I love Lena. Her point about privilege is spot on. The entire fucking show was a running commentary on bratty privilege. If you couldn’t see that then you’re an idiot. As she said; if it was about men it would be lauded as a social narrative but since it’s women many people assumed it was unaware entitlement. The OPENING SCENE is so outrageously filled with entitlement I feel sorry for anyone who didn’t understand it was meant to be a critique of it.

Agree with Lena or not (and for the record, I do), she speaks to a generation of women in such an honest, prolific, passionate way. When she first became a "celebrity" (for lack of a less generic word) I found her candor difficult to swallow. Not because it was wrong, or even because I couldn't relate, but rather, because it really pushed to the surface emotions that as a woman, I had been indoctrinated to avoid. In retrospect, I feel like for a lot of us women, Lena made it feel safer to have those bad moments in our lives and be honest about how truly awful we felt about it, and even more, to embrace our grief, anger, sadness, etc. Personally, I feel like Lena is such a pioneer of the modern age. She embraces who she is, encourages other women to do the same, and stands up for what she knows to be true. Watching her interviews/talks/podcast's on rough days invariably leaves me feeling (if not better) more calm, centered, and resolute. So thank you Lena, you badass advocate you!

She's got some growing up to do, but whatever misconceptions I had that her success was somehow handed to her went kicking and screaming when I started my Girls viewing. The writing is genius, and it just flows out of her, like blood, tissue, and a tiny fetus in the medically induced abortion she wishes she had. JK on the last bit. I love you, Lena. You rock.
But next time you do one of these interviews, go for something with a slim leg. A slim leg. Go to American Apparel if you have to.

Keri Brown I think Lena is the product of many of the past generations of little girls, teenage girls, young women and now middle aged women whose ideas were not received well at the time. She was born just before I graduated high school and I can tell you from a perspective of one of those who had to struggle, not always in a bad way, to be heard. Well, if I am being completely honest, it's kind of hard to ignore me, I was voted "Most Often Heard From" and "Most Mischievous" in our high school senior survey so that gives you an idea of how I was, but because I was assertive back then, I was considered "aggressive" and most of the guys I knew were afraid of me because it was odd that a girl and then a teenage girl would fight back at them, slap them and could really win a war of the words with the guys because that was new back then.
I was never put off by her, I stopped and listened to what she had to say. What I don't like is that people seem to put words in her mouth or say that she is the face of feminism and if you are not like that then you are not a feminist and I have NEVER heard her say that. If I am wrong, then I want someone to show me where she did. I think it is great that young women and teenager girls, et al, are becoming and are being allowed to become involved with things and be part of things that they were forbidden to do when I was a kid. I became a feminist, though I did not know what that word meant at that age, when I was told I could not join the Little League because I was a girl, and it did not matter that I could bat a ball better and further than any of the little boys there and I could catch, throw and play. I couldn't pitch worth shit though. But, that always bugged me. I think feminism can be defined in many ways but most importantly by the times you are living in and I do respect and admire her "in your face" kind of style. My generation was "in your face" too as much as we could be which was not as much unfortunately.
Some things may change as she gets older and I don't think she has ever said that her views are all right. In fact, I think she says the opposite meaning that she feels this way and they are subject to change as she learns more and see things from another's viewpoint and I think that is healthy. She seems to want to help give women her age some kind of sounding board and allow people to think for themselves on how they feel and is just there to present her 'argument' or side of things, and that is why I said that I think people put words in her mouth and claim things about her that she has never claimed about herself. At some point the torch has to be passed.

I feel bad that she thinks there was something wrong with the show being about four white girls with white friends. I’m black and most of my closest friends are black. In my travels, I see generally white girls hanging with other white girls. There’s nothing wrong with this IMO. What would have been terrible to see is if they would have cast a black woman as one of the four only to try to appease critics. It would have been a totally different show and probably less authentic. A black girl who has white best friends would be an atypical black girl. She would be hard to write and critics would have had that to complain about. The show would probably have ended up being more about the boring subject of race than about these crazy girls.

Interesting take! As a white person I always feel like it's not my place to speak out about diversity. I feel like, if I were a writer for a TV show, I would definitely want to include POC characters. However, I would hire POC writers to WRITE these POC characters. That way it would ensure my story is accurate, and POC get to tell their own story (:

That is a blatant lie. She didn’t molest her sister at all. The incident involving her sister happened when Lena was 7 -- Lena was curious about the female body so she touched her sister’s vagina. Child psychologists have written off this incident as normal and not indicative of abuse. Moreover, her own sister -- the one Lena did that too -- has defended Lena and doesn’t appear to hold it against her. If she’s not outraged, why are you?

I love Girls and I spend a good deal of time supporting Lena Dunham, whether by reading her book, watching her interviews or even perusing Lenny Letter. I should say that I'm a moderate Republican who works in politics and am a graduate of a liberal arts college for women where I made mostly liberal, feminist friends. I hear Lena and so many others talk about open-mindedness and connecting with those of different values and I wish that women like her existed more in the common ground. There are so many Republican women like me who want to enjoy the things that Lena puts out into the world but when the content feels like a constant jab at some of the things I stand for it's really hard to want to connect. This interview is relatively tame so maybe I'm just ranting for ranting/venting's sake but I hope you know there are a lot of us on the Right who don't stand for or personify some of the things that are assumed about us. And I want desperately to have the conversation with people so that they understand a common ground still exists, even at this weird political time.

I miss Girls a lot. So many shows are just full of these "cookie cutter" perfect characters, whose flaws are not really flaws. Lena created truly flawed characters making mistakes and living their lives. Sometimes it was awkward, sometimes irritating, but that's what I loved about it. There was never a show quite like this. It's funny to me, when what they call "reality television" is a joke compared to the actual realism of that show. And it's aggravating when people say that it wasn't not realistic because it didn't on some issues like race, gentrification, etc. Why is it necessary? Lena spoke of what she knew, HER own reality. Not everyone lives in the same world. It would've been a lot worse,if she tried to speak for people she had no experiences with. But she never did something like that, because she's a brilliant and fascinating woman and it's her brutal honestly that's been scaring people, but it's their problem :)

As Camille Paglia put it: “Lena Dunham to me is the symbol of neuroticism which masquerades as feminism. I mean, Lena Dunham has a lot of problems that have to do with body image that have nothing whatever to do with wider society but have to do with the cast of her own family life and her own family background. She uses the exposure of the body as something ugly and repugnant and says 'look at me I'm presenting myself as I am, If you find me ugly then you are a sexist."
This is the most accurate assessment I've ever read of her. To the misguided 'Girls' inspired by Dunham, I beg you look up Camille Paglia--an actually intelligent, talented, devoted advocate.
