The thing to remember is that if you are helping to prepare for your senior loved ones you should talk with them about what foods they can and cannot eat. If I ate these foods I would likely go into a diabetic coma and then I wouldn't have to worry about what to eat. LOL Thanks for the video because not all seniors are diabetic but I am talking to the people watching this video. Just talk it over with you seniors.

I've had cancer twice and it's impacted my teeth, my hair, etc.. But we've been making jerky for decades. I decided to make hamburger jerky! It's really very kind to my teeth and more economical than buying roasts to dehydrate. I also make granola...not the rock-hard kind, but the nice chewy variety you buy at the store. I just took my cue from the basic ingredients, right down to rice syrup.

I'm in the process of putting together three 24-78 hour go-bags with the essentials to give to give out if something happens! Its nothing glamorous, cheap backpacks from the dollar tree, comprehensive hygiene kits that i made, lighters/flashlights/hand warmers, actively working on little first aid kits and food rations for each one. Gonna finish them off with a few odds and ends like emergency blanket and rain poncho, maybe a cheap multitool, etc.
Its not much, but if one of my siblings, my roommate or even a neighbor is unprepared, it'll give them at least a couple days of comfort and basic needs until either things get better or they can get out of dodge. I think if anyone has like $20-$40 to spare it'd be good to make up some of these both for themselves and their loved ones. And if nothing happens, just donate it to someone in need!

I have a question for you. How the heck are you planning to cook or heat these foods like noodles, oatmeal etc. if you have no gas/electric during a big freeze or whatever the emergencie is???? Everything in fridg is going bad, stove wont work. Maybe gas will as its usually elec that goes first. Barbecue grills will help. As long as your gas canister is full, maybe. Charcoal would be better as long as you have enough and aren't dumb enough to bring it inside
A lot of stuff to consider. Foods like canned soups, canned macaronie products, tuna , chicken, spam. Little 10 oz shelf stable Hormel complets dinners are great. Can be eaten cold. Not greasy at all. They are great. Sardines and crackers. There are lots of things you didnt mention that are excellent. Better then what needs to be cooked. I live in Tx. and we usually get one really bad freeze in Jan or Feb in DFW area. And you'd better be prepared for no elec for week or more. P.S. Im 83, so i know how to take care of myself and what i need. God bless you all.

We have cooked both in our woodburning fireplace and also on our small, charcoal grill, in times without power, including winter snowstorms. It's actually fun to change things up and try something new :) A good cast iron fry pan and pot with lid are great to have! We've also made 'foil pack' meals in the coals of our fireplace, just for fun and something different for the kids. They LOVE it! They call it 'indoor camping' - LOL!

I cooked on a fireplace for a full week without power during a snow/ice storm. Did have a small freezer that we unloaded into coolers & put outside packed in ice & snow. Made stews, chili, thick soups. Always had a stock up of canned veg for winter months, and luckily had cast iron Dutch oven & pans. Cooked eggs, made grilled cheese, made popcorn, hot choc from scratch. You can do more than you think. It wasn’t easy without lights, only had oil lamps & candles then.

Buy Factory Refurbished on line of you want to save money and still have the same warrenties as well as free S&H. No point of having frozen food going bad and being wasted! @mendyviola Před měsícem +2

Use what is appropriate for your diet. There are plenty of low carb/zero sugar options that are shelf stable. Consider Jicama which is as shelf stable as a potato and can be substituted for an apple with the right seasoning. Also look in the Hispanic and Asian sections for dried meets (shrimp, beef, etc). Some whole grains could be appropriate if they are minimally processed with high fiber content. If you can get farm eggs, they don’t need to be refrigerated if they haven’t been processed.

British person here. When the UK left the European Union, the USA tried to negotiate some food export deals with us. Unfortunately (for the US) none of the negotiations were successful. Although the UK had left the EU, we did not lower our food standards regulations and everything the US wanted to export did not meet our food standards. It was either quality (for example raw chicken washed in bleach or produce that was GMO) or the chemical additives. It was a sad situation because the UK government was keen to renew trade links with the US that had to dropped in 1973. Some food comes over on a company by company basis, but it is heavily scrutinised at the border.

Having a good bone broth on hand is big, I think. You can mix that with regular canned veg to make an excellent soup. Having canned milk to add to stew makes it thicker & more nourishing. Keep some canned meat to potentially add to a thick soup will help change up the diet. I also keep some dehydrated fruit (sliced apples, blueberries, strawberries) add water & simmer with a little sweetener & cinnamon for a healthier dessert. Same fruit can be added to oatmeal or cream of wheat.

The list is good except for jerky which difficult for most seniors to chew and digest. Protein powders and meal supplements are a great idea. Seniors also need to have at least two weeks of their medications on hand in case of a storm that keeps roads or their driveway blocked.

Senior citizens usually have problems with their digestion and gut health. Many are probably gluten intolerant while they may have trouble giving up on gluten. Bread and pasta should probably be minimized. Try oatmeal. Rice, potatoes, and corn are high in starch. Seniors may have blood sugar sensitivity.
Nut and Seed flour or powder are probably better than nut butter.
Dehydrated vegetables may be a good option for soups. Many seniors probably would do better with soup for most meals. Dehydrated onions are easy to cook with. Pepper is probably helpful for most.
High salt content should be avoided as much as possible.
For high protein and complete protein try dehydrated eggs, dehydrated buttermilk, and mushrooms.
Pork, Beef, and other Red meats are too heavy on the body.

How difficult is is to pick up a butane stove at a Thrift Store or Yard Sale for less than $10.00? And, buy a few cylinders to go with it? There are lots of alternative methods one can use to heat food besides electricity. Being a Prepper is the very best way of mitigating inflation and shortages. Camping gear can always be used to double for emergencies. It is amazing how many people don't even have enough food and water on hand to last three days, even those on fixed incomes can be frugal and mindful Preppers. I am beyond trying to encourage the delusional who either think an emergency will never happen, or, when it does, 'Big Bird' will swoop down from the sky to rescue them! Crazy!

      @sGodiva-sp7oc Před měsícem +1

@@sjordan7085 That would be a great option unless you live in a condo where using anything except electric operated things are allowed. No charcoal grills, no propane, butane, no kind of camp stoves, nothing with open flames. What I came up with, which doesn't 100% follow the rules are, a bunch of tea lights / sterno cans inside a huge cast iron skillet with a wrought iron grill over it to set pots on. Light up all the tea candles/sterno cans that fit inside that huge cast iron skillet. Place a 5 - 7 quart dutch oven (with lid) or other large container to have hot water for instant coffee, tea, oats, potatoes, etc. plus heating a tea kettle full of water. You'll also need to have a large enough work area that will be safe to place this on, plus couple more cast iron grates to hold the hot water, hot foods on. Not perfect, will be a slow pain in the patootie to use, but workable. Get the super slow burn sterno cans. The can last over 8 hours I believe. All the open flames will be small and easily managed on a stove or table top so as not to be bumped and spill. I will probably heat with sterno cans, move to another surface to keep warm using tea lights. One large dutch oven for table top or stove top surrounded by a trifold stainless steel backsplash to help keep the heat contained since you're using small cans/tea lights to heat with.

But what is objectionable about American food (and highly dangerous for the body) is that it contains far too much sugar, chemical flavor enhancers, and harmful additives that can cause cancer or other diseases.
