What 1958 HS Students Felt Their Futures Would Be Like

  • I have been a collector of old films like this one since I was a kid. I used clips from many old films in my television series on the 1960s and in my feature documentary, Sputnik Mania, which presented what happened in America in 1958, the year after the Russians launched Sputnik. It is fascinating to hear what High school students who were from the early part of the 60s generation, early baby boomers, felt their future was going to be like. To me, many of them sound like their parents.

@@sammymillerman High school graduates are generally 17-18, so the class of 1958 would have been born in 1958-18=1940 to 1958-17=1941. 2020-1940=80 so I would say that's right on the money.
I think it would definitely be interesting to have a reunion of all 10 students, find out what they did with their lives, and show them the video and get their reactions. But the truth is, most likely at least 3 would no longer be alive, and there is some chance that one of them died young.

      @austinjrb Před 4 lety +8

This is a weak argument because truthfully, Community College is VERY affordable for those that need the help.
BOG Fee Waivers and Financial Aid end up putting students at every Community College I've been to in the positive... we all have actually gained more money than it costs each semester. This was the case at Antelope Valley College, Santa Monica College, and Compton College. All of us. I don't know a single student that complained about losing money because even the ones that came out of pocket (like me) got the money from the school.
Furthermore, it's not uncommon at all for people to finish their undergraduate programs at real Universities with 0 debt because there are so many programs for people from low-income areas or if they're a first generation college student. AND if you couple this with doing your first 2 years at Community College, then you really have to put forth an effort to rack up some debt.
At this point the whole "college is too expensive" thing is almost a cliche, tired argument that's been addressed for those that actually need to/want to attend. If we're talking undergraduate degrees then it's a good hypothetical but falls apart when put against reality.

That girl was completely right in saying that knowledge is never waisted. But when I say that it doesn’t mean necessarily formal knowledge. But everything you learn, can’t be taken away from you. College is a great space to learn because you have great teachers who will make you question the way you see things now, and also a lot of other students with whom you can share your views and learn from theirs as well. But it surely isn’t necessary if you feel like that isn’t your path. Just keep studying whatever it is, keep learning. It will be handy at some point.

I am a member of this very group. I would have graduated from high school in 1958, except for the fact that I quit school after grade 10 so I can work on the farm. This went well for a few years, but I had an intense interest in electronics that eventually led me away from the farm. I first did a home study course in radio and TV repair, then worked for a while in that trade as an apprentice and picking up more skill in that field. Wanted to do higher level work, so I went back (part time) to pick up a few high school courses to allow me to enter into an electronics technology course. Got real lucky and was hired by Honeywell in 1965 to work as a mainframe computer technician installing and maintaining their equipment. That led to a 25 year career in the mainframe computer field. I moved on from the technician role to programming and software development in my new role in customer support. The mainframe business died off in the 1990s and when I was laid off from that, worked for a dozen years as an independent computer consultant until I retired. My education continued all these years with a mix of self learning, on-the-job training, and taking night classes. This worked for me but probably is not a good plan for today's generation.

Start early. Get a part time job and get some experience in the work world. At the same time, start to look at future career options and what it takes to get there. You can do it right here. Just type in "machine learning" on the search bar above, and you will see a range of selections giving additional information in that field. If that is not your thing try "brain surgery" or "cardiac care" or whatever it is in life that interests you. Then prepare yourself by getting the education needed to succeed in your chosen field. Have a 'Plan B' in case your first choice does not work out. As we go down the road of life we sometimes change directions voluntarily or because of outside factors. Be ready and adaptive to change. And finally, good luck. Sometimes you just get lucky.

Today, since we record ourselves all the time, there's no longer a feeling of wow this is being recorded so I want to sound good. I think that the youth today are still capable of having discussions like these, in fact, I know that we do. It’s just that there will be the occasional joke thrown in here and there, because it will most often be a discussion between friends first and foremost, and the topic just so happened to evolve into that of our futures.
If you take the time to listen to what we have to say, you’ll find that many of us are quite opinionated and informed about the topic of colleges and universities, and you’d be able to find kids in elementary schools who share these sorts of conversations with each other, myself included. Just because some of us make silly videos on an app, or use strange slang doesn’t mean we can’t have well thought-out conversations too. It’s just most of the time, people aren’t willing to see that side and only listen to what the media has to say about us.

My 14 year old granddaughter is already stressed about going to college because my daughter and her other grandparents are pushing her so hard. I have tried to encourage her that THEY can't MAKE her go to college if she doesn't want to, which she doesn't. I also told her that in a few years she may change her mind about it, but if she doesn't have a "specific" field that absolutely requires a degree, then her best option is to apprentice somewhere.... depending on her field she wants to work in.
I say this because like some comments below, people seem to "judge" those who are not interested in college as some kind of loser and they are NOT. -- I will never forget the season of Trump's TV show "The Apprentice" when he had two groups of persons on the roof of the Trump Towers to begin the next season. One of the groups he introduced as having extensive college degrees, and the other group never had any college education! He asked the question, that of the two groups... which group did they all feel was making the most money.... and it was by FAR the group which had NO college education!
Our youngest son is basically the only one in his class of 11 who did not go to college. His classmates are just getting out of college and beginning their careers.... but our son has two vehicles which are PAID for completely, his house has brand new appliances which he owns, and he has about $14,000 in savings at any given time! I told him that I didn't have brand new washer/dryer, fridge, freezer, and stove until I was in my 30's and had been married for over 12-20 years!
His classmates are now $20,000 plus in debt from college and now beginning to pay off those student loans while they begin their careers. That will be find for them, should they remain single until the loans are paid off... but should they marry and their spouse also have loans to pay, those debts will put them so far behind, it will take years for them to really be able to set aside money for a future home, or retirement.-- Which one is better off in the end.
I am all for the David who states that it is worse to go to college just for the sake of going, without really knowing what field you want to be in. To me, college is for those students who are certain sure... they want to be lawyers, doctors, or in a field where they cannot do their dream job without it.

The difference now is everyone follows the advice of that one girl and goes whether or not they know what they want to do in life. And then proceed to go in debt and have their lives ruined because going was useless for them.
I like how they show both sides of this situation. If you can go you should go but until the colleges lower prices to something kids can afford without going into debt it is too much of a risk. Too many people are stuck working off student loans at mcdonalds.

@@superfluffyshmoopy299 There was no Federal Financial Aid in 1958. That one girl who doesn't know what to do with her life comes from a family that has money. When the man spoke of 1/3 of smart students go to college he felt that more kids should go. Far fewer students went to college compared with now in the year 2019. Money played a big part in the decision as you can see by those that raised their hands.

Not as expensive as today, without grants. Few students get a full ride, though.
OTOH, it wasn’t too expensive for my parents, just after WWII, or their fathers, around WWI. Just get your parents to quit wasting their money on hookers and blow and multiple marriages and divorces, and you might be able to afford it, also.
