I have great memories of the Munich tram system in 1966 which was then way ahead of its time. There were then many more routes, less cars and less population. In 1972, Munich hosted the Olympic Games so transit was overhauled before and since then and Munich now has a wonderful underground train system (tube or subway as British and Americans call them). I am not sure these remaining trams are of much use to the people of Munich except as a way of saying "we too have trams".
I live in Munich and the great thing about the tram is that it can bring you to places the Ubahn doesn't and that would otherwise be a little to far to walk, especially in bad weather. And if there's a major disruption to service in the Ubahn the tram is an alternative because it's faster than the bus
