  • Here at The Meisner Technique Studio, we don't allow students to miss class. This isn't to be unfair or unnecessary. This is because we follow the same rules that Sanford Meisner had in his classes.

I'm homeless. I have wanted to be an actor since I was 7 years old but suffered from an extreme case of low self esteem. I've gained my confidence and currently saving money to attend The Meisner Technique Studio. "How could you be late to your dream"....brilliant! I won't be late. I want this. Thank you.

Hello! I hope you’re well! So it’s been my absolute passion for as long as I can remember to become an actress. But I never pursued it because my self esteem was just so incredibly low. Now though I’m 31 and feel like I am finding that I really don’t care what people think. This has inspired me to give acting a go. However I find I have A LOT of hurdles. Currently im a working mother of 2 young boys and a wife. I live in Northern California (very remote in Lake Almanor). I don’t have access to any classes or opportunities. About 30 mins away from me we have a town that does plays so im going to be auditioning for their next play when they announce it. I have a few questions: is it a realistic expectation for me to do all this? Im highly educated and intelligent (masters degree and current practicing as a therapist, another reason I’d love to join acting). You’ve said it takes 2 (20) years. Am I simply too old?

      Hi Erica,
Thank you for your question. First of all, there is no such thing as too old. You're not a good fit for characters in high school now, but a 17 year-old wouldn't be a good fit for characters you can now play, so don't let that discourage you. When Sandy said "it takes 20 years," he also meant that, during those 20 years, you will gain life experience that only deepens your artistic instrument. Most 20 year-olds have nowhere near the emotional depth as many 40 year-olds. His teaching that it takes 20 years more serves to emphasize that we, as actors, will always be evolving into more complex human beings and creative individuals.
You are correct that your biggest hurdle is your location. I would recommend, exactly as you said, getting started with a local theatre company to ensure that pursuing this dream in practice is as exciting to you as pursuing it in theory. From there, you will most likely feel more equipped to take on the next step, which is finding the right class for you. You may choose to start with online classes, since that will let you continue to get your feet wet, while not disrupting your life too intensely. If, at that point, you are still as enthusiastic about acting, I would recommend looking into the option of relocating within commuting distance to a more major market. This doesn't mean you have to pack up and head straight for LA. There are plenty of vibrant communities in other cities that can become your forever location or could serve as a launchpad before heading to an even larger market.
I hope some of this helped. If you have more questions, we'll be here.

Hi there, are you looking for a monologue, have you already found one, or have you been assigned one?

@@TheMeisnerTechniqueStudio It needs to be a 60 to 90 second in length. I decided to do something from one of my favourite films may be a good choice. I settled with Gladiator a timeless classic. Im currently rewatching it to see if it has something suitable trying to analyse Maximus etc. I have till Sunday evening there is time to change it. I contemplated an interesting sociopath character as well such as Clyde from Law Abiding Citizen or Teddy from the Equaliser so many good films and characters to choose from. Im a fan of the Jason Bourne films but wasnt sure if that was a good choice. Thank you for responding I appreciate you taking the time to do so.

@@FlamingEmberSeal Hi there, we have a video on choosing a monologue, but we will make an updated one shortly. In the meantime, here's this link: czcams.com/video/tRmuwghRbqw/video.html
      Our biggest recommendations are:
      1. Pick material that ideally isn't too well known
1.5. If it's material you've seen done before, try to pick something that you're not intimately familiar with - this way you can make your own choices and not mimic the choices of the actor who did it before you
      2. Pick material that fits you - your strengths and your type, unless the assignment is to stretch these parameters
      3. Keep it closer to 75 seconds than 90. This way you're not stressing about time and focusing on getting all of the words out under the wire

@@TheMeisnerTechniqueStudio Hi Jim thank you much appreciated. Class has been rescheduled due to illess to next Sunday. We have been told we can change our Monologue to a different character if we wish to do so. Tutor would also like us off book due to being given the extra time.
