Russian wwi “great” overcoat

  • This isn’t a wwi manufactured fur greatcoat but these bekesha’s haven’t changed much since the 1600’s basically just the lengths and the buttons. Buying one of these and just replacing it with period accurate buttons is all you would have to do make this look period correct. I reckoned you bump these up a size from your regular Russian size to account for the loft and thickness of the sheepskin. These come in a variety of colors and most are miss-matched fur colors on the inside and will often be a natural off white color on the outside. Hopefully you liked this video and subscribed if you like this sort of stuff. Please leave a comment with any questions, additional information, or suggestions for future videos and I will do my best to answer them. As always thanks for watching.
    Thank you,
    Devin K.

The Russian size of the bekesh can be determined by measuring the girth of the chest in centimeters. Half the bust is your size. For example, a chest circumference of 112 centimeters is 56 size.

I've been looking for one for ages. The only affordable ones are white and that just won't work for me (easily stained). The black ones seem to have all been bought up. Given how simple the construction is, I don't think it will be too difficult to replicate this with thick faux fur lining and a heavy wool fabric for the shell. Gonna do a trial run with some cheaper faux fur and a heavy wool blanket. I'll upload a video if it works out.
Edit: update, the faux fur worked brilliantly. Faux rabbit fur off Aliexpress is great. But I found a seller on etsy that can do custom work for you for not much more money. I got a honey gold one with the black shell, but a nice straightened sheared collar and a zipper. Awesome stuff for $289 plus shipping.

I bought my Bekesha from a Russian fellow in Ebay; his seller name is "dmisvent0" and he has dozens of Bekesha's in black as well as beige. He has good prices and personally with my Bekesha, all the pics were true to the coat so there were no hidden details.

@@pantx0 I know this comment is from only 10 months ago, but his coats are now all north of $600 which is just a bit much. I could get a brand new b7 parka replica from Turkey or China for that. I found some on etsy and the seller convinced me that the color is just an option and that he can make it any color which piqued my interest. Still the cheapest is still north of $200 so I'll stick to my furlakoat.

Good info. I ordered the size 52 as well, shipped from Russia waited two months to get it, and when I did I can barely get it on. I wear a size 42 in US jackets normally, and that is a pretty snug fit. Was told 52 was equivalent to a US 42, but it's actually a lot smaller. Measured my under arm chest circumference at 113cm. Just ordered another one from ebay, this time size 56 and I'm hoping this one will fit. The first one I got was the beige with white collar and sheep fur, the second one is the black like yours, but the pic shows grey fur. Will have to wait till february when it comes in to see if it's grey or goldish fur. Either way they're really warm and thick high quality for the price IMO. A similar coat would probably cost $500+ new to make, so at $136 shipped is a good deal.

How you find arm dexterity in bekesha? I have one and it's super warm and cool but what I find irritating is arm movement especially at the shoulder seams I find it uncomfortable when you reach for something. It would be much better with raglan sleeves. Do you noticed that in your experience?

Mommas boy you can’t really like clean them, but you can use a baking soda water paste to try and remove the stains and the smell is something they all have you just have to leave it outside where it won’t get wet for a long time and it will go away after a few days

@@DevinK hi there Devin!! I just recently found a baby blue/light Carolina blue sheepskin bekesha (or so I think) left out on the side of the road out where jog. It has the same canvas style pockets in it but it is stamped country of origin as France. Made in Paris (with exact street name-can’t read totally). It also has a unique pocket stitch design on the outside unlike ones I have seen. Also has wooden fasteners? White inside fur/wool?
It also has a canvas “hood”-thin canvas material that would have fit tight to the head. Hadn’t seen it on other coats of similar style. I’m wondering if you can help me figure out when it is from?

@@pantx0 For the smell I can suggest a really simple way:
      smoke
not as in smoking 5 packs of smooth tasting Marlboro Gold 100s, more like wood fire smoke.
This is what we do on our two-three week long trips across Northern Norway.
We mostly pack wool, was when we can, soak our cloth in water, and then smoke it out.
The first few hours/day you are going to smell like fire (not raper fire, just genuine fire) but after that most of the "bad" smells would be gone.
Letting the wool/fur air out for a day outside when not in use will also naturally remove the smell.
