One of the most haunting TV moments from my childhood where it was just me watching Invader Zim, and Zim just got into a deep fryer and had a guy eat him, and I couldn't stand seeing Zim inside that dude's stomach. Guess I was being smart for once, because I had unknowingly avoided *V O R E .*

As I mentioned elsewhere, I love how sincere Miss Bitters sounds when she says "alright" after that.
There are SO many more of these throughout the show. My favorite one has to be this scene where Zim and Dib are yelling to each other from across the street. Apparently, the animators were planning on adding traffic in the road between them, but when Jhonen Vasquez heard the audio without the traffic noises, he thought it was hilarious as is. He was SO right. Seriously, the lines from this show are the most quotable things in the universe.

Honestly some of the jokes written on this show are on par with early Simpsons type writing or other mature material. It's always something stupid being said, but said so casual or over the top that it's near impossible to not find funny.

I find it interesting that for 2 season 27 episodes, the show has definitely a major impact on 2000's youth culture, part of that is probably because it technically ran from 2001 to 2006 iirc. with reruns still airing for years afterwards. so it ended up being brief but also spread out. making it feel like it lasted longer than it did

This is probably my favorite episode. It was both terrifying and exciting. When I saw Riddley Scott's "Alien" years later, I understood the Zim's homage.

Ring Around The Rosie was a song made by kids a long time ago. Many years ago (idk. I'm not exact) it was declared that dancing was illegal. So kids made that song as an excuse, to where if they were questioned, they would say "we were just playing."
I'm not sure if this is true, but this is what I've heard.
Not surprised now given that the creator’s comic was called, *Johnny, the Homicidal Maniac* and how gruesome that was.
The only surprise was Nick deciding to give him a show in the first place.

The reason some people freak out so much when they see certain organs, is because they're supposed to be inside you. If you see an organ, that usually means something is very, very wrong.
Also, the reason some people get queasy, or feel pain, when watching someone else get hurt, is because our brains often have a hard time distinguishing the difference between it happening to you, or someone else
Put that together and you get; seeing an organ makes your brain think it came from you, and that you're probably dying
Oh! So that's why I smile when I see one.

Well, considering the alternative was the creator’s other work ‘Johnny the Homicidal Maniac’... this probably looked tame by comparison.
Yeah, considering Johnny tortures several people for small inconveniences towards him and attempts suicide several times _in the first issue_
I'm one of the few who don't like that comic. Maybe because I'm "too old" or I can't relate like I might have in my teens/twenties (most of the fanbase seems to be in that range). But it just seemed dark for the sake of being dark. There was some thought provoking dialogue, but it never went anywhere. You never really got to know Nny very well. He was mentally disturbed and lonely, that's about it. I wanted to get to know him and figure out what makes him tick, but that never happened. It was just torture, crazy, torture, crazy, torture, crazy, gore, gore, gore, rinse and repeat. There wasn't much of a story. Hell, as someone who loves psychology, exploring the mind of the mentally disturbed is fascinating. But Jhonen never fleshed out his characters, and that's even true for Invader Zim. They're definitely fleshed out more than his other comic characters, but that's setting the bar low.
Even though I've loved IZ from the day it was released on Nick, it's almost odd watching it when you know the guy behind it all isn't the most... agreeable human being.
For the Record his 2 issue comic "I feel Sick" may be his greatest single work. I literally seized up laughing. When I found out that the guy who made THAT was doing a kids show, I knew the 21st Century was going to be an age of madness..
@@jfridy It gets even weirder when you find out his comic Squee - is why the Nick admins talked to him. They looked at the comic about the poor tortured kid with abusive parents and the anti-christ - and go "yea lets give him a show"
I first encountered Invader Zim while walking by a Hot Topic and seeing an IZ poster in their window, and I had to stop and look at it because the art style was familiar but I couldn't place it until a couple minutes later. I realized that it was the art style of the guy behind the 90's underground comic Johnny the Homicidal Manic, and then I saw the Nickelodeon logo. At that point I had to wonder if everyone at Nickelodeon had gone completely insane, but I also knew I had to check the show out. I was not disappointed.
That's a hilarious story! I can't imagine my first encounter with a kids show, being an out of context image that is clearly by an artist NOT for kids.
If you know jhonen Vasquez, he actually wrote some dark stuff before Zim and is the creator and did the designs. Not too shocking if you known him longer.

Also due to how gruesome the show is I suppose most parents would avoid putting the tv on while the show is airing.
I think the show spiked in popularity when the show came back around 2011 to release a few more episodes

@Sardonicus That's an entirely fair opinion. I definitely thought GIR was funnier when I was 10 than now, and as an adult I think most of my love for him is nostalgia. Gaz is the best part of the show, lbr.
"Lol random" humor I think works best when there is a more straightly played character to react to the randomness. And that is what the relationship between gir and zim was for the most part. The humor is less that gir is random and more zim's frustration towards gir's randomness.

That's the episode where Zim makes a "best friend" but gets tired of the kid bugging him so he invites his "friend" over and replaces his eyeballs with a device that will make him become best friends with the next thing he sees, which happens to be a squirrel that attacks him. You know, for kids!
@@Rainygirl3100 Jhonen wanted the kid to actually die from being attacked by the squirrel but Nickelodeon producers refused to have any death on the show. Dib was supposed to be killed at some point as well according to Jhonen's plot and be replaced by another "antagonist". It's funny though how he circumvented the anti-murder policy in this episode by replacing the nurse receptionist's brain with a toy. You know even as a kid that she died because she lost her fucking brain, but she continues functioning as if she's lobotomized.

"Hot Topic celebrity" is right. I found my Dib shirt completely by accident when digging through a basket of uncategorized folded clothes. Either the employees didn't know it was an Invader Zim shirt even though the show's logo was in plain view on the back, or they hid it away to make more room for Gir stuff.
The latter is more likely.

I always laughed at the fact that the nurse was fine with Zim having like five sets of lungs and three hearts 🤣 Even as a kid watching the episode, I was like "Woman, that's not normal"
If Zim actually knew what the intestines are for, I highly doubt he would have voluntarily put them in his mouth.
This episode scared me so much as a kid that I never watched any more of the show. Now I’m rewatching it and I love it.
For any other show, Dark Harvest would be considered the "Weird Episode."
For Invader Zim, it's a typical episode.
Ehhh, yeah. Basically. The rubber piggy episode was a lot more intense, but not as gross.

@@karateparty100 Zim uses a time machine to mess with Dib's past and actually succeeds in killing him. We even see him flatline, meaning he dies _right on screen._ Despite what happens next, that was too much for some people, especially the kids watching.

The tallest actually had it as a mystery planet on a piece of paper at the edge of the digital map they were using and they told zim that it's an important mission only for him
If I remember right they knew a planet was there, but weren't sure of the details and didn't care about it so they sent Zim in the general direction and hoped he couldn't find it and/or it wasn't real.

Funny thing is that I actually almost passed out during anatomy lab when I had to handle a cow heart. My lab partners were so sweet, they let me lay my head down on the table while they figured it out, letting me copy the answers.
Fuck, I'm so glad I'm never gonna see organs in my feild.
This episode is the most disturbing Nickelodeon moment involving organs followed by the SpongeBob episode "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy IV" where SpongeBob accidentally shrunk everyone and they went inside him to destroy his organs but he was able to fix the problem by shrinking himself and the entire city before they got to the point of killing him. I'm surprised this doesn't get brought up more when it comes to disturbing moments in SpongeBob (the episode itself is remembered more for the Wumbo joke), and this was surprisingly from the pre-movie era.
That Spongebob episode made me hate the show even more than I already did.
