- Its Annual time and 49Y is going in for its inspection. Many extra things needed to be done so it was a little more than expected. But the aircraft is much safer to fly now which is a huge plus.
Big Thanks to Aviation Specialties for the great work and allowing me to make this video.

Cheap annual $3600 for a 62 172. Also corrosion X does not remove corrosion it’s a preventative.
Saw your videos pop back into my feed recently. Great to see you playing with real sized aircraft. Looking forward to many more videos of your flying exploits.
Thank you. Yes i have moved on from the small RC aircraft and have gone to the full scale size. This was always the idea, but back in high school i couldn't afford it. There will be many more videos coming. I have lots of ideas for fun and crazy adventures.
Great stuff! This is very informative. It's hard to find good examples like this out there.
Thank you. Yes that's what I found as well. I tried to be a little more informative and show the information that you can never really find.
I have the same C model...love the O300 continental .... Would highly suggest that you replace your original glass gasculator with a Stevens aircraft metal one..
@user-vo5dg4oq6g That's awesome. I really enjoy my O-300 as well. I'll have to look into that and maybe replace it next annual
Thanks for sharing this video... I think this is the first video that I've seen covering the annual inspection. As I was watching the video, a lot of it I was saying to myself, I could do that myself on weekends when I have nothing better to do like removing the seat, the carpet and getting at the very floor to clean it maybe even paint it a little if needed... the same with the engine, maybe doing a "degreasing" job to keep it the engine itself clean from old oil, dust, and dirt...
I showed as much as i could. The shop alowed me to do an owner assisted annual and i could film any thing I was doing. Opening inspection plates and removing seats the owner can do to help save time. He didnt want mw to film any of the testing as he didnt really like being on camera. Ill have my next annual pretty soon and ill compare last years to this years and see how they differ.
very good
Thank you!!
The first annual on my Mooney was about 13k, lots of catch up maintenance. Second year was 3500, which is a cheap annual.
13k is definitely a hit, but it sounds like you got everything sorted out and your next annual went much better. M20s are really cool planes. I've looked into a few to upgrade to, just havent made the jump yet. still enjoying the 172 and it fits my mission so no need to upgrade just yet.
For a 60 year old plane you got off pretty light. It’s not unusual for people to get stuck with a $10000 annual. Or even worse find out the engine needs an overhaul. Ask me how I know.
Ooff. I do agree with you there. Thankfully the engine just had a top overhaul right before i got it. I was definitely worried it was going to be worse thab it was.
Nice KVCB
Thank you. yes its at KVCB
I noticed yours is an older 172 with a 145 Cont instead of a Lycosaurus, the 2 extra cylinder cost more to service. Nothing wrong with the seat tracks, I heard they are about $1700 each seat.
Yes i do have a continental O-300-d which is a 6 cylinder where as the lycoming would have 4. But the time to do compression test and check the spark plugs forn2 additional cylinders isnt going to make a huge difference in the end for the total price, but i agree probably does make that portion a little bit more.
As far as the sear tracks go they are both good witu no issues. The ADs were already complied with when i got the aircraft. Which isngood as that would have been another big issue to deal with.
Simple solution…get your own A&P certification….problem solved…inspect and sign off on your own plane…or just not do it…I’ve done this since 1985….zero inspection cost since 1985…zero ramp check…mind numbing…
Are you IA inspector,or A&P can sign annual right?
I was doing what's called an owner assisted Annual. I had an A&P IA looking over me and checking everything as we went along. And they were the one to sign the logbooks when all was finished.
A&Ps can NOT sign off an annual inspection. Must have an IA.
@rbrtjbarber I had an A&P IA with me.
You got hosed on the nose and shimmy damper. O rings don’t cost that much. You put that filthy carpet back in without steam cleaning, the whole crappy interior… that’s BS. You definitely don’t want me as an IA… that plane needs work. 😮
That interior looks like my great grandmother's lounge suite, in its current rat infested condition. You went solo on a 172. Now you are trapped. Get a Cirrus or a Sling, move into the 2020's.
