  • PLAYING WITH FEEL VS PLAYING WITHOUT FEEL - Brandon D'Eon
So many guitar players stress the importance of playing with feel. I agree with them 100%. Playing guitar with feel is very important because it's how a listener relates to the music. You ever notice that BB King didn't play a lot of notes, but the notes that he played were killer? He was the master of playing with feel

Yeah feel is something that hard to demonstrate. Like Fahey, Gould, uhh Richter, even fucking Cobain had feel, feel is a vague term so its hard to get a video like this right. I think it has to do with struggling through the piece of like playing against the piece in a way but thays poetic and doesn't describe the music. It can't really be pinned down i guess, if you have flavor you have it, if you don't try again a bit different i guess. But theres like a looseness and a control when a player has feel i think, they can distort the effect of the music in real time as their whim wants through dynamics tempo etc, its like a controlled playfulness, or soul

That's like saying meaning comes from language and not the person speaking, listening, or creating it. Language was invented to express. Music as well.
If you're feeling angry, play loud (or fff). Feeling vulnerable? Soft (or ppp). Feeling playful, or controlled, or short? Stacatto. Feeling loose or lazy? Bend or play legato. As someone who lacks emotional feeling, it's definitely not something one can easily emulate. However, I think every melody can be played in every genre, every style and every tempo. In the first one it feels "emotionless" because every note is picking with same stroke force so you get same voice level and can't get any vibe from the notes. And in the next video he gives different strokes and little vibratos to the notes and that makes the "emotion" in that solo. Great vid btw

The major difference here is how long he press a note before moving to another. With 'feel', he picks the strings with different strength to make it sound faintly soft or strikingly loud. He doesn't cut the ring of the sound mindlessly so he adds some vibrato to keep the note ringing. All for the sake of feelings. That's a way to project emotions through the guitar. It's like savoring the taste of a food. You don't just eat something to the point of almost not chewing it. But when you appreciate the food, and you want to savor the flavor more; you play it around your mouth, you feel the taste with your taste buds consciously.

Like it's saying "Hey you. . . person that probably doesn't have too much experience playing the guitar, this is what it 'supposed' to sound like but you can't make it sound like this because you don't have the FEEEEEEEEEEEEEL" When the feel is simply adding in more things that don't really have anything to do with emotions lol they're just techniques. Now I'm not saying that emotions don't play a big role in how you sound, you can definitely hear the difference between someone who is confidently playing a piece and someone who isn't. And one of things I learned is that you don’t have to play slow to make it feel powerful. When playing fast, you can emphasize the notes that start each phrase. Use vibrato. Accents. I know I already mentioned it but phrasing is important. Don’t be afraid to get into it. Bend the rules. Become one with the instrument.

Definitely. Though I think many good players use them pretty intuitively so I guess "feel" makes sense in that context. But it doesn't really help anyone learn it. One of the worst advice I've ever heard given to someone who just bought a guitar is "Make sure you always play straight from your heart". You gotta learn to play first and that's a really bad advice for practicing.

  • @JDDavid

I love how this simple video has provoked such a wide ranging discussion! agreed, if all you can hear is vibrato, you probably will never achieve good feeling. The fact is there is no one technique that is sufficient alone to be expressive. There is one word though, I think, and it's in comments. The word is "phrasing" and that encompasses all the possible articulations of a note (the loudness/dynamic is just part of that) all manner of getting from one note to the next, and the way every note compares to all notes that came before, and all sounding afterward, in the specific piece. Good phrasing is something great singers all possess, and if you can approach the nuance and expressive range of a talented vocalist, you're well on your way! (yes, some singers use vibrato, when it serves the song, but many don't and yet their singing has "feel" ie has an impact well beyond the words and notes on the printed page.)

Idk, vibrato doesn't necessitate feel. Most of the time for me it's standard, which makes pure tones alluring. It depends on what you as a composer want the notes to sound like to get a specific feel.
Letting melodic notes ring out after going to the next note is just a separate feel from playing legato / detaché, or even staccato.
I wasn't paying attention to the pulse, but as an unrelated remark, pulse is similar. It's a different feel, but not a lack thereof as long as the choice is deliberate. Some parts of music excite me for having a hammering, rigidly even pulse.
That's just how I approach composition. It works for me 😎

The difference in my own understanding of playing for years is knowing when to attack soft and then hard in-between any series of notes. From there accentuating rests to encompass the importance of why ur playing and giving meaning to where u dont .

The best way to get feel is to go on CZcams videos of songs and comment “they’re good but they don’t have feel” instead of practicing.

So staccato is without feel. Got it!
