  • What if Ferrari just ran the F2004 in the 2020 F1 season? I've modified F1 2020 to work with modern cars and to have slick tyres. How will it compare to the modern cars?

    If you allowed ground effect tunnels, a massive low diffuser, active suspension and active skirt control with some seriously clever skirt designs plus a closed cockpit the cars could gain as much as 10 sec a lap, no questions asked because you could get double the downforce easily with no drag increase just by using optimal tunnels and wings, enclosing the wheels and cockpit and running active aero and suspension and so on. The regulations are there to stop modern cars from hitting 450kph and cornering at speeds where a puncture could very well cause a death 30% of the time

    • @meta7gear
      @meta7gear Před 2 lety +1

      For qualifying Barrichello had a 1m20.089 in 2004, compared to a 1m18.887 for Hamilton last year. For pure lap time, the modern cars are much quicker. Obviously the race lap times are a different story as today's cars don't have fuel stops and aren't replacing the power unit every race weekend so Barrichello's fastest race lap of 1m21.046 beats the 1m22.746 set in the race by Hamilton.
      Ofcourse give the 2004 car slick tyres and ultimate lap time might be closer. But at the same time if the F2004 needed to only run 3 engines a year and increase its weight to pass more stringent modern safety tests things would be significantly different so comparing across eras remains a nearly impossible task.

Because cars were on a whole lighter, running on heavy fuel would have meant worse relative performance at the start of the race also.
