The scientist is clearly untrusting and careful around John, he’s had problems with people before. What if someone else killed him while the robot was trapped, the robot got out later and ran away, distraught over witnessing its master’s death and questioning the purpose of its own existence without someone to serve? And then you just shoot it?
My theory is that he got killed by bountyhunters,spies or anyone who wanted him to create weapons/soldier robots and he refused and that is why they killed him and the robot saw it
His arm is sparking so maybe he sustained damage trying to defend papa?

I have no idea why the robot sitting up on the mountain hit me so hard haha
Like, he was sitting on the mountain and just saying "papa" over and over again. He sounds confused and scared and seems unsure of what is happening. The person who bought him life is now dead leaving the poor thing without a purpose. It just runs away to hide from everyone and attempts to make sense of whats going on. Seeing the robot go limp after he shot it made me feel horrible, it's just so detailed how the robots' head drops down and twitches once before becoming completely lifeless. This is extremely sad and almost makes me cry when I think about the context of the scenario.

I think the robot did kill his creator. Because this is based off of Frankenstein, and we see the murder weapon left right next to the body.
I think the robot might have been experiencing anger for the first time and acted ignorantly. After realizing what he'd done, and comprehending his actons. He drop the murder weapon out of shock and ran from the scene of the crime. Feeling the pain of what he did, he keeps running. Trying to get as far away from his mistake as possible. Till he is sitting on a mountain, away from everyone wallowing in pain.

The professor was afraid when John came into his building and resorted to bluffs and lies before getting his composure. This is clearly a sign that he's been approached before by threatening people over his work. Remember funding was a issues when you first met him. My theory is that in the creator's notes, he wrote about creating a robot army to take over the world (also hinted by him talking about the people who doubted him) and the robot didn't want that so he killed him, and was sad because he was alone.

That's a easter egg about the story of Frankenstein, because he was created like the robot and after a hard heart break about his creator, he left somewhere cold and lonely place (in the book, Artic), but here top of a snowy mountain where he died...
I also did read the book, this Easter egg is amazing: the monster in fact burnt himself in the arctic at the end of the book, that's what I remember.

It's actually about Nikola Tesla who actually worked in the place that made the first ever robot around 1930s, and he also was working on the technology that would allow electricity to be conducted through thin air, the tests were a failure and he spend all his money on it and no one wanted to fund him anymore so he ended up dying alone and depressed in a hotel room, but yeah, all the events this character goes through are similar to the ones Tesla lived, although the overdramatized version of how they brought the robot to life does take inspiration in Frankenstein.
