This guy was the fastest driver at the time bar none. Balls in abundance. If only mclaren had od given him a car he could of been a treble world champion. Sadly missed.
0:13 the speed he carries over that kerb! WOW! 0:33 the way he perfectly judges the kerbs! DOUBLE WOW! 0:44 the way he applies the throttle before Lesmo 2! Insanity! 1:00 the way he controls oversteer in the middle of Ascari? The best Monza lap ever
This pole and his pole in 2005 (before the 10 place penalty), are the best laps I have ever seen around Monza. Incredible speed carried through the corners, insanely early on the throttle through the 2nd Lesmo and PERFECTLY places the car over the kerbs. That skill of "kerb jumping" is gone from F1 now. They put barriers on the kerbs to prevent drivers from cutting them - boring!
@@ajmalhussain3574 It was good, but this lap was better. He had a lot of understeer in the first sector in 2018. Kimi was something else on the Michelin tyre. 0:44 that is not normal. That is scary.
2006 pole was with it was low on fuel, while the others used the same amount of fuel that they used from the start of the race to the first pitstop. That explains the poles that Raikkonen had in a mediocre car like MP4/21 was.
@@javiergarridobrito5054 Raikkonen had similar fuel in Monza and Hungary to the others and his lap was insanity if you analyze driving lines. He is literally on the edge of the front axle in an extreme way few in F1 history can do. The onboard tells you everything you need to know unless you are a noob.
Kimi at McLaren was one of the fastest drivers in F1 history. Even Ron Dennis said that Kimi had the most natural speed than anyone he has seen. And this from a man who had Senna, Hakkinen, Prost and Lauda in his team. Kimi was never again the same driver at Ferrari (for whatever reason). Just occasional glimpses of brilliance there.
Its great to have a ex-F1 driver as a commentator as when he does the grid walk he knows who doesn't want to be bothered and I feel he and the drivers have respect each other.
I still can't believe that the V8's could lap Monza in the 1:21's like the V10's could. In 2005, Kimi's qualy lap was a 1:20.878, but he was the only one under 1:21.000. The next 7 drivers were in the 1:21's, and in 2006 it was the top 4 drivers in the 1:21's but their times were fast enough to put them in the top 7 on the grid in 2005! Montoya's qualy lap in 2005 was 1:21.054, still only about 4 tenths quicker than Kimi in a V8 with over 200 horsepower less!! Man, I miss those 2006 cars.
You're right. Kimi was on a two-stopper in 2006. He pitted on laps 15 and 38, and in 2005 he pitted on lap 25......BTW, Montoya pitted on lap 20 in 2005, so Kimi was about 2 tenths quicker than JPM in qualy but Kimi had 5 laps more fuel! Holy shit!!
Gotta love Martin Brundle. And this was a beautiful piece of driving from Kimi. He needs get back into F1. There has to be a reasonable seat for him somewhere in the future.
It was mainly in the extraordinary grip they had from the tyres in 2006; the apex speeds were ridiculously high, thus what they lacked in straight line speed they more than made up for in cornering speed. Especially the Michelin runners.
Michelin leaving F1 didn't stop Kimi becoming awesome, but it did stop him becoming unstoppable! Although Kimi is a Ferrari world champion (Current last Ferrari world champion) McLaren Kimi was the best, balls in abundance, flat out, super quick, extremely strong! Even McLaren engineers couldn't figure out how Kimi put the car in certain positions, i.e. Spain 2006 Nurburgring 2006 where he came to the McLaren motorhome and said I drove 60 qualifying laps one after the other. 2006 Monaco, Canada, Monza Bahrain China. 2005 Imola, Spain, Monaco Turkey Italy Japan Spa France Silverstone, Canada Germany Hungary Nurburgring. 2003 Season. Mclaren really messed it up in 2002-2006 seasons with shocking reliability, heat shields, cooling intakes suspension blowups, tyre blowups, rear wing issues twice, engine failures Hydraulic issues. Keep Flying Kimi!
What I find strange about Monza is that on the official FIA circuit chart, Curva Grande - the 90 degree curve between the first and second chicanes is not a corner!!. But apparently according to the SAME circuit chart the kink between Lesmo#2 and Ascari is!!!
That's largely down to the rev limit, though; compare this video to a 2009 video - in 2009 it sounds like they're short shifting. It really is the V10s that sounded faaaar different, because they were completely different engines.
@swyer915 he is very good but there is nothing better than the engine voice.. in greece where i live the commentator doesn't speak at live onboards and i prefer that
now weve got 2.4l v8s when i heard that i thought this must be a joke its a shame what fia did with the sports with all of their regulations and limitations. they try to create cars that are even more able of overtaking but they forget one thing..in earlier times f1 was even more attractive than it is now and that just because that great looking and sounding cars..when you go to an f1 race nowdays you get lots of overtaking, but the cars lost their majesty
Kimi: did you remember when you were a man? when you were a McLaren driver? i mean: a really driver?? now you are earning vast sums of money in a team of shit.
i like kimi...but...cutting the chicanes through the green zones..:) more agressive and higher kerbs at chicanes, and now gravel...is the way, and natural grass.... lol if you compare monza 198x and this one....it is joke.. :)
This guy was the fastest driver at the time bar none. Balls in abundance. If only mclaren had od given him a car he could of been a treble world champion. Sadly missed.
Absolutely. His driving is scarily good here.
0:13 the speed he carries over that kerb! WOW!

He must've felt cozy in that McLaren. Just look at the front end, it's absolutely planted!

The 2018 pole position by Kimi was incredible as well. Lovely throttle control through second lesmo and ascari.

@Joonas' YT Exactly mate.

Kimi's car control was awesome @ 1:02. Many other drivers would have come off the throttle completely.
Supreme driving skill on display here..
Its great to have a ex-F1 driver as a commentator as when he does the grid walk he knows who doesn't want to be bothered and I feel he and the drivers have respect each other.
One of my favourite laps of all time
He took pole from Shumi with at least 3 wheel corrections on the corners. That's why he's a Legend!!!

Scary to think this is now five years ago, only feels like yesterday... That engine sounds great down high speed straights
Five years? You wish!
i heard that kimi used 20800 rpm in that lap, you can hear the engine roaring just before the shift, awesome

Kimi the fastest, Kimi the greatest =>
Those cars felt so quick agile and on the age. In comparison to today's lorries
Believe that! 2009, 2010 and beyond will be his!!!
It was mainly in the extraordinary grip they had from the tyres in 2006; the apex speeds were ridiculously high, thus what they lacked in straight line speed they more than made up for in cornering speed. Especially the Michelin runners.

0:30 kimi destroyed those curbs 😨 thats scary how much speed he carried
"oh peachy.. absolutely lovely exit"
good old kimi, those were the days...
What I find strange about Monza is that on the official FIA circuit chart, Curva Grande - the 90 degree curve between the first and second chicanes is not a corner!!.

You can love or hate Brundle, but you can't argue that the man knows his formula 1!
man how wonderful, would be nice if he come back, btw, he is still king of spa =)
Oh it's way above the current 18k limited. Nice lap!
these days surely were the best when the car could go to 220mph
Absolutely agree.
@ImprovedMexican I think he can still do it I just dont know if he wants to anymore . For us Murray fans we can only wish.
That's largely down to the rev limit, though; compare this video to a 2009 video - in 2009 it sounds like they're short shifting. It really is the V10s that sounded faaaar different, because they were completely different engines.
Brundle wasn't even at the 06 Hungarian GP. Anthony Davidson was filling in for Brundle while he was on holidays.
I am still amazed of his laptime with a v8. Not very slower than the v10.
Better aerodynamics?
I mis those powerfull engines
I agree, the V8's were a big change; but with the rev' limiters? I am just not sure... This V8 sounds great without the rev' limiter!
@ImprovedMexican James allen and Brundle were a good pair. Murray isnt coming back unfortunate.
1:03 Brundle is right, it was scary :S
Ascari is my nightmare in simulators...
@swyer915 he is very good but there is nothing better than the engine voice.. in greece where i live the commentator doesn't speak at live onboards and i prefer that
They're the same engines as they have now, just higher revs. It's the V10s I miss
These were V8s you heard here. In '06, only Toro Rosso had V10 and it had lower revs than the V8s to compensate
@dsafsfa No you're thinking of before 2006.
so true lol
Why has this been posted and not the perfect lap that PrettySchumi did?
CZcams videos should concentrate only on Michael Schumacher and his sexyness.
@jraybay
I know :(
1:21.484? That's a lot faster than today.
v8 isn't that bad as long there is no rev limiter
this engine sounds awesome. there should not be any stupid rev limiter rule imposed.
Yes, but even the V8 of 2006 sound nice compared with the engines we have now.
yes but without rev limit
wrong they used cosworth v10s rev limited
1:30
and they sounded better with the higher rev limit.
lol i remember that
I though Kimi was on pole for the race?
He was.
now weve got 2.4l v8s
when i heard that i thought this must be a joke
its a shame what fia did with the sports with all of their regulations and limitations.

Its a shame Kimi is no longer in F1. IMO he was not happy in F1 after 07. Sick of the politics I think. I bet he is happier in WRC.
btw he did alot of mistakes and the lap was still good
@f10072011
yeah of course, replaced by a boring circuit without any graveltrap and without tifosi!! what kind of formula1 fan you are??
yes but in Ferrari he became a World Champion .. and in McLaren he couldn't finish every race ...
Kimi: did you remember when you were a man? when you were a McLaren driver? i mean: a really driver?? now you are earning vast sums of money in a team of shit.
the announcers in the states dont have this much passion for F1. it sucks

lol if you compare monza 198x and this one....it is joke.. :)
this is the most boring track ever!!!!!!!
they should replace this track with a street circuit
