  • There is no doubt that Sabrina The Teenage Witch left an impact on pop culture. From humble beginnings as a side character in Archie Comics to eventually getting a massive iconic boost from the one, two punch that was the live action sitcom and animated series in the late 1990's and early 2000's, Sabrina The Teenage Witch had something that was special and relatable. So today, I'll like to take a look at the takeover that Sabrina The Teenage Witch had specifically at the turn of the century.

I loved the episode where Sabrina cast a spell on the bully cheerleader, making her nerdier and geekier as the episode went on, and how the mean girl ruled the science nerds and still the school by the end. it showed that she knew how to get power nad find her people no matter what.

I really liked how the magic of 90s Sabrina was fun and kooky and NOT tied to Christianity. My pagan friends are frustrated at the trope that witches worship the devil and demons. So I was sad to see that in the reboot.
I couldn't get into the new show but it did get me to rewatch the old one! I grew up obsessed with Melissa's Sabrina. I had that PC game too! (But mine had a glitch or something so I could never finish it!) I even named my first cat Salem! I loved rewatching it. Those first three seasons are so cute! Thanks for covering it Jordan!

I happened to catch a few episodes by chance a couple of years ago and was pleasantly surprised to find that it was just as enjoyable as I had remembered. Josh was meant to continue into season 7 but his actor chose not to continue and was written out, replaced with Aaron who was introduced through the Scorch story arc. That’s why the engagement and marriage feels so rushed, the writers didn’t change the plans when they didn’t have the legwork they’d have had with Josh. Fun fact, Aaron’s father is played by Robert Picardo, and the episode has a cheesy musical number the cast perform.

I remember actually reading the Sabrina comics at the time when they were adapted more on the ABC sitcom (fun fact, she had a crossover with Sonic The Hedgehog when Archie had the license) and then the series merged with the young Sabrina animated TV show. They basically de-aged her through to magical antics and the cast yet continued the story which I thought was a clever way of bridging the two different shows at the time

I think I remember catching a bit of the cartoon movie on Nick as a kid. Don't think I ever saw any of the show proper. The selection of channels my family's cable provider offered was pretty limited up until the mid-2000s, so I might not have even had the channels it was on.

I loved both adaptations of Sabrina and I even gave the newer ones a shot when they came out. Sadly the lore of the original sitcom was pretty muddy because of the episodic nature of sitcoms and it felt like they lost the plot a few times during its run. The animated series seemed to have it together a bit more story-wise and even became the updated look for the Sabrina comics that were still being made alongside the Archie comics. I owned a couple of these as well as a kid and I remember having one of the cartoon tie-in games for the gamboy color. I feel like the problem with the reboots is they didn't capture the magic of living every day with powers that can help or hinder her. I didn't mind the reboot but it definitely knew the dark tone it was going for.

I LOVED the live-action show when I first saw it when I was 7-8 years old, and I loved watching the animated series too. This franchise and the rise of Harry Potter was the perfect time to be a kid, because it was all so much fun. I got to re-watch the sitcom in later years when I collected the season sets on DVD and my impression of the show was that it was kinda all over the place, but I liked the first 3 seasons the most, but S6 felt like hanging out with friends, and I liked that vibe. S7 felt like the show was being redundant with its "Teenage Witch" gimmick.
As for the animated series, I still haven't watched all of it, and I remember when Netflix and Prime had the series (only 52 episodes for some reason), but I was too lazy to get around to watching it and then it got removed. I've never seen Sabrina's Secret Life, and I only partially watched the Friends Forever movie from a KFC VHS tape and the reason I only partially watched it was because my mom came to pick me up and it was like near the end of the school day as well lol.

And I loved the animated show too! It still had a "made for teens" vibe to it, but it was also child friendly enough where you could understand what was going on. And it seemed like they had more freedom to make all kinds of crazy scenes since it was animated and not live action.

I’m among the rare fans who actually like Josh a lot and he will always be my favorite match for Sabrina in my opinion. I also love Secret Life especially it has such a really catchy theme song. I like the first cartoon a lot too especially because of the Spooky jar and the fact that in this cartoon the portal to the other Realm was in Sabrina’s bathtub! However Secret Life is still my favorite cartoon. As for the college years I actually enjoy those episodes a lot myself but I respect that they’re not as popular with some other people. Thanks again for making this video! It’s one of my favorites that you have made this year!

The live action sitcom was one of the few shows I remember watching consistently after school as a kid, and Salem was a defining influence for dry and sass based humor for me as a result. The cartoon I saw on and off, but it never seemed to strike the same chords with me.

Sabrina's sitcom and first cartoon kept me alive through my early childhood. I can't even begin to describe how happy it made me when I was able to go behind my step-dad's back at the same time one of them was playing. But at some point that became impossible. The few chances I had to use the TV never matched up with the times. Until one day. I got it. It was on. The sitcom was playing at the same time I was home alone! It was a rerun leading up to the premier of the series final, too! Ahh so sad. Except I did not feel sad after a few minutes in. I felt disgusted. It sexist af, and I still have a rancid taste in my mouth over it. I couldn't finish the episode and switched over to Animal Planet. The episode was Season 7 episode 19; "You Slay Me". The Bridzilla thing is what upset me so much.

I felt the fourth season was a downgrade as it cut out a lot of what made the series so charming. I got caught once and my mom was so worried that that sunday we got a special sermon about these shows leading you to a bad life😂. And well… i left the faith, i practice witchcraft(fr), i’m trans, and i love me some devils lettuce, so who knows, maybe i learned it from this show, and not like lessons on being a better friend or taking responsibility for mistakes lmao

I remember going to Disney's Hollywood Studios (back when it was Disney MGM Studios) and they had ads for the 1996 live action show and had set replicas from the show on their tours. That's how old I am... Still loved the show growing up.

The College Years were the best!
I loved the additions of Roxi, Morgan & Miles (Wish Miles was in S7) even though I do agree that losing the Aunts sucked & the rushed relationship towards the very end was weird there were a lot of fun episodes in S5, 6 & 7.

I have fond memories of watching reruns of the live-action and animated series as well as Secret Life when it aired. I saw a video a few years back about the cast of the live-action series saying if they had the chance to go back on set they would, as the series would be "Sabrina the Middle-Aged Witch" which would be cool to see as it would be something slightly new and different, but I don't know if that's ever going to come to be

Though I did see some bits of the live-action show (and for some reason I remember specifically Sabrina Goes to Rome was on TV here in New Zealand a lot for a while?!) while it was on I didn't watch regularly, though as a big Disney watcher at the time I LOVED the original animated series.
As I get older (was about 2 when the live-action stuff started, and 5 when the animated series started in '99), the more I appreciate both the original live-action and animated series for what they were, and have gone back and watched some of both recently - they both still really hold up for the most part, in my opinion!
My sister and I did see some episodes of Sabrina's Secret Life too, and some of the Friends Forever movie, though at the time we were confused because they seemed to contradict each other - wasn't until literally watching this video just now that I realised Friends Forever was made BEFORE SSL lol, so thanks for helping that finally make sense, Jordan!
Had no idea there was a 2013 animated series?? Might have to look into it. And then have heard a bit about the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina but it was mostly negative, and it doesn't really seem like my thing so I'll probably give it a miss.
(Also it's a shame I never got to play the Sabrina computer games, I looked them up and I think kid me would've LOVED them)
One of the most interesting things I can think to add here is that there was a magazine aimed at girls that I think was originally made and sold in the UK, but was distributed in some places internationally (including here in NZ) called Sabrina's Secrets, that included like life advice, beauty tips, the usual magazine fare, BUT also had some fun puzzles, a quiz on the back of every issue (my personal favourite part), AND not to mention 1. Live-action show character profiles which were really interesting 2. A sort of summarised version of the live-action episodes presented like a story - both of these in each issue. I wondered why some of the live-action plots seemed familiar when I was re-watching for the first time in years, and that was why! 🤣

I liked the live action show but I loved the animated show growing up. which probably makes more sense because I was closer to that age than high school age. but I also just didn't completely vibe with the characters (or maybe actors) of the live action. I much preferred scenes at home and having to do with magic stuff compared to scenes at school. plus, I think the animated show is in the same vein as Winx Club and W.I.T.C.H. and I loved those, too! I also had both of the pc games, which I kind of forgot about until now. I wish I still had my pc games from when I was a kid. I don't even remember getting rid of them, they were just gone at some point....

I grew up with the Sabrina sitcom & its cartoons in the 90s before learning about the original cartoon series years later (I won a social media contest for the DVD boxset of the 70s cartoon back in the 2000s, and honestly, it's not a bad cartoon at all. Not as interesting as the 90s versions of the character, but a fun romp nonetheless), but nothing beats the OG ABC live-action series. It was just really fun and exactly what made me tune in on Friday nights.

I loved the live action show. I was a Sabrina fan from growing up reading the comics so I mostly knew what I was getting into watching the show, but I remember being a bit confused that her aunts' names were switched, and they were switched in The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina too. Hilda was the redheaded aunt that was the matriarch of the household, always trying to get Sabrina to do witchy things or follow the rules of the witch council in newer versions, and Zelda was the green-haired usually stout one that was more easygoing and wanted to let Sabrina do what she wants, it always confused me that they were switched in live action adaptations

The body and limitations of a cat but stunted to keep him from trying to pursue his goals again…..but as a cat. And let’s be real, if a regular cat wanted to take over the world they most Definitely would 😂

One of my earliest memories is watching Sabrina play Doom like in a computer at school but someone of the other realm manifested as a demon in the game so he could speak to Sabrina or something, also the animates series I didn't watched it too much like the live action later in Nick, but for some reason I believe they have to have a band play when the saints go marching in, or at least someone humming the tune like some kind of running gag.
25:54 BTW I played Zapped that game was good, Wayforward always putting so much effort on licensed games.
