* WORST does not equal BAD necessarily. SML is a fun game, it is a classic... which I SAID in the video. Its just as far as traditional SUPER Mario games go, its not as good as others. Not even considering stupid spinoffs... like Hotel Mario or Mario's time machine... come on obviously.... those are not TRADITIONAL Super Mario games.

Super Mario Bros 2 (Japan), i.e. "Lost Levels", is far worse for being so hostile to the player.

It is so good the band Iced Earth even stole the stage 2 music in the song Desert Rains, SML is one of the best early Gameboy games and I rather much rather play it than play Lost Levels again.

I always loved Super Mario Land! Sure it’s a bit odd if you’re expecting it to be more like Bros., but it’s a fun game in its own right. Great soundtrack.
The thing is the weirdness of SML eventually evolve to becoming the Wario Land franchise. Even back then people knew it felt weird but still fun and Nintendo knew about it too which is why by SML3 it became WL.

See when I say worst, that doesn't mean its a bad game. It is fun and a classic as I stated in the video, but for me out of all the traditional Mario games, this one is the worst :P

I'm glad that Super Mario Land 1 is on Game Boy NSO. Now we still have Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 & Wario Land II remaining left to go for Game Boy NSO in order to complete the entire Super Mario Land & GB Wario Land trilogy for Game Boy NSO.
Also, for the Frog Bells and Tolls game, Prince Richard, the rival of Prince of Sable/black hair prince, debut in this game before he made a cameo in The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening with the frogs in that house near Kanalet Castle.
The frog game was one that didn't get a release here but it's called For Whom the Frog's Bell Tolls and it runs on the same engine that was used for the Link's Awakening which came out a year after the fact and had the same team that worked on it. The game is alright for the most part but the plot was one of the most bizarre things I'd seen on a Game Boy game when I played it as there's a lot of fourth wall breaking as well as references to other Nintendo games at that time. It does have a English fan translation which was well done.
And of course the best never comes to the West. I hate what they put on. The only RPG they could add and they wont do it. This online sucks. They put either Crap or RPGS I bloody OWN on this service. It's a load of BS

Meh... the whole nintendo online service is wack. Rather emulate this game and even play super mario land DX which is a fan romhack in color and with updated gfx. There is even that fan remake SNES homebrew.
The service is really just an optional offering from Nintendo, people only sign up for NSO cause online play and cloud saves are held hostage behind a paywall.

The biggest issue is that companies never learn how to properly emulate old systems. Where's the LCD display filter, where's RGB-like CRT filter? Why there's only garbage RF-like "retro" filter and raw pixels. And also a frame you can't turn off. Also the game list? Not alphabet order sorting or genre sorting? Those features are so easy to add that it would probably take less than 3 hours to properly implement *all* of them.
You're nuts, SML is one of the few Mario games that I play over and over. Best end theme too.

I know a couple of others have mentioned it, but there's a fan translation for The Frog for Whom the Bell Tolls, and it's absolutely worth trying. It was directed by the person who would later do Link's Awakening, and it feels very similar in terms of tone, humor, and story. The combat system is pretty simplified, but the rest of the game absolutely makes up for it!
I remember completing SML on a lunch break on a spoiled kid's Gameboy with batteries I brought and I can sing you the victory music from that day.
Worst how? It's one of my top 5 2D Mario games, man!
The "non-slippery" physics, the creative stage themes and enemy designs, the amazing soundtrack.
It's the exact opposite of New Super Mario Bros.
There's something about this game that every time I play it, I can't stop until I get to China World... because yes, China World sucks...

Super Mario Land has some of the best closing credits music on the Game Boy.
Super Mario Land is definitely one of my all-time favs, Brother. Although, it doesn't 100% feel like a Mario game, it still is pretty decent for a Game Boy game.
FYI, Mario controls more precisely in SML when you're walking, not running.

The Frog for Whom the Bell Tolls is a lot of fun. A light action/adventure RPG with a good sense of humor. Get the fan translation and check it out properly. WELL worth it!
So they finally added 3 Gameboy launch games that should have been on the Switch Online service since Day 1. They couldn't even bother to steal the Romhack that turns SML into a GBC games. That's something that people would get excited for.
All three of those were Game Boy launch titles in the USA. I am a fan of Super Mario Land. It was wild to be able to play a Super Mario game on a portable system in 1989. It has twitchy controls due to the size of Mario's sprite being a micro version of his larger NES sprite. Since the GB uses a smaller resolution they could either zoom it all in (like with SML2), or shrink everything down to preserve the larger stage sizes. I like both games, but I think keeping SML with a larger sized stage was the right choice for that game. I believe it was also the first time we hear a Super Mario game in stereo. Great catchy tunes too.
For people around my age, getting this at launch alongside the game boy with Tetris, it Was amazing to have a full fledge super Mario in your hands, you could take with you! (there are even some shooter levels) they did some new stuff in there the other Mario games never tried before, so it still gets a heavy blast of nostalgia for me personally..
Gunpei Yokoi creator of the Game Boy and legend in his own right, was in charge of this project..
The "frog crap" is actually a fantastic action RPG game from the team that delivered Link's Awakening soon afterwards. That's a great game, really, but I have to admit that having it in japanese only is a bummer. There is a fan translation around on the Internet and if you have the chance, really give it a go. It's quite unique and a truly good game
These 3 games were God Tier back in the day when you compared them to Tiger Electronics handhelds as their competition.

Super Mario Land 1&2 are not the worst Super Mario games, they are 2 of the most unique and rank amoung my favorite. Especially the DX versions.
Frog for whom the Bell Tolls is a great RPG Adventure on the Gameboy. There is a full English patch as a Romhack. But it's only great when compared to other Gameboy games. You might already have the English Translation on one of those many devices that come with ROM dumps that include too many extra games for all the systems. This might be an interesting video to make to check out the game in English since it is relevant to the Switch online service.
The sad thing about Super Mario Land Nintendo could of remastered it for Nintendo Switch online to improve it but they didn't. To get the remastered version you have to look for a fan remaster. You can buy the fan remaster on a Gameboy Advance card with both Super Mario Land and Super Mario Land 2 and they both are in color.

While I love the main Super Mario Bros. franchise I always had a soft spot for Super Mario Land as it was my brother's first Mario game he play so when he move on and play the main ones on NES and Super NES, it felt different to him whereas I started with Super Mario Bros. 3 so when I went and play SMB1 & 2, they felt different to me too. People need to realize not everyone first Super Mario game starts with SMB1. Super Mario Land is a classic and also a breath of fresh air since it is the second Mario game that doesn't take place in the Mushroom Kingdom and the second that doesn't had Bowser as the main villain.
Kaeru no Tame is one of the best GB games ever, hands down. I remember it fondly when I was first learning Japanese.

Super Mario land is one of my favorite GB games of all time. I also had a lot of fun with baseball as well. This doesn't affect me though as I canceled my switch online subscription a long time ago seeing as how no one in my house used it much. Still, it is nice to see people have access to these games if they don't know how to emulate, or don't have them on some older systems (like Wii or 3ds.)

Super Mario Land does feel different than Super Mario Brothers. I remember the first time I played on Gameboy, the controls felt different.Though still a good Mario game but the controls could have been tighter.

Can't kick the turtles, that's not right and looks like he moves way too fast, like a sensitivity slider is set too high. The baseball game looks way too slow. Wonder how long it takes to play through 9 full innings. I bet it's a while.

Mario on gameboy was and still is one of my favourite marios.
Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru is a Nintendo developed action RPG that never came out in the West. Like Mother 3, a fan translation has existed for quite some time. It's a shame Nintendo doesn't feel these games should receive official translations.

Don't know what took so long. Seems like that should've been a day one release. Besides the Tetris pack-in that was the first and only game I bought for a while. Nothing else was that interesting that I wanted to afford.

Don't know what it is with people and SML, lol. Guess it's a nostalgia thing. That game is so primitive, controls feel off, the shooter sections are out of place... Definitely the worst classic Mario game though serviceable.

Lol have a modded GBC with bigger screen so I can play this how it was meant to be played. Would be weird playing this on switch. It’s a cool game but they should focus on putting better games on the switch online tbh. Not often I disagree but Mario land was great it was an early game boy game we didn't expect nes like graphics from a handheld at that point. For what it was the graphics are great it has a variety of levels as well. I wouldn't say it's the worst Mario game ether you forget the virtual boy Mario game that was awful.

Yeah, I'm with you on the first Super Mario Land, it'a clasaic, I have in my collection, but I don't think I'll ever play it again. Super Mario Land 2 on the other hand, now that's a great game. Everything that followed Super Mario Land 2 on GB and GBC was and still is great.
