Caius was a perfect antagonist! He had it all, and the English voice acting is excellent. This ending is so dark and epic, I loved it and couldn't wait to play LR!!

ff13 series is so underrated..i loved this series i like the voice acting..it suits all the character..for me this is the saddest ending from all the ff series i played from ff10 - 14. serah is one my favorite character next to yuna and lightning..and i got teary eyed when serah dies..and yes guys can cry too!
Yeah I finally finished this game and I was really heartbroken over Serah's death. I knew it was coming but the ending threw me off. I really felt bad for Noel and Hope who tries so hard to save the future but it was a no-win situation. They couldn't fight Caius forever, sooner or later he would succeed or he would die. Either way there was no way for there to be a happy ending. It was a bold step by the creators of the game but it made everything more richer and compelling. I'm eagerly playing LRFFXIII to see how this amazing series ends.
+black_oni 187 FFX was my saddest ending before this, but this one overtook it in sadness. For me FFX and FFXIII-2 are the saddest endings in any FF. My three favourite games from the series are 10 and 13/13-2. Not played 13-3 yet

When you see serah die(and feel so sorry for noel because she was all he had really), and then mog go down like that, and see all the chaos unfolding around them, man it's a bitter pill to swallow. I felt so sorry for them. First ending in the series to flip the common "everyone lives happily ever after" ending. These are the endings that are the most powerful imo. The ones that stick with players. My other fave is X, which is also very sad...but this one is even more sadder :(
You're right, the series should have ended here. All this resulted in the horrible game known as Final Fantasy XIII-3. Overall the XIII series were a disgrace for the series. These 3 games were the worst thing to happen for the series.

Who else thinks that Hope deserves a round of applause for working so hard behind the scenes to make the future better. I mean he did a hell of a job helping out Noel and Serah. But thats just me, i'm a big fan of Hope because he (in my opinion) has fairly good character developement.

Why do a lot of people hate the ending? Yes it's kind of a bad ending, but that's what made it different from most games with "happy ever after" fairy tale ending. It also makes you think about the ending, and personally, the ending is quite deep. Thinking about how Serah died right in front of Noel's eyes, it's exactly the same as what Caius felt every time Yeul dies. And Caius particularly said in his final words that Noel has to bear the burden of the "eternal paradox" since technically, Noel became a guardian when he killed Caius. Deep right?
My issue isnt that it wasnt a great end. See, I loved type-0's ending to pieces. Cause what you did made an impact. In this game you literally did as much as if you didnt even exist.
I don't hate the ending because Serah died , I hate it because of the way Ciaus died . That cinematic action was so not necessary . Noel doesn't want to kill him , but is offered a choice nevertheless , then if you show mercy he stands there like an idiot holding the sword close to him . Just block the attack and push him back , instead of this anime spectacle .

Yup. We have the most collateral with Caius, but Sephiroth did try Meteor which is what Caius tried to do with Cocoon. Instead of killing so many people, he convinced Noel to kill him, and Caius is now reborn from Chaos in 13-13
Never thought so many people would have so many gripes about the choice of music in the final scene. I love it, the juxtaposition of happy music/tragedy makes the scene much more powerful to me.

I like how Square Enix makes me wanna ship Noel and Serah. So much that I forgot about Snow. I honestly think that they should've developed a romantic relationship between these two despite the age diffference. Snow is too big and buff for tiny Serah haha. Even the song lyrics are about Serah and Noel's thoughts about each other like the ship is pretty obvi!
the CGI scenes are so incredibly stunning, I hope they never stop using them even if they have the capabilities to make the whole game look like that. It makes these moments so much stronger.
Pre-rendered cutscenes should never go away, because the directors of the scenes can control every single minute detail. Even with today's real-time raytracing and the uniformity of hardware, unlike in the 90s, the precision and control of pre-rendered assets completely outweighs the technical achievement and unlocked frame rate of doing everything in real-time. Plus, real-time means every single asset in the scene has to be in the game itself, increasing the file size. I'm certain that the animation data, unique models, VFX, and sound effects in this scene would be larger than the video file if they were all added up together.

Lhi Yen Actually, I respectfully disagree. The "music" in FFXIII and FFXIII-2 is horrible. To be more specific, the music with actual lyrics was just a horrible idea all the way around. It was beyond annoying having to listen to it in-game, while listening to characters converse; The music for the ending was HORRID. It was some disgusting mix of jpop/80s bullshit, and it didn't match the tone of the events AT ALL. However, I had cold chills running up and down my body when the chaos was released, that dark undertone started up, along with the chiming of the clock. You aren't doing yourself any favors by either by stating, "Well, it's not Square-enix, or me, it's everyone else who supposedly can't grasp the "genius" or appreciate the music." Yep... it's everyone else, right?

It hurts. It really hurts to hear Noel scream like that... :( I must say his VA did an excellent job with that. This ending, it's full of hope, full of happiness, full of surprise, anger, sadness, shock, and confusion. That's why I love it!

True, but like Noel said, it rippled up and down the time line. So maybe she saw her sister in crystal, past events that have changed back to the way they were. Hope some of this is explained in Lightning Returns.
What great ending... Until Serah died. I feel so sorry for Noel. The one time he finds another best friend, she dies just like the last. I hope Serah comes back In Lightning Returns And I hope she gets reunited with Noel :)

The sheer desperation at the end of this video is so difficult to take, especially after how hard hope worked, and the fact that noel's only real friend was serah. It's so brutal and blunt the way it unfolds in the last moments the emotion in this ending is pretty ridiculous :(

Guys, the scene isn't being ruined by a 'happy' song. This song, New World, is talking about how even though we loose loved ones we must find the strength to go on knowing we'll always have their love. When it's played during this scene, it's almost like Serah is saying goodbye to Lightning, Snow and Noel. Almost like she's saying even though I'm gone, I want you all to continue to hope, live and fight for a future worth living in, even if it means I can't be there with you. This is why I think it works so well with this scene.
Got bored with the final dungeon and just watched this so I could go into Lightning returns. Holy shit, I love how everything was actually good, and then 4:00 minutes before the end, everything goes to hell

I find it just way much harder for Snow, in Lightning Returns: He was unable to save Serah and wasn't even there, when she died. And than 500 years passed, until Lightning came back..... I understand, why he is so full of hate against himself in the next game.
When Serah says ''Thank you...'' just before she dies do you think she knew that she was going to die and said that as a thank you to Noel for the journey OR did she just say it and then saw a vision and died. I like to think that she knew it was coming, accepted it and wanted to thank Noel for the last time.
This had to be one of the darkest moments I've ever seen in a Final Fantasy. Note that I said ONE OF and not THE darkest, I'm well aware that there are some pretty dark FF games.

Y'know I figured Final Fantasy 13-2 would end on a cliffhanger, given it's development and that it's the second in a trilogy, but holy FUCKing SHIT OH MY GOD I don't think things could possibly have ended any worse. My week is ruined. This is now my favorite Final Fantasy game.

I was already sympathetic towards him, but then I played Lightning Returns and understood on a whole new level. People in that awful future have endless lifespans, but can still be killed. Imagine your loved one dying in front of you of some accident, but you keep living. Now imagine EVERYONE you love dying one by one but you're still alive. Caius is completely justified in his nihilistic motivation, and IMO if he didn't hold the Heart of Chaos, killing him would be a far less morally gray choice.
The ending, while completely depressing and bringing a tear to my eye every time I watch it, is completely perfect. If the future was fixed, and time was fixed, Serah and Noel would have become a paradox themselves.

One of the best final fantasy's ever and trust me I've played them all except for 1,2,3,11 and some of the off-shoot games. Incredible, I love the way Noel's eyes look when the world darkens and Chaos arrives! Can't wait for lightning returns to hit steam! Any ideas when it might happen guys?
The first game's ending uses a breakup song for everybody getting back together and being reunited, and this game uses a happy song of traveling to a new world and living a new life filled with opportunity while people are dying, screaming and crying. I don't even.... I love how in the third game they just stuck with an instrumental medley instead of finding an actual song with fitting lyrics. XD This, and another, is my favorite trilogy ever, but at the same time, that's not okay. XD

Yeah, for the sake of being unique. In order to grasp the whole thing, though, one must read the compendium provided thoroughly, which I find a lot of people guilty of not doing so, hence the lack of understanding, or if they did, find it too complex for their taste. Personally, I like it :)
TaeNiMiku I've been playing final fantasy since ff6, and from 6-10, the storylines in those games while having some depth and mystery would at least make it a flowing experience you could easily follow, and even if you missed some details you still got the story. FF13 was, frankly, a massively contrived storyline, and this one with timeline paradoxes.. what the flying fuck is this mess? Final fantasy does not need to be this complicated, this is the series that brought us progressive stories like ff9 or 7, and you didn't need to spend days reading logs about lore to understand them.
It's off the charts, kinda nonsensical in a way. I understand the trilogy, but you have to view it like some sort of ancient mythology that doesn't always make perfect sense but is very special in it's own way.

I honestly think this is one of the best endings I've seen in a game. I don't even really want to play the next one- I think it's fine as is. She messed with the timeline and thus, she died. Its simple and powerful, it stays with you and doesn't wrap things up with a nice bow like many other games. But I love unhappy endings, probably why I'm also a Kubrick fan. They can often have much more of an emotional impact.
I cried at this man. I was so upset that SE killed Serah but this ending is pretty awesome. Not every story has a happy ending, I've learned to accept that. Ending song was great though! I loved it!
In the end Noel gets the of Etro because he accindintly killed the Godess. Noels hands were still on the blade so it doesn't matter he still gets the power of Etro since Cauise is dead and also the Godess. Its still awesome to see Noel with infinite dark power in the next game.
When something really bad happens people sometimes carry the burden, even when they're not to blame. They think about what they could have done differently. Maybe Noel thought he could have done something differently; like not raise his blade to Caius, which, by doing so, put himself in a position where Caius could grab Noel's arm and lunge his weapon into his chest. Maybe he thought he could have kept his distance, or tried harder to convince Caius to stop.
Hopefully I want get too much crap for this but this ending is one of the best endings anywhere, yeah it wasn't a happy ending but twist, cinematics, hope looking all sharp but sad, and then Caius talking all dark in the background. Loved it!
From the beginning of the game you had no chance of ever beating Caius. He planned everything out over centuries! The smirk on his face is priceless when you show mercy. It's like he knew you(the player) was going to do so.
for those that dont shit about snows creation inspirations hes from the classic, FF8 hes basically a hybrid of zell and seifer, attitude fighting and looks, and noel is a mix of tidus and squall, both young and talkitive but yet more fixed on missions like squall..

16:28 I love that ominous choir! It was also heard in the OST used to promote the game for the first time, titled "First PV", or most likely, "First Promotional Video". It's also probably not too far of a stretch to say that this little choir is kinda a "theme" for Etro since it plays at parts associated with her, despite us as the player never actually seeing Etro's physical form. In fact, we really don't see too many gods in FF13 outside of Bhunivelze. No Pulse, No Lindzei. They're all crammed into the datalogs, never to be seen, which is a shame.

Serah and Yeul have the Eyes of Etro, forcing them to see visions of the future, and each vision depletes their life. When they fixed the flow of time, the timeline changed so drastically it killed her.
Because the music doesn't fit is why it's so perfect. Composers and editors know how to use music to manipulate emotions to match the scene. Likewise, they can also use it to lull us into a false sense of security. It's done all the time in movies, tv, and games.
man so many things happen in the 13 series. still though crazy to believe that it all started with the usual final fantasy formula of one nut job trying to end all life only to reveal the end was really coming because one girl who was repeatedly reborn with all her memories intact and became a complete contradiction of herself and a man who was so tired of life choose to bring armageddon. it's quite the story of plot twists and turns. pretty big gamble to use time travel as a concept for 13-2 but i think it paid off well enough for them. though i do honestly have to say noel and serah make a better couple over snow and serah but that's personal preference on my part since i did like snow to the point i made him my heavy hitter in 13 with lighting being the speedy ravager with her army of one attack.
I think it's part of what made the scene so awesome. With that music playing, it seems like it is going to be a bittersweet ending. But hearing it fade off and the sky starting to darken, you realize that everything is going to go horribly wrong.

Yeah, it was a depressing ending, but you have to give square enix credit for the plot twist since the game had sort of a upbeat feel that convinced you every thing would indeed be solved. Even the end of final fantasy 13-2 made it look that way until like the last 3 minutes of cut scenes.

+Terence Person It's the journey that counts, not the destination. Square Enix is either famous or notorious for making games that have awesome, life-changing "journeys" with sad or downright depressing endings but it's kind of neat if you think about it.
Can anyone honestly explain to me what the fuck happened in the beginning of 13-3? I thought this is ending blew and mainly because they're like "Oh to be continued" You motherfuckers tested my patience with FF13 and got me back on board with 13-2 cause of the pet system and platforming that was a bit clunky. But then you pull the "Lightning" is a servant of God trying to save the damned before the world ends. I mean what the fuck Square Enix? I am laughing at the story of FF13-3 right now xD I thought this was suppose to be serious haha. I feel like another game was supposed to be between FF13-2 and Lightning Returns. Lightning was the knight of the Goddess to protect Etro and after Etro died by the cause of Noel, Lightning descended and was stripped of that title. She made a deal with the God Bhunivelze to revive her sister Serah. Serah corrected the timeline because back then, Lightning was written out of history so in the beginning of FF13-3, Lightning is taken to Luxerion to begin her quest. The world is going to end in 13 days after 500 years of Lightning's crystal sleep from 13-2 and Bhunivelze is planning on creating a new world. Lightning needs to send the conflicted souls to the new world by helping them during side quests within 13 days or else they disappear (Thus, she is given the title as the "Savior"). An oracle drive determines the future and it showed that Lightning was a threat, leading people to believe that she is going to destroy everything. Basically, we all know that in the wayy beginning, Lightning is a strong solitary woman because she destroyed her weak self to become strong. FF13-3 is about Lightning trying to regain her weak self and there is a life lesson here saying that Lightning can't save the world by herself and that she needs others to help her because she's human. Lumina, a girl that usually gets in her way is actually Lightning as a child. She represents Lightning's weak personality that she abandoned years ago. And when they join as one, Lightning can feel whole again. In the end, Lightning found out that Bhunivelze is creating a world where dead people from the previous world are forgotten which means that Serah will be forgotten. Lightning tells her that dead people live through people's memories of them and that it isn't human to not feel grief or depression. In the end, Lightning's friends help her defeat Bhunivelze and when they transfer to the new world (It's literally the finale of fantasy and Gods and flying cars and big chickens like chocobos and moogles no longer exist). The new world is a normal world where there are cars and no upside down trains and no chocobos. It's entirely like our reality world. Lightning is living a completely normal life from there on in the new world. Please excuse my essay lol. Correct me if I'm wrong cuz I'm pretty sure this is how it went down.

That's purposeful. Quite a few narrative works use the same style of storytelling, as the happy music lulls you into sense of security(that this will be typical happy ending) and then HEAVILY contrasts with the actual things happening, making it all the more shocking and depressing. Its quite commonly used technique.
I don't think the song is so happy and it actually fit for the ending if you listen to the lyrics "Bady, I'm gonna see the new world with nothing but the love you gave me" You have to think that it is from Noel's perspective. He is going to the "new world" and he only has the memories and his love for Serah with him.
yea it sounds like a happy song but when you hear the lyrics it fits plus I think its funny cuz you hear this happy sounding song and you think its going to be a happy ending but its an incredibly sad ending
Ya know this ending reminds me a bit about the Final Arc of Yugioh 5ds Specifically, the heroes believe they won by defeating the big bad, and then realize that what the Big bad WANTED happened with their death/defeat 5ds also has happy music, but once the reveal happens it switches to dramatic, unlike here (until a bit later) for better or worse.
@@thaneros No, throwing away everything that the first game set up and then shitting on it in the second game makes the second game a waste of time. You spend so much time trying to revive Serah in the first game, and then the second game kills her off. And, this didn't even need to happen. FF13-1 ended on a good note. Yeah, Fang and Vanille were crystallized, and the fal'Cie caused a lot of deaths, but there was still hope for humanity when Lightning and her friends defeated Orphan and when Ragnarok stopped Cocoon from falling. Plus, you got Serah and Dajh back. It was a bittersweet ending, but humanity was saved. And, then FF13-2 shat all over that by adding a bunch of unneeded shit. First of all, Serah didn't need to be a seeress. The writers made her that way just to have a reason to kill her off. And, I would have even forgiven that if the plot had let humanity live peacefully, anyway. But, no, Caius got what he wanted, and the world went to shit. I don't mind downer endings, but I do mind poorly written downer endings. If FF13-2 weren't a sequel, the plot would have been several times better because it wouldn't have undone the sacrifices made in FF13-1. But, that's not the case. Nothing in FF13-2 needed to happen. It was just a pitiful excuse of a sequel with its poorly constructed time-travel plot.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 had a character saved in the beginning and then killed off in the end, and while I wasn't happy with it, I didn't react as angrily as I did here with FF13-2. No, I haven't played LR. I really should. I recently got the game, but I haven't booted it up on my PS3. From what I've heard, that ending solves things nicely, as you said.
When you replay the game, you see how much is foreshadowed about her death and this ending. The cheerful music still always feels off when you watch it with the cutscene though.

Yeah I finally finished this game and I was really heartbroken over Serah's death. I knew it was coming but the ending threw me off. I really felt bad for Noel and Hope who tries so hard to save the future but it was a no-win situation.
They couldn't fight Caius forever, sooner or later he would succeed or he would die. Either way there was no way for there to be a happy ending. It was a bold step by the creators of the game but it made everything more richer and compelling.
I'm eagerly playing LRFFXIII to see how this amazing series ends.

When you see serah die(and feel so sorry for noel because she was all he had really), and then mog go down like that, and see all the chaos unfolding around them, man it's a bitter pill to swallow. I felt so sorry for them. First ending in the series to flip the common "everyone lives happily ever after" ending. These are the endings that are the most powerful imo. The ones that stick with players. My other fave is X, which is also very sad...but this one is even more sadder :(

Why do a lot of people hate the ending? Yes it's kind of a bad ending, but that's what made it different from most games with "happy ever after" fairy tale ending. It also makes you think about the ending, and personally, the ending is quite deep.
Thinking about how Serah died right in front of Noel's eyes, it's exactly the same as what Caius felt every time Yeul dies. And Caius particularly said in his final words that Noel has to bear the burden of the "eternal paradox" since technically, Noel became a guardian when he killed Caius. Deep right?

Yup. We have the most collateral with Caius, but Sephiroth did try Meteor which is what Caius tried to do with Cocoon. Instead of killing so many people, he convinced Noel to kill him, and Caius is now reborn from Chaos in 13-13
Never thought so many people would have so many gripes about the choice of music in the final scene. I love it, the juxtaposition of happy music/tragedy makes the scene much more powerful to me.

the CGI scenes are so incredibly stunning, I hope they never stop using them even if they have the capabilities to make the whole game look like that. It makes these moments so much stronger.
Pre-rendered cutscenes should never go away, because the directors of the scenes can control every single minute detail. Even with today's real-time raytracing and the uniformity of hardware, unlike in the 90s, the precision and control of pre-rendered assets completely outweighs the technical achievement and unlocked frame rate of doing everything in real-time. Plus, real-time means every single asset in the scene has to be in the game itself, increasing the file size. I'm certain that the animation data, unique models, VFX, and sound effects in this scene would be larger than the video file if they were all added up together.

Lhi Yen Actually, I respectfully disagree. The "music" in FFXIII and FFXIII-2 is horrible. To be more specific, the music with actual lyrics was just a horrible idea all the way around. It was beyond annoying having to listen to it in-game, while listening to characters converse; The music for the ending was HORRID. It was some disgusting mix of jpop/80s bullshit, and it didn't match the tone of the events AT ALL. However, I had cold chills running up and down my body when the chaos was released, that dark undertone started up, along with the chiming of the clock.
You aren't doing yourself any favors by either by stating, "Well, it's not Square-enix, or me, it's everyone else who supposedly can't grasp the "genius" or appreciate the music."

This song, New World, is talking about how even though we loose loved ones we must find the strength to go on knowing we'll always have their love. When it's played during this scene, it's almost like Serah is saying goodbye to Lightning, Snow and Noel. Almost like she's saying even though I'm gone, I want you all to continue to hope, live and fight for a future worth living in, even if it means I can't be there with you. This is why I think it works so well with this scene.

When Serah says ''Thank you...'' just before she dies do you think she knew that she was going to die and said that as a thank you to Noel for the journey OR did she just say it and then saw a vision and died. I like to think that she knew it was coming, accepted it and wanted to thank Noel for the last time.

This had to be one of the darkest moments I've ever seen in a Final Fantasy. Note that I said ONE OF and not THE darkest, I'm well aware that there are some pretty dark FF games.
The happy feel is what made it such an emotional scene. No one expected that ending. Absolutely perfect if you ask me.

I was already sympathetic towards him, but then I played Lightning Returns and understood on a whole new level. People in that awful future have endless lifespans, but can still be killed. Imagine your loved one dying in front of you of some accident, but you keep living. Now imagine EVERYONE you love dying one by one but you're still alive.
Caius is completely justified in his nihilistic motivation, and IMO if he didn't hold the Heart of Chaos, killing him would be a far less morally gray choice.
The ending, while completely depressing and bringing a tear to my eye every time I watch it, is completely perfect. If the future was fixed, and time was fixed, Serah and Noel would have become a paradox themselves.

Yeah, for the sake of being unique. In order to grasp the whole thing, though, one must read the compendium provided thoroughly, which I find a lot of people guilty of not doing so, hence the lack of understanding, or if they did, find it too complex for their taste.

TaeNiMiku I've been playing final fantasy since ff6, and from 6-10, the storylines in those games while having some depth and mystery would at least make it a flowing experience you could easily follow, and even if you missed some details you still got the story.
FF13 was, frankly, a massively contrived storyline, and this one with timeline paradoxes.. what the flying fuck is this mess?
Final fantasy does not need to be this complicated, this is the series that brought us progressive stories like ff9 or 7, and you didn't need to spend days reading logs about lore to understand them.
It's off the charts, kinda nonsensical in a way.
I understand the trilogy, but you have to view it like some sort of ancient mythology that doesn't always make perfect sense but is very special in it's own way.

I honestly think this is one of the best endings I've seen in a game. I don't even really want to play the next one- I think it's fine as is. She messed with the timeline and thus, she died. Its simple and powerful, it stays with you and doesn't wrap things up with a nice bow like many other games.
But I love unhappy endings, probably why I'm also a Kubrick fan. They can often have much more of an emotional impact.
I cried at this man. I was so upset that SE killed Serah but this ending is pretty awesome. Not every story has a happy ending, I've learned to accept that. Ending song was great though! I loved it!
In the end Noel gets the of Etro because he accindintly killed the Godess. Noels hands were still on the blade so it doesn't matter he still gets the power of Etro since Cauise is dead and also the Godess. Its still awesome to see Noel with infinite dark power in the next game.

When something really bad happens people sometimes carry the burden, even when they're not to blame. They think about what they could have done differently. Maybe Noel thought he could have done something differently; like not raise his blade to Caius, which, by doing so, put himself in a position where Caius could grab Noel's arm and lunge his weapon into his chest. Maybe he thought he could have kept his distance, or tried harder to convince Caius to stop.
Hopefully I want get too much crap for this but this ending is one of the best endings anywhere, yeah it wasn't a happy ending but twist, cinematics, hope looking all sharp but sad, and then Caius talking all dark in the background. Loved it!

The game is great. It has the most post-story content in all FFs
From the beginning of the game you had no chance of ever beating Caius. He planned everything out over centuries! The smirk on his face is priceless when you show mercy. It's like he knew you(the player) was going to do so.
for those that dont shit about snows creation inspirations hes from the classic, FF8 hes basically a hybrid of zell and seifer, attitude fighting and looks, and noel is a mix of tidus and squall, both young and talkitive but yet more fixed on missions like squall..

16:28 I love that ominous choir! It was also heard in the OST used to promote the game for the first time, titled "First PV", or most likely, "First Promotional Video".
It's also probably not too far of a stretch to say that this little choir is kinda a "theme" for Etro since it plays at parts associated with her, despite us as the player never actually seeing Etro's physical form.
In fact, we really don't see too many gods in FF13 outside of Bhunivelze. No Pulse, No Lindzei. They're all crammed into the datalogs, never to be seen, which is a shame.
Just can't satisfy FF fans. No matter what Square does, people complain regardless. No wonder why FF has one of the worst fanbases. Ending was great imo but to each their own.
There's a quote I saw that completely relates. "It's impossible to please everybody, but it's very simple to piss everyone off." People need to learn to be happy with life. If they aren't and complain all the time they're probably miserable people to be around.

I like how no one noticed that the happy music stops once Noel comes to the realization of what he did Serah's death wasn't the worst part the chaos spilled forth destroying time itself
Serah and Yeul have the Eyes of Etro, forcing them to see visions of the future, and each vision depletes their life. When they fixed the flow of time, the timeline changed so drastically it killed her.
Because the music doesn't fit is why it's so perfect. Composers and editors know how to use music to manipulate emotions to match the scene. Likewise, they can also use it to lull us into a false sense of security. It's done all the time in movies, tv, and games.
man so many things happen in the 13 series. still though crazy to believe that it all started with the usual final fantasy formula of one nut job trying to end all life only to reveal the end was really coming because one girl who was repeatedly reborn with all her memories intact and became a complete contradiction of herself and a man who was so tired of life choose to bring armageddon. it's quite the story of plot twists and turns. pretty big gamble to use time travel as a concept for 13-2 but i think it paid off well enough for them.
though i do honestly have to say noel and serah make a better couple over snow and serah but that's personal preference on my part since i did like snow to the point i made him my heavy hitter in 13 with lighting being the speedy ravager with her army of one attack.

I think it's part of what made the scene so awesome. With that music playing, it seems like it is going to be a bittersweet ending. But hearing it fade off and the sky starting to darken, you realize that everything is going to go horribly wrong.

Yep, Caius pretty much gets exactly what he wanted. This game is one of the few games where the villain just outright wins.

Yeah, it was a depressing ending, but you have to give square enix credit for the plot twist since the game had sort of a upbeat feel that convinced you every thing would indeed be solved. Even the end of final fantasy 13-2 made it look that way until like the last 3 minutes of cut scenes.

+Terence Person It's the journey that counts, not the destination. Square Enix is either famous or notorious for making games that have awesome, life-changing "journeys" with sad or downright depressing endings but it's kind of neat if you think about it.

Can anyone honestly explain to me what the fuck happened in the beginning of 13-3? I thought this is ending blew and mainly because they're like "Oh to be continued" You motherfuckers tested my patience with FF13 and got me back on board with 13-2 cause of the pet system and platforming that was a bit clunky. But then you pull the "Lightning" is a servant of God trying to save the damned before the world ends. I mean what the fuck Square Enix? I am laughing at the story of FF13-3 right now xD I thought this was suppose to be serious haha.

Lightning was the knight of the Goddess to protect Etro and after Etro died by the cause of Noel, Lightning descended and was stripped of that title. She made a deal with the God Bhunivelze to revive her sister Serah. Serah corrected the timeline because back then, Lightning was written out of history so in the beginning of FF13-3, Lightning is taken to Luxerion to begin her quest. The world is going to end in 13 days after 500 years of Lightning's crystal sleep from 13-2 and Bhunivelze is planning on creating a new world. Lightning needs to send the conflicted souls to the new world by helping them during side quests within 13 days or else they disappear (Thus, she is given the title as the "Savior"). An oracle drive determines the future and it showed that Lightning was a threat, leading people to believe that she is going to destroy everything. Basically, we all know that in the wayy beginning, Lightning is a strong solitary woman because she destroyed her weak self to become strong. FF13-3 is about Lightning trying to regain her weak self and there is a life lesson here saying that Lightning can't save the world by herself and that she needs others to help her because she's human. Lumina, a girl that usually gets in her way is actually Lightning as a child. She represents Lightning's weak personality that she abandoned years ago. And when they join as one, Lightning can feel whole again. In the end, Lightning found out that Bhunivelze is creating a world where dead people from the previous world are forgotten which means that Serah will be forgotten. Lightning tells her that dead people live through people's memories of them and that it isn't human to not feel grief or depression. In the end, Lightning's friends help her defeat Bhunivelze and when they transfer to the new world (It's literally the finale of fantasy and Gods and flying cars and big chickens like chocobos and moogles no longer exist). The new world is a normal world where there are cars and no upside down trains and no chocobos. It's entirely like our reality world. Lightning is living a completely normal life from there on in the new world. Please excuse my essay lol. Correct me if I'm wrong cuz I'm pretty sure this is how it went down.

That's purposeful. Quite a few narrative works use the same style of storytelling, as the happy music lulls you into sense of security(that this will be typical happy ending) and then HEAVILY contrasts with the actual things happening, making it all the more shocking and depressing. Its quite commonly used technique.

I don't think the song is so happy and it actually fit for the ending if you listen to the lyrics "Bady, I'm gonna see the new world with nothing but the love you gave me" You have to think that it is from Noel's perspective. He is going to the "new world" and he only has the memories and his love for Serah with him.
yea it sounds like a happy song but when you hear the lyrics it fits plus I think its funny cuz you hear this happy sounding song and you think its going to be a happy ending but its an incredibly sad ending

Ya know this ending reminds me a bit about the Final Arc of Yugioh 5ds
Specifically, the heroes believe they won by defeating the big bad, and then realize that what the Big bad WANTED happened with their death/defeat
5ds also has happy music, but once the reveal happens it switches to dramatic, unlike here (until a bit later) for better or worse.

What a stupid ending. You go through hell trying to save Serah in FF13-1, yet she dies in this game, anyway. What a waste of time.

@@thaneros No, throwing away everything that the first game set up and then shitting on it in the second game makes the second game a waste of time.
You spend so much time trying to revive Serah in the first game, and then the second game kills her off.
And, this didn't even need to happen. FF13-1 ended on a good note. Yeah, Fang and Vanille were crystallized, and the fal'Cie caused a lot of deaths, but there was still hope for humanity when Lightning and her friends defeated Orphan and when Ragnarok stopped Cocoon from falling. Plus, you got Serah and Dajh back. It was a bittersweet ending, but humanity was saved.
And, then FF13-2 shat all over that by adding a bunch of unneeded shit. First of all, Serah didn't need to be a seeress. The writers made her that way just to have a reason to kill her off. And, I would have even forgiven that if the plot had let humanity live peacefully, anyway. But, no, Caius got what he wanted, and the world went to shit.
I don't mind downer endings, but I do mind poorly written downer endings. If FF13-2 weren't a sequel, the plot would have been several times better because it wouldn't have undone the sacrifices made in FF13-1.
But, that's not the case. Nothing in FF13-2 needed to happen. It was just a pitiful excuse of a sequel with its poorly constructed time-travel plot.

@@thaneros Hmmm...now that I think about it, maybe I was too hard on FF13-2's ending. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 had a character saved in the beginning and then killed off in the end, and while I wasn't happy with it, I didn't react as angrily as I did here with FF13-2.
No, I haven't played LR. I really should. I recently got the game, but I haven't booted it up on my PS3. From what I've heard, that ending solves things nicely, as you said.
When you replay the game, you see how much is foreshadowed about her death and this ending. The cheerful music still always feels off when you watch it with the cutscene though.
There's a lot of messages in the songs. If you listen to the songs, it gives you some hints on what happens to Serah, and Noel.
