I've seen tons of post-puberty boys with bat drag. They're in 14U rec leagues and they typically can't hit fast pitching. They won't make a good high school team and get weeded out of the game by the time Bobby starts working with players. Bat drag doesn't just work itself out naturally as kids get stronger. "Don't worry about bat drag" is the type of advice you hear from coaches that work with high level hitters to begin with.
This video is quite contradictory. He first says Bat Drag is the fakest swing flaw but then said it exist in young kids who aren't strong enough. Then really gave no indication of how to fix it other than see- saw your shoulders .
We all know it exists, but how do you communicate to a 9yo how to feel something or to make adjustments other than you are just weak and then by the time they are strong enough it too late and the game weeded you out.
Thanks for the video. I agree that a focus on the elbow is not the solution. You make really good points here. Fixing bat drag by trying to fix the symptom (elbow leading) will drive a person crazy. You correctly point to other things such as proper rotation and tilt. That said, you somewhat conflate the issue with your discussion of anatomy, strength and ligaments. It's like you switch back and forth between ligaments/strength/anatomy as the problems and mechanics such as rotation and tilt as the solutions.
Also, appreciate the discussion on the cause. I am coaching a 10u team that we have 3 or 4 kids that have this issue. And as I think of all of them they keep there shoulders very level and tuck that elbow hard when starting their swing. I have some “drill” ideas to help illustrate the need for the changes you discussed. Well done!
Excellent advice!! I'm going to keep this in mind during our practices.
I was a couple hours away from working with my son and was going to talk about the elbow. Glad I watched this video.
GREAT VIDEO....thanks Bobby Tewks
I agree with what he says about “drills”. Everything is a drill. Listening, mental approach, applying changes. Some kids learn quicker than others.
I love these videos... my kid can hit, just not hitting very hard. Rotating the torso makes sense since I didn't recognize that until this. I have that swing trainer that connects to the bat n arm on the way. I hope that'll help
I see the elbow drop in just about all youth player. Sometimes because they have good hand eye combined with youth defense they get "on base" a lot. And people will say "he has a great swing". But get the swing on video and slow mo it and verify it Thumbs up for this video. Keep em coming!
Elbow drop?
@@TheRoadLessChosen meaning the back elbow drops in before the hands and the elbows kinda come together and lead the hands generally causing the hitter to lose the barrel behind the hands and drop the barrel. Thats bat drag and its bad. Bat lag good, bat drag bad.
@@MrCctvtech oh. Racing elbow. Gotcha. That’s tuff to fix. Young batters struggle swinging those bats and it doesn’t get better with age once tht starts.
But as far as the elbow dropping Ted Williams elbow was down in his stance and when he took the hands back that’s why I was asking. Back elbow racing past the hands definitely an issue.
Wow I can't even say how helpful that was. Finally a realistic understanding of the mechanics
What exactly helped you that I’m missing. We’re you confused about what was causing at drag and he showed the elbow racing in? I came here to find a fix for racing back elbow and he didn’t really give one.
Shoulder tilt
Alot of kids keep shoulders level during swing causing hands to drop to get bat on plane but lose power from this then elbow starts to lead
The shoulders should tilt in relation to the ball ie, low pitch = high shoulder tilt high pitch = slight tilt
Love that high quality BWP bat your using for your instruction, im a personal friend of Josh and Kevin at BWP and they make some great products
Wow!!! Amazing
I thought I recognized that guy holding the bats sweater that’s South Western University in gtown Texas where I live!! 😁😁
Hey this is good advice in theory, but this isn't fixing squat. Sorry, you could do this all day with a 9-10u player and they still wont get it. Tell a 11u player, "Hey, just turn better. I'll hold your bat." Bat drag is extremely difficult to fix, It has a lot more to do than this coaches explanation. In order to fix it, it takes a lot of time and dedication. If you want to address this issue, you should have spoken to Ron Sullivan, I would say he's the foremost expert on correcting this issue. He's actually in the trenches fixing it with youth hitters. I'm sure this guy is great, but just not great at conveying this issue.
Good call on Ron Sullivan!
Such a hard thing to fix! Sequence is key to "fixing it" I'm correcting this issue daily with my young guys. Strength is absolutely a factor, but proper sequence and swing direction will alleviate much quicker than waiting for the strength to mature
@@baseballdoctor5473 The problem is with this swing flaw, they constantly revert back. So when you get a guy in to do a session once or twice a week. It's extremely hard to reprogram that path. They can do a it great a million times off a tee, and then when a live pitch comes to them. They completely break down.
@@johnh9002 agreed. When dragging back elbow guys come in, I am up front with them about the practice it will take. Depending on age the program varies
I agree....my take away from this video is "Eh, hopefully they grow out of it" 🙄
Are there any arm workouts that can prevent this?
My 6yo son had bad bat drag swing under everything then we made him rest it on his shoulder preload and he hits everytime now.
Agreed. Same thing here.
Wish you could provide a visual.
Lol my son is 16/18 so far this year at 7-8u but drags elbow bad. His speed to first is saving his butt right now. Need some simple muscle memory exercises to help him or next year might be tough.
Nah. It won’t be tough until high school or travel ball around age 12. But get it fixed now. My son is 13 and it is still an issue. Kid can hit the ball but all ground balls. Has no issue when he uses a light bat or hitting stick. He can hit anything. Pick up weight and it’s a problem. One I think I solved last night. This video didn’t really help as to me it was just an explanation of racing back elbow. He gave no solutions. 1rst had him form a V with the top arm, like showing your bicep muscles. 2nd had the bat lay on his shoulders, 3rd roar ate the hips with belt buckle out first and the rest follow.
He said he’d never felt stronger. He was absolutely hammering the ball. I’ll see how it translates the next game. 🤷🏻♂️
Si!
I’m dragging up! See ya!!
Why is there a green light on the bottom of the knob?
Seems like most of the time it’s a hitter not turning their hips! Than it’s like they are just swinging with their hands until they swing and the hips follow but the hands are already through the path with no leverage or power. I notice that if you have a player just turning their hips first the hands will naturally follow with. May not be 100 but it worked for my daughter.
That’s part of it for sure. But it can be multiple issues.
So is the way to fix it is to rotate? Theirs not really a fix for it
So where’s the fix?
44 pro
Lol
I like how the big fix here was him just saying rotate better as if that helps much😂
It's always small things from the start that make the biggest impact in the end.
It does help! Most of the time the players are not starting with the step of the turning of the hips. Than the naturally/comfortably thing is to just drop your elbow. But when you start turning your hips first it makes it harder to drag! TURN THE HIPS FIRST THAN THE HANDS FOLLOW!
That’s what I’m saying . He didn’t say any drills or how to fix it
The drill was to hold the bat and make sure the force used to resist is with the turning of the body and not the collapsed elbow.
Mr. Madden few things
1. Looking like you've she'd a few lbs man good work.
2. Love the advice from the Plateochurros guy! He's dead on. There is no panacea for hitting flaws. No do Drill X to Cure Y.
Rather he's promoting understanding, and patience! Helping youth players understand why certain things happen mechanicaly and getting them to "feel it" allows them to work on it.
Also, promotion of patience and recognizing that you don't need to fix things right away kids will grow, bodies with change and some things cure naturally.
This is wisdom!
This doesn’t fix the drag for any kid under 10 years old. There’s only 1 way to fix drag for a anyone younger.
This is the worst shit i have ever seen. He literally says nothing to help a kid.
