500.
The Outback has a heavy duty CVT to handle both the 2700 lb load and 3500 lb load in the XT. Also the heavy duty CVT is cheaper to fit across all the Outbacks.
@@TomTom-gn9mp Thanks for the info.
@@TomTom-gn9mp Seems like a no brainer if you have a trailer towing over 1k of weight. I guess I can't get the forester.
Same ground clearance but Outback drives more like a car. Forester-more like a SUV.
Very thorough. Thank you.
Very good review.... I would have liked to see an interior noise level measurement...DB level. It seemed from the video the Outback had a little less interior noise. Is that true?
Thanks! And yes, Outback is a bit more insulated
I got the same forester in this video. Forester just looks better to me
Agreed. And ain't driving the thing fun enough (compared to my 2015 Forester)
We subaru enthusiasts want manual gearbox, turbo and frameless windows.
'Sport' is definitely not the most popular Forester, that would be the Premium trim.
It would have made much more sense to just compare the Premium trim for both models.
Nice video guys! You managed to break your subscriber mark, didn't you :) Sounds that in your opinion 2.5 engine is adequate to everyday driving?
Thank you! And that's right, it's not too fast but it's plenty for everyday use
Excellent video.
Thank you!
Can anyone explain why the forester doesn’t tow as much as the outback?
I liked the exterior color on the outback and the larger monitor. On the forester I preferred the interior trim and the black rims which are better if you da any off-road driving at all. If you are going to spend over $30000 spend the extra on bsms.
I wouldn't have given the forester half a point for larger rims. More rim means less tire, which means the whole wheel is heavier and doesn't provide as much cushion. Which is fine on a sports car but let's be honest, the forester "sport" is not that.
It looks cool but it's less functional. I'd have called it a draw.
