I have rosacea without breakouts but have the flushing, stinging cheeks, broken blood vessels. Interestingly the biggest trigger of mine seems to be fluorescent lights (which all my doctors find bizarre) and also going from cold outdoors to heat indoors. I’m so mad, but glad, because after years of frustration, i was on vacation and the only thing i could find to clean my face was noxema, and now my skin is healing. I stopped using it when i got home and the rosacea returned, i resumed it and it stopped again. So my routine now is to use a mild soap face wash in AM, then before my usual afternoon shower i rub noxema on my face, let it sit a few minutes, jump in shower and use a gentle wash cloth and semi warm water to brush it off my face. Then I follow with a gentle soap in the shower cause it seems to leave some kind of residue, not in an entirely bad way, im just not used to it so i wash it off. After i dry off after shower i take a cotton pad and Aesops green tea toner and gently brush across face. Sometimes I’ll put a serum but if i do i be sure to rinse off before bedtime with just water and pat dry my face. I still have a few broken blood vessels but the overall splotchiness and red aggravation is gone. I think i just had clogged pores and the usual effoliators were too abrasive. Noxema is perfect

That sucks. Sorry to hear that but understand that the meanness is immaturity and ignorance. People like that aren’t worth getting upset over. You don’t need or want approval from anyone like that. They’ll cause havoc and pain to everyone around them so stay clear. It takes a ton of work for mean people to change so most never change. That’s their problem, not yours.
Check out the new mini-series ‘Under the Bridge’ if you want to understand how mean people can cause havoc, pain and worse. Surround yourself with people who are only smart and kind (have lots of common sense, like to learn, though no one’s perfect…we make lots of mistakes when young and as adults) if you want to be happy. Focus on who and what makes you happy and give mean people your strong boundaries. Being happy helps us stay healthy including our skin. Being truly and honestly smart, kind, healthy and happy will make you much more attractive than any mean person no matter how pretty they might look on the outside. All the best. ❤

Yes, lasers next please: I've had rosacea all my life (especially on my cheeks). I remember in school people would ask if I was wearing blush!!! Anyway, regular sessions of IPL over the past years have helped keep it in check, and I only get flare ups very occasionally now. Big no nos are: staying in the sun (I can't stand it though), overheated rooms, wearing a face mask in the heat, and wind burn (I ski with a face cover whatever the temperature is).... It's high maintenance but you gotta do what you gotta do. I remember some of my past flare ups intensely, they sting for days, and I would get pangs of anxiety from it, which made it worse ofc....

Hi Dr Shereene I developed rosacea during perimenopause and had some real difficulties with it initially. I've never had the pimples, but I did notice textural changes to the nose and cheeks (bumpy textured skin). Azelaic acid and centella are both staples for me, but retinoids really helped with the textural changes. I worked up to alternating evenings of tretinoin and azelaic acid, which kept it under control for a couple of years. Last year the flares worsened (stress lol) and I had to put the tretinoin aside and go down to a retinaldehyde. My skin has calmed down a lot and I'm going back onto tretinoin in September. I'm Scottish with fitzpatrick one skin, my mum has rosacea and I'm a fairly classic case. I had to remove all fragrance from my skincare, as my skin will not tolerate it at all - even in a cleanser. I also occasionally get eye infections/irritation and use drops as required. The damaged blood vessels are an issue, even when the rosacea itself is very calmed down. I use green colour correctors under makeup to disguise them, as I can't afford laser. Here in the UK it's VERY expensive. My best advice is to keep skincare simple whilst in the throes of a flare, as the stinging from skincare can be very unpleasant. Simple aqueous cream in a thick layer can be used as a gentle cleanse (when even your normal gentle cleanser stings), a gentle moisturiser and a gentle mineral spf - that's it. Once the skin calms down I go back to my treatments and normal skincare.
I don't consume alcohol (due to meds for my severe arthritis), I don't eat spicy foods, I never sunbathe and the only trigger mentioned I indulge in a bit of chocolate occasionally. Life has to be lived though and a bit of chocolate is one of life's little pleasures I'm not ready to give up. Best wishes.

Right now I only use a cleanser for sensitive skin, an anti redness moisturizer and of course sunscreen. SVR sensifine Ar works wonders on rosacea skin, I used other products but this one is a win, at least for me. I stay away from exfoliating my skin with harsh products and I find out that using a cotton with micellaire water helps to smooth the texture of my face without irritating it, I use this technique once on a while.

Side note: I love your jacket/shirt combo!. Your open discussion of this topic is very much appreciated. Thank you for sharing these more accessible options for self treatment. My derm prescribed me Metrogel, as well as a course of oral antibiotics for a particularly bad flare up of rosacea. After that, I found good success and stability with a very gentle cleanser, and Dr. Jart's Cicapair cream. In my case, I've found that sun exposure also def does not help, so a good, mineral sunscreen is also essential. Born and raised in New Zealand, and being of English and Irish ancestry, I remember vividly several of my great aunts suffering greatly from this, in a generation where such topics were not that widely discussed, nor recognized. There also just weren't that many products available, because of geography and technology. However, they all maintained very simple skincare and makeup routines, which I think helped them to be able to better cope with their condition. They also gave sunscreen to me for birthdays and holidays, which, in hindsight, probably saved my skin, to a large degree.

Dairy product can be a trigger. Cows milk and cheese for instance. Increase of omega 3 will decrease inflamation and ik can help to calm down Rosasea. I know this from experience. You need to try it for two months at least if it helps to calm down your skin. Of course this comes along with proper skin care.

I just came back from my physician who diagnosed me with mild rosacea. I would have never guessed it because I'm 24 but listening to this it was actually really obvious. Sunlight and chocolate really trigger flare-ups. My dad has eczema and has these tiny blood vessels visible on his face, my aunt instantly breaks out when drinking alcohol. It took my derm 2,5 seconds for a first suspision and 3 questions for a definitive diagnosis. I also have the blood vessels on the top of cheeks, I get bumpy red flushes on my whole face, with the exception of my eyes and next to my mouth. It's like I have a red sheetmask on. I also have the flaky skin around my eyebrows. I currently have a prescription for metronidazol creme, but I will definitely look into the azeleic acid! Thanks for this video!

Didn’t dawn on me that my life long red face was an actual condition.
Born in and used to live in the Deep South and would spend 10 out of 12 months bright red in the face any time I went outside in the heat, exerted myself, took a shower…. And even when I’m not bright red I’m still continuously pink. It’s calmed down some since moving to Maine, but not completely.
Weirdly, you call it “adult acne” but the red started when I was eleven-ish and started to pale up significantly (swore off sun after a serious sunburn during band practice that caused fevers and blisters, to the point that I was considered the “weird one” for wearing long sleeves during the summer and even on the beach. It was… a formative experience). Can’t say whether I have “flairs“ or not as it never seems to go away. Even now.
Been binging your content and just blew up my credit card on some of your suggestions. Thank you so much for all you do.

At 53 with skin type one, I’d say the causes for me are genetics, age and hormones, diet and triggers.
I never had any signs until 32 but the occasional use of topical and oral medication together would easily clear it up for many years when I had a flare up usually after a night out of wearing makeup and drinking alcohol. At about 50, perimenopause brought my rosacea on strongly where medications kept it at bay but has never cleared it right up and I cannot wear any makeup on my nose (no matter the kind) or drink alcohol without a stronger flare up.
I have other triggers but makeup and alcohol are the worst and 100% guarantee for a strong flare up. Alcohol also causes instant migraines for me so I just don’t drink it and happy not to.
Having a good skin routine, decent diet, healthy lifestyle, and being educated about rosacea is vital.

Another superb video from a true bright light...and that's you! I have concluded that Rosacea has a variety of causes, but the common thread is systemic inflammation. For me, I developed rosacea immediately following a course of Cipro antibiotics and an acutely stressful chapter in life. Here I am 14 years later finally sorting out the gut dysbiosis that ensued from that and other eras since then. Quite simply, a lack of beneficial bacteria in the gut results in an overgrowth of non-beneficial bacteria, such an e-coli. The good news is that this is a relatively easy fix. And I cannot stress enough the importance of a healthy diet, as that dramatically reduces the severity of rosacea. That's my nerd snippet. Thank you for fighting the good fight and being a physician for the people!

I have only used the one from The Ordinary but oh my god... pustules vanished overnight, redness went down by 75%+ and my skin adjusted to it immediately. It also worked similar to a BHA and exfoliated my skin without causing a flare up and clears my hormonal acne when I get a breakout! Would like to try other brands but the acid itself is incredible and I highly recommend to anyone struggling with rosacea!

She also said it's genetic for me because my family has a spectrum of skin conditions. Also gave me clindamycin. I don't avoid any of the triggers. I can't avoid heat because I have Fibromyalgia.

Dermatica seems like life long cream just like all others.
Just like to keep our skin clean we use soap or use cream to keep it moisterized . Same way rosache cream looks like long time use.

Noxema is perfect.

My insurance won’t pay for Azelaic Acod til I use metro for a month. A hassle I know but the MetroCream made a HUGE difference in my redness and breakouts. Funny story I went to the Derm at age 55 for a skin lesion on my nose that popped up out of Nowhere 😮!!! Upon the biopsy she noticed my face and said I have rosacea. Prescribed the Rx. Who knew 🤷‍♀️ !! All these years I’ve been using acne products and it was rosacea 😮. Ps my biopsy turned out NOT to be skin cancer. It was a Lichen Planis 😅 a whole other skin issue. As a POC I hate having Rosacea as no one believes me thinking or assuming it’s a tan. NO! Not even doctors. Tried to get it diagnosed “early on”, been really bad lately with flare ups, I have type 1-2, instead I was just given Soolantra cream, which I’m not even sire helps after starting using it. Some say it look worse before it hets better, others just say it made their Rosacea and break out worse… I’m a certified MUA so I know enough about skincare and my own skin to know it’s Rosacea, which was a result of contact dermatitis and a broken skin barrier due to doo much too soon of actives, and AHA/BHA, Retinol etc. Thanks the Ordinary and Kbeauty. Already had sensitive skin. Never had an issue with acne. Not even as a teen. Now it’s Rosacea mixed with fungal acne aka Malassezia Folliculitis. But recently being diagnosed with diabetes type 2, I found out that diabetes is somewhat linked to both fungal acne and also Rosacea. I live in Norway and Avene has the only moisturizer I can use that doesn’t break me out, yet squalane isn’t moisturizing enough during winter. I can’t use Centella Asiatica due to grass pollen allergy and it just makes it worse. Same goes for Niacinamide, oat, vitamin C, aloe vera, green tea, which all breaks me out. I’ve used Azelaic acid. Did nothing for me. Just made it worse. And I can’t do laser due to having face tattoos (forehead and chin), cultural tattoos as I’m indigenous.

I probably wash for 2 full minutes now with the Thylox and that's made a MAJOR difference. No more bumps, pustules or bleeding. Then about a year ago I began drastically lowering carbs as well. Not keto but just low-carb. I really avoid sugar [not hard at all ]and starchy carbs [very hard] of all kinds [total carbs in a single day now less than 60]. That seemed to reduce the remaining redness a lot [at least my family thinks so].
