Salvaged tiny homestudios: tin can siding, paper bag wallpaper

  • On a standard-sized lot in Portland, Oregon, self-taught builders Jeff and Brad built two tiny cottages using mostly salvaged materials. Each home is 364 square feet and with gabled roofs and front porches match the Victorian and Craftsman homes of the neighborhood until you look closely.
    Tomato sauce cans from the local pizza shop became siding. A neighbor's old chimney became a brick foundation. A porch swing was crafted from a Dairy Queen bench. Window boxes from salvaged vent hoods. Rain chains from olive oil cans. Inside, wallpaper is old flour sacks and paper shopping bags (with their labels exposed). Terra-cotta roof tiles are sconces for lights.
    Phoenix lives in one of the cottages with her 20-something son Christopher. They share the 364 square feet comfortably, even managing to fit in space for Phoenix's yoga practice and her sons' art studio (in sitting-room only loft). Despite the at times cramped quarters, Phoenix feels much more comfortable here than in her previous home that was nearly 10 times the size.

    Great thinking outside the box! During the depression my grandmother used big cardboard boxes to finish out the interior walls of the unfinished bedroom. People today have lost that mentality, of use what you have.

      My grandma had dresses made of feed sacks, they were so pretty back then, she even made drapes and tea towels out of them too. I still have one of the tea towels and it's a treasure. All manner of good fortune to all who read these words, cool as heck tiny cabins too!

    the sad part about this is that you can build many many houses with the waste of building projects.

    I love the tin can cladding!! Also enjoying all the coverings on the inside walls. This speaks to me in sooo many ways. I've always known we could be using alternative materials for almost everything, example: paper sacks, onion & potato bags, dogfood bags, lg flour sacks, tin cans, boxes, rope, yarn etc. Creativity & needs can determine what we do or who we are, right? AMAZING!!!!

    While I love Tiny houses and these are wonderful, the Tiny Home movement is not just about creativity.. but about also giving people better life choices and more options, get over the 'Oh no, there making them cookie cutter.. nuuuu!' ok? People need homes, homeless need homes.. and if we can slap out a few dozen a month just so people can have a roof over their head, A-freaking-men to that.

      I dont see anyone slapping a few together helping people that need affordable living. People who rent are living pay check to pay check because RENT has more than doubled and along with utilities makes it impossible to save. Some of the tiny houses I have seen they want more than the normal sized houses. To help homeless and people struggling, a decent size would be nice and yes, it would be wonderful to see communities coming together to help the housing issues in every state.

      I would love to get a piece of land and build a tiny house for my daughter and myself. I would build a big covered porch on the back and hang out in it when we watched tv, ate dinner, and had friends and family there.☺️☺️☺️😍😍😍

      Gyva02 Actually, zoning restrictions are less about collecting money, and more about ensuring property values of those who already own homes in that area. Considering homes are usually a person/family's largest investment, they are important to protect that investment from the actions of others.

    @argophontes Před 10 lety +186

    I like it, but I'm not a fan of the derisiveness at the beginning. This movement isn't about 'creativity', it's about realizing that humans don't really need 1800 square feet to live comfortably. There's no need to be negative about other people's way of achieving that goal.

    • @sm3296

    • @gadblatz4841
      @gadblatz4841 Před 4 lety +7

      I think for a lot of folks that is creative thinking. Many people have a hard time stepping outside their percieved needs. And I think the comment about creativity is about a push to opening one's mind, looking for different perspectives. Cookie cutter, consumerist environmental or social change will not, in my opinion, have much of a measurable effect. The change needs to be a mental one, not just moving into a smaller house, rented for an inflated price because it's kitschy, in a neighborhood that's suffering from increasing costs of living etc etc blah blah blah.

    • @MarySanchez-qk3hp
      @MarySanchez-qk3hp Před 4 lety +11

      Argophontes: I'm reminded of something Gandhi said about feeding the world, but it could just as well be applied to housing: he said (paraphrased) that there was enough food to end world hunger, but not enough to safisfy people's greed.

      @talllala Před 4 lety +4

      But I do think the point is that it ruins the original intent. It's like standard housing and how it's become nothing but an investment vehicle or how 'eco-housing' has gradually morphed to become a top of the range elite house with modern interiors 'But we have solar panels on the roof and wood from a sustainable forest in Germany' never mind the air miles involved. The original idea becomes corrupted, stream lined and mainstream and far more expensive so that it eventually becomes inaccesible to the target demographic. In a few years time these cookie cutter tiny homes will resell at unaffordable prices.

    I was immediately repelled by the woman saying what the movement is about, when it is really just what she values about the movement. Others might like to downsize without needing the "individuality". Also, it was weird for her to decry the cookie-cutter sameness of a production line, in front of two "unique" homes with architecturally identical facades.

      No, the movement is about creativity. A lot of it is trying to get away from consumerism, and the buy-buy-buy, sell-sell-sell. a lot of people make their own tiny homes, and many of them try using recyclable materials. Your wolfsdengaming Its not a assumption it's fact. No one who endorses in the consumerism, "bigger is better" , more, more, more, lifestyle would consider this home. In fact, for the vast majority of people, no one has ever heard of a tiny house. It's not assumptions, it's the truth.

    • @Yourwolfsdengaming
      @Yourwolfsdengaming Před 9 lety +7

      oh then bother quoting the part where this person distinctly says there for consumerism (or anything for that matter you may have trouble finding that your claiming this person is for) when did this " I think you're just offended because you probably endorse in the lifestyle she's criticizing in which case, it's not anyone's problem. " turn into "It's not assumptions, it's the truth." last I checked, 'I think' implies an assumption that one's making because they don't have all the answers, so I would love to know how your thoughts turned into concrete rules and truths. The 'movement' is wanting to live how ever someone wants to without outside restriction that may not or shouldn't apply to them in the same way that you shouldn't punish a whole class for what one student does wrong or may do wrong. Your argument doesn't work because it can't be applied validly or in reverse I.E 'jimmy is creative, tiny house movement is about creativity, there for jimmy lives in a tiny house'

It would be awesome for you to recognise his need for a small amount of independence as well as a place that reflects his individuality. Those are very darling Tiny homes next to each other... I like the designs as I do love the whole Victorian era everything... I think the idea of the tin cans on the exterior is excellent... so many great ideas were incorporated here... I would love a home using many of those elements... but much larger.... :) For me, my studio alone needs to be much bigger... but I love tiny houses.

    Great Art work! Excellent! Like the fold down tables, the pop up floor, and the painting canvas.I was looking at, only for window coverings. But, wallcovering, good idea. I have painted them for floorcloths, takes many layers of paint, but I do love them. The canvas drop cloths have doubled in price since I had it on my wish list, sadly. I love small dwellings. I bought an acre in WV to do a project,using shipping containers for a small dwelling. wish I could wish myself there-

    The champagne caddy reminds me of traditional japanese homes; they always have that little trapdoor in the kitchen and sometimes the storage space below is so big that is is the size of a room. Sometimes they incorporate a small one into the newly built, and it is just enough for a few bottles or jars.

      I think that's a big problem. Finding land to put it on. Zoning often prohibits putting one on land in town and even in outlying, rural, areas. Other people who hook up to the sewer etc are not very happy about seeing others get away with "camping" on an adjacent lot. Disposing of human waste, even composted, is frowned upon. Not taking sides but, I can understand both sides. I have an empty lot next to me. I don't want someone camping next door. It is a form of camping so, have to be confined to an area where camping is allowed. Having said that, I've said before that, the zoning laws should be changed for an area to allow these but then, it would become a mobile home park, wouldn't it? If you don't want any controls on it and, believe that the government just wants your money, what do you do? Where do you put it? It's fun to see all these cute places being built but, not much is said about where they are put. I'd like to see more about what the owners have to go through to find a place for them and how the neighbors and others react. I have a dream too but no luck in finding a place for it. Now I'm thinking of getting a van or a class B in order to be able to park it legally. Even those people have to skulk around to stay over night somewhere. If they pay to go to a park, it ends up costing a lot. You have to pay every night or by the week or month and then you're in a place with a lot of other people. Not like a home, or my idea of a little home, I guess. The dream is still a work in progress.

    I love these tiny homes! I could totally live this way. I really like the design of this one. I think I would devise a way of putting a platform across the window seat and buy the thick foam you can have cut to size for a more comfortable second bed. I take it these folks own both of these tiny homes and possibly rent one out? Terrific idea! I was also wondering if they used a table in the window seat.? I would, then have it transform into a guest bed plus the loft for another bed for company. I'm really excited about doing this! Terrific way to own a home without the home owning you!

    I think there is a happy medium between tiny house an huge American house. You can live a "normal" life in a smallish home that is 1500 square feet with a big family. I grew up in 1200 square feet and a family of 4. I now have 3 kids (all pretty much adults) and we live in a 1800 square foot home. We don't need it to be larger and are fine. We certainly don't need it to be "tiny". It just is normal. I think people love the novelty of going to extremes, and I don't think that is good common sense. Just use what you need, and don't strive for tiny or massive.

      Scorpio Moon that's awesome. Our home is currently an early 1950's two bedroom at approximately 750 sq ft. It suits our family (2 adults, 2 kids, 2 dogs) quite perfectly. Five years ago we sold our 1800 sq ft home in a larger city and worried about downsizing, but it's honestly been quite perfect for us. Our friends all have much larger homes and they all just seem so.......cluttered.
