    I still have 2 Pi 4 at home mainly to play around with Pi Desktop and retro games. Excited to get my hands on a Pi 5 to see what it could do. I think it would be good for you to show the specs and maybe compare it to the Pi 4.
    Don't have the luxury of a 3D printer, so would just get some strong double-sided tape to tape it to a back of the monitor and call it a day :).

    I'm working on a similar arrangement using some old Dell square monitors from work. Those date from 2007 to 2014 when Dell sold a sound bar powered by a 12v jack near the video connectors. I'm going to 3D print a bracket for the PI that locks into the sound bar bracket and gets power from the 12v jack.

      @user-28qhfk65 Před 9 měsíci

      @@jothainwhat is a 1L pc? And I don't think even that can compete with Pi 5's power consumption because Arm processor is very power efficient compared to x86/amd64.
      Edit: though you're right performance and compatibility would be better on x86's pc but the performance of pi 5 shown in video is promising. If the software improves if might be a good choice which it will.
      Edit 2 : I won't recommend those that really need a pc to use this though. A cheap used windows pc or laptop is usable enough for any task like office / school work.

      @@user-28qhfk65 Well something like i5-6500t on Lenovo tiny series pulls about 9W-15's on my server when running Windows 10, Jellyfin, Pi-Hole, Ubuntu server for Docker testing simultaneusly. Maximum powerusage is something like 30W peaks I've seen. So I really, really dare to claim many peoples money is better invested in 1L x64 PC's that sip power on very low amounts, perform superior and can have memory up to 64GB's. I bought my box used for was it 120 euros. About the same as rpi4 kits are now.
      Dont get me wrong. I have a lot of pi's here and there, but it's foolish to use them as desktops, no matter what the model is.

      You can also save energy by washing your clothes by hand instead of in a washing machine. But at what point does the question "How valuable is my time?" kick in?
      If you want to go to extremes, rather than paying £30 for a cinema ticket, popcorn and a coke, just spend a couple of quid at home playing "Cybersplatt 4044" on your 1000W PC with your NVIDIA GTX 9090 RTX FAB AOK GPU and save yourself even more.

    i am just now learning about the raspberrry what it can do. i just got a raspberry 4 pi and didnt realize i needed a micro hdmi. would be nice if the micro hdmi would be a regular size hdmi like back of your monitor without having to get a micro hdmi to hdmi cable adapter. i was excited to start playing with the pi but now i have to wait another day for the adapter to come in. i am a first time user of this. i am a 20 year experienced computer tech and i always try to keep up with technology but sometimes it slips by me. now just learning about the Pi what it can do. i like the fact that it is a small form factor pc you can carry it wherever you go. just need wireless keyboard and mouse to go with it. that will be the next thing i will get once i get familiar with the Pi 4 then move up to the Pi5.

      @terrydaktyllus1320 Před 9 měsíci

      What games are you playing on your "old gaming PC" that you'd like to play on the Pi?
      I assume your gaming PC runs Windows but to get any kind of good results with gaming on the Pi then you need to run Linux. That then means that you need to check if those same games run on Linux - there might be "native" versions written for Linux, or you can have a lot of success installing WINE on Linux which creates a "Windows-like" environment for games to run in, and it does work quite well.
      I think you need to probably do a bit more research, because if it's an old PC anyway then it may not be drawing a lot more power than a Pi would anyway.

    For applications that can use a short HDMI cable I have been using this "Nanosecond Extreme Thin High Speed MICRO HDMI Cable (2.6 ft/0.8 m) - World's thinnest and most flexible MICRO HDMI Cable" on Amazon UK and USA. This cable and others with newer ultra thin cables work fine for 4K video. It is so thin it places no strain on the micro HDMI connector. In the past I have lost the use of the connector on a Pi 4 when using a thick micro HDMI to full size adapter. The cable you used in this video will stress the connector, though perhaps not as much as some.

I've seen videos for overclocking the Raspberry Pi 5, but I'm not sure how video playback looks with the extra clock cycles. I realize that the Orange Pi 5 has more cores, but sometimes if the cycles are faster the computer will run faster at certain tasks of course.

    It's impressive how far home compute has come over that last 40 years. From ~£10000 to under £100 when currency values accounted for (from ~£2500+ to £80 in list prices, then vs now, and not even equivalent computing power)
    Surprised didn't 3d print one of the existing "pi vesa mount case" designs. A case design that slides in/out of a paired vesa mounting bracket would be idea. Would allow for mounting, or removing without messing with screws. Of course not doing, allows for many suggestions, comments. ;)

      @terrydaktyllus1320 Před 9 měsíci +2

      "It's impressive how far home compute has come over that last 40 years."
      I agree absolutely which is why I refuse to adopt the modern gamer mentality of "more is always better" when it comes to CPU cores, CPU cycles, gigabytes of RAM or bigger numbers in your GPU model.
      The first computer I used to connect to the Internet back around 1992-ish was a Commodore Amiga A1200 running at 14 MHz with 8 MB RAM over a dial up modem and running the "iBrowse" web browser - and even that was pleasant to use.
      Today I was building a Thinkpad T22 with a 700 MHz Pentium 3 CPU and 512 MB RAM from about 2002, so 10 years later than the Amiga A1200 but with a CPU that is 50 times as fast and 64 times as much RAM. But most people would throw it in the trash.
      That's why I am happy being a "boomer" with so many years in computing, both work and hobby. I can maintain that "sense of wonder" every time a new and better bit of hardware comes out whilst retaining perspective on what were still considered to be fast computers 20, 30 or even 40 years ago.

    I'm also thinking about it. But the setup will be a bit expensive. Here in Germany 95€ for the Pi 5 with 8GB RAM, 12€ for the power supply, 11€ for the case, for the cooler another 6€, for the mini HDMI to HDMI 5€, and for the 128GB microSD or for a USB stick another 16€. 145€ + delivery. It's not cheaper as a bundle. 150€ so about 162$ for a mini-pc that saves power, but reaches its limits very quickly despite a specially adapted OS, which has no decent way for me to connect my Bose speakers. The Raspberry was originally developed for students and people with little money. For 150€ I can buy 3x old office PCs with an i5-3470S, which is many times more powerful, and use such PCs for another 10 years with Linux Mint.

      I don't think he "sh1t" on anyone, I think it's more the case that to get the investment money to make the Pi in the first place that he needed to prioritise Pi stocks to suppliers under contracts with NDA agreements that don't allow him to talk about them anyway - it's common business practice.
      And, as per my previous main comment here, I think the Pi Foundation have lost direction anyway and the supply problems just meant I was able to find alternative platforms at the same or less cost anyway - I don't need to get all "bitter and twisted" at the Pi Foundation for it, I just don't use Pi's as much as I used to.
      And, no, I don't believe RISC V is the future even though I only use Linux and Open Source software these days anyway. Years ago, we were told ARM would kill off Intel but since then AMD has become a much bigger player in the Intel 64-bit space with Ryzen CPUs - so that never happened either.
      A true engineer should be happy that there are even more options to build solutions on - I will start to include RISC V alongside ARM and Intel going forward when I plan my solutions.

    No matter what is on top of LG's logo, it doesn't change the fact that both of them rely on their own electronics (and they both need each others) to show content on the monitor.

    I'm all for "sharing the love" when it comes to getting a proper adult's OS like Linux onto the desktop but who came up with this idea that the RPi has to be a desktop replacement anyway?
    I think the Pi Foundation has lost its way now and I don't even think they understand what their target audience is any more - they are just churning out upgrades because that is what they are expected to do.
    I don't even feel that the "buzz" around the RPi 5 launch is anything like what was around when the models up to the Pi 4 were launched.
    Me personally, I'd be a lot more interested in a new RPi Zero 2 board that kept the quad core CPU but had additional memory to take it to 1 or 2GB because the tiny form factor is what makes it so versatile.
    Who even talks about maker projects using the GPIO pins on the RPi any more? I love emulation as much as the next guy but that seems to be all the the Pi is aimed at these days anyway.
    And why would you even buy it for a maker project? You are paying £60-£80 for it now where you don't need that amount of CPU power and memory to drive a few peripherals on GPIO pins. And if you are going to do that, then you can pick up a Pico, ESP32 or Arduino clone microcontroller for around £10 - or even a Pi Zero at less than 1/4 the price.
    I see a lot of chatter about "I'll be able to emulate a Dreamcast properly now", for example, but for £60-£80 you've been able to pick up a used SFF PC on eBay with a 3rd or 4th Generation Core i5 or i7 CPU and 8GB RAM in it for ages now, and that's already got more power than a Pi 5 has. If anything, I think that is what a lot of people have been doing anyway during the RPi shortages and I do think that's killed a lot of the buzz for the RPi 5 launch now.
    I like the design of the RPi 5, I couldn't give a toss that the audio jack is gone if it made room for the I/O chip but can I think of a reason to buy one that does anything better for the same price than other alternative platforms that are available? No.
    I think the RPi 5 is fine for people who don't know how to use anything else and who need a fully supported "near consumer level" device where they can just follow step-by-step instructions in tutorials and videos without really having to do any hard work themselves - but then the whole point of the Pi when it launched was to get people to become more computer savvy anyway, so, once again, I think it has "lost its way".

    I will hold out for a mythical 16GB version as that can replace my desktop PC for most tasks. I use a lotttttt of browser tabs. They are memory-hungry.

      So why do you need 16GB RAM for a desktop - Linux will run perfectly fine in 8GB, even 4GB for most tasks.

      @@dwalinfundinson No, you did not.
      That is why I asked the question.
      I can have 30 browser tabs open in Firefox on my home Linux machines and not be using more than 2.5 GB of RAM.
      This is why I am a computer engineer rather than having the mentality of a modern "gamer brat" that thinks more cores, more RAM and a bigger GPU is always better, without understanding why they are needed in the first place.

      I wasn't going to rush to get one but then I got an email from MagPi magazine about an hour ago to tell me that as a subscriber to the magazine, one is being reserved for me as a priority customer to get one of the first ones on release - so I ordered an 8 GB Pi 5, PSU, fan and case for £109, or about $130.
      So you are a bit off with your calculations there, chap.

    Get a mini pc (30 Watts) peak!
    Same price like pi 5 - but with double CPU Power & tripple GPU Power,
    the Pi 5 is an arm chip pc, that‘s you can not run windows system efficiently.
    4K Videos lag a lot on pi 5, this is jocke for the money

      What cpu are you suggesting on this mini PC that has double the cpu power? Can you give me the model and retailer selling it?
      CZcams will automatically block websites links.
      The Pi 5 is $60 for 4GB, power adapter $12 sd card $8 = $80
      The Pi was using 6 watts playing a 1080 video from CZcams. See 5:51. Your suggestion is 5X the power consumption.
      I like mini PC’s. It’s great that we have so many choices these days
