    For my money, this album is just about as good as anything Maiden has done. Roy Z is a killer producer, and this album sounds so dark and heavy. That band was killer - everything about it... definitely a unique gem. One of my top albums of all time, and particularly the song Book of Thel, which is one of my all-time fav metal songs. Great job on the solo here - I love when you take the time to explain the how and why... it's really helping me gain a better understanding of what makes this music so effing good. Cheers!

    In case they have not yet done so, the band itself should show some sort of acknowledgement for your loyalty, study and concern about Iron Maiden musicians, songs, and history.

    Amazing album, amazing song, and amazing job on your part as always. 👏👏👌
    I'd love to hear your opinion and analysis on Reach out. I feel like Maiden should write more songs where Bruce and Adrian sing together (and not just backing vocals from H). I think it would be awesome.
    Also, if you'd consider doing Psycho Motel's With you again whit Dave I'd be so happy and grateful. That's such a beautiful song.
    And if I maybe so bold I'd also like to hear your opinion about and hear you play some Whitespirit and any of Janick's Gillan stuff one day.

While I absolutely love it on a personal level, I don't know if it would be universally well received on a Maiden album 🤔
      I actually covered that With You Again solo some 3 years ago on Instagram... I didn't even have this channel yet! But I might revisit it at some point as it's a great moment in their history for so many reasons 😊

    @OldGuitarMan Před 10 měsíci +1

    Adrian was a great counterpoint to Roy Z's shredding style, just as Adrian has always been the perfect counterpoint to Dave's looser, more Ritchie Blackmore-styled solos.
    I remember an old interview where either Steve or Dave was saying Adrian had to learn to be a lead player when he joined Iron Maiden, that he wasn't really in that role with Urchin. I dunno, personally, since I don't know anything about Urchin - other than I think I saw a video with Adrian playing rhythm and singing lead vocals.
    However, if true, it does maybe explain how Adrian developed such a structured, vocal-styled lead technique.
    In the late 90s sometime, when Adrian was in Bruce's band, Bruce once said that he didn't think Adrian had ever played a note he hadn't planned out in advance 😄. But again, that's why his style compliments someone like Dave Murray so well, a guy who does a fair bit of improvising.

    • @LicksOfTheBeast
      @LicksOfTheBeast  Před 10 měsíci +2

      Oh I agree 100%!! Being a vocalist and having that mindset is definitely one of Adrian's strong points. He was also able to develop a pretty good technical level fairly quickly (some of those early licks could be deceptively tricky!) and of course being able to pick things up from whomever he may be working with, be it Murray, Roy Z, or Kotzen, just keeps him growing as a player!

    • @OldGuitarMan
      @OldGuitarMan Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@LicksOfTheBeast Definitely. Sometimes we, as players, don’t realize how tricky something is until we actually try to learn and play it.
      Of course, the Iron Maiden guys could’ve been referring more to Adrian’s then-new role as a featured dual lead “guitar hero” player vs what he’d been in Urchin - not necessarily meaning that Adrian had to “learn” how to play leads when he joined IM. ✌🏻

    • @LicksOfTheBeast
      @LicksOfTheBeast  Před 10 měsíci +2

      I think Steve meant that lead playing didn't come to him as naturally as it did for someone like Dave, who could just play over anything without even having to think about it - and actually come out with some really cool lines!
      Adrian needed to think about things more, but the results were already pretty impressive! I always point to his solo in Killers as an early example of how creative he could be in his lead playing. That is not at all an easy rhythm to solo over, yet he pulled off this really memorable solo that fits so perfectly with that part!

    • @OldGuitarMan
      @OldGuitarMan Před 10 měsíci

      @@LicksOfTheBeast Did you ever see/read the Adrian interview from many years ago where he talked about Roy Z watching him play in Bruce's band? And Roy told Adrian, "You have terrible technique." And Adrian replied with something like, "Whoa, now, wait a minute here..." 😄
      But what Adrain was describing in the interview was complimentary to Roy, how in their time together he learned some of the more modern metal playstyles from Z, particularly the all-picked shred stuff, I think.
      To Adrian's credit, however, he didn't let it define or change him going forward from there. He didn't attempt to become a shred guy. It was just another tool in his box that was (and is) used very sparingly, like that last picked run in The Wicker Man solo.
