- When it comes to at home golf greens, many homeowners are looking to install them in their yards now. This is a fad that’s been going around the last couple years, but if your going to a real USGA style green, it’s intense. There is lots of mowing, sanding, leveling, fertilizing, watering, etc. this doesn’t really take into consideration if you’re just going to transform a portion you’re back and cut it shorter that’s gonna be different than this this is going to actual USGA standards. Make sure you listen to what he has to say and hear about the different aspects of it then go ahead and leave a comment in the comments down below about what you think or if you have questions leave them down there as well.
This was all brought to you by @Lawncology John Perry.

Agree 100% I’ve managed golf courses my entire life. From the inside, the guy who pays the bills. To do it right:
Water EVERY DAY
Mow EVERY DAY
Deep time aerate and topdress EVERY MONTH
Stay on top of weeds CONSTANLY
Stay on top of disease CONSTANLY
Watch for invasion of poa annua CONSTANTLY, and even then it can’t be avoided.
The cost of proper fertilizer and chemicals is ASTRONOMICAL.
For folks that want to try it, I admire your courage, but question your judgement. 😃
Not knocking you guys at all, I love your channels and am learning a ton from you about how to properly maintain my lawn, at about 4”. 😃
Cheers Brothers! 👍
Says it all ☝🏻 thank you sir!
First honest CZcams video I have ever seen on any topic , ever.
lol 💯
Maintenance and all the special TLC products is very time consuming and costly. JP speaking the exact truth not just to putting greens but low cut in general.
💯
That’s like when I built a backyard 40ft x 60ft ice rink for my kids to play hockey. My kids were under 8 years old and I can’t tell you how many nights I was watering the rink at 2am. I miss those days.
You’ve gotta pay to play and work for excellence, for those passions we have. 💯
@@TheGreenerLawn just found your channel and I am glad I did.
I grew up In the countryside two hours from north of Toronto. The farmer up the road sold his land and they built a golf course (late 1970’s). So I learnt to love golfing.
Now as I volunteer at an retirement village (being a retired school teacher myself). I don’t live there but want to keep busy and help out people I knew beforehand. They have a 200ft by 60ft oval path that used to be a putting green back in the 80’s. But because it was not kept up it is just grass and common weeds. It has a banked height of 3-4 ft and the walking path is 6 ft wide (presently gravel)
I will be looking to transform it back into a chip’n put green over the next two summers. I will be looking forward to more information from your videos, past & future, as to some steps to take.
My volunteering is due to boredom and wanting to help. Plus older retirement folks know a lot about raised garden beds and what to grow, when and how. I think it will be an even trade. My initial budget will be 5K and my time. I will have use of many tools from the residents.
It’s also my own cash. Am I crazy, yes. But I need a hobby and I can’t “Wrestle” with my athletes anymore.
Good day sir.
@@CoachTMAC once a coach always a helper of others… makes sense.
It’s a process, and most people don’t have to take it to usga standards to have a some chipping / butting green. Depending on how much time and effort you want to dedicate, you could go as simply as mowing the existing grass down (with out level correcting) and playing it as it is, all the way to usga standards dig out of soil (18+ inches down), bringing in soil, and redoing the whole playing surface / grass type.
I’m here to help ya, feel free to email for direct help info@diygrasscare.com
@@TheGreenerLawn thanks. I will be meeting them in late March to create the plan. Snow would be gone for six more weeks, so expect an email. 👍👍
Awesome! I can’t wait to help and see what you create for them!
Great job Jeremy
Thx Eric! Much appreciated!

Yes he does! How you been this winter, how is your lawn coming out of winter?
@@TheGreenerLawn Its so good, I don't dare to post.
@@dennispage5333 I need it in my life, mine is garbage.
How about having a bentgrass on the lawn but mowing it a bit higher? Would that still be this painfull?
Lower the more level and mowing, work etc. the longer you allow it to grow, this will lessen the issues faced, at about .75-1” is where everything becomes super tedious, but John is pushing this out to 3/32” is his goal of height.
First Aussie 😁. John keeping it real as usual. 😎
Good Friday morning Trevor. Finally had a nice warm and Sunny day today. The birds were happy and still have the ghost lawn. How are things looking your way for the weekend and Happy Mothers Day to your wife and family this Sunday.
Striperman, Raining here , rained most of the night ,much needed. Thanks for the well wishes for my wife and family . The birds are still chirping here and fluttering around in the large puddles of water on my back lawn. 😎
💯 how he rolls for the first Aussie, nothing but the best.
If ive heard the hairless cat/golf green analogy once...ive heard it 1000x.
1001 at least right! 😂
I thought about getting a green at one point.. but the time and effort to care for it is non existent at the moment. Maybe someday well down the line tho
Smart move Andy! Your keeping it real!
Golf greens take serious time/money Commitments. I’ll save the money for rounds of golf.
Lol 💯 💚
Like a hairless cat. 😂😂😂
This isn’t what you think… reason I showed what he meant 🫣
First before Brett
I can attest to this!
A backyard putting green to USGA standard is unnecessary. But if you got the time and money go for it.
Lots of things are but people can do as they please, right? 🤷🏼♂️
I did it for 1/20 the cost. That said, my response is still the same 🌝
Lol doesn’t change the care requirements, commitments, etc.I get it sir!
My bent is coming in and almost full
Yeah cutting it everyday sucks kind of
@@natenissan1339 if you have the time…. Then there is some enjoyment for it… but if not or you got other things going… it can be a pain. Lol I get it!
I can attest to everything John said. His green is on another level from mine, but the principles are the same.
But still, it’s a lot of work and commitment! I can attest to this! For both of you! What’s your HOC?
@@TheGreenerLawn mine is at .2” currently
Effort = results..... I like golf, I do not like golfers.
Good I don’t golf… I’d be that guy!
agreed not worth it with all the upkeep when is there time to truly enjoy it . thanks
💯
Can I buy your Hudson star ?? Il take that off ur hands lol
He laughed
Dude must have a nasty short game though. He’s talking shit so no one else does this lol
Lol now that you mention it 🤣

It’s more cost effective to do artificial grass with a sand of about $2k and enjoy it! Do it smarter next time!
🤮 we will tell USGA u said so, so when they change we will change 🫡 deal?
I don't have the money, time, a back yard or play golf so its a no for me. Great video though and John's honesty is priceless. 👍💚🦸
Yea, 💯, I’d never do this. I’d mow low, but maybe .75” is my jam…. But that’s not this year..
Yes
