In this video I’m going to tell you which companies pay the most money for entry level software engineers going all way up to principal software engineers. At the end of the video I’ll give my overall recommendation for the best companies to work for if income is important to you. We have a lot to go over in this video, so I’m going to cut the intro short so we can get right into it.

    Didn’t realize Stripe compensates their employees so well, I’ll need to look into them more, thanks for the insight Cody! Also I know product management has been something that gets conversations going in terms of good paying jobs in tech. Not sure if that’s out of the scope of content you want to share, but I think it would be interesting to see what you find out!

      But WLB at Stripe is bad and RSU are evaluated every year

    • @CodyEngelCodes

      Haven't looked into the WLB at Stripe, will have to keep that in mind when I cover the company in more depth.
      And thanks for the suggestion Jordan! Product Management isn't totally out of scope for this channel, but I haven't found a way to fit it in quite yet. The PM space is interesting to me though so hopefully one of these days.

So, this is so timely considering I just left university and considering my next route. Also, there is nobody else more perfect for this CZcams niche. You exude facts. Graduated in 2020 and have been struggling finding an entry level position. Thankfully i've been getting a lot more bites since december so I think the job market is coming back. I understood that with the pandemic and downsizing, companies didn't have the money/resources to "invest" in entry level engineers and expected them to be at a career-level already. I hope that now I'll have a better chance and landing something around market avg (~70k)

  • @oliverwheatley1378
    @oliverwheatley1378 Před 2 lety +7

    Something this doesn’t mention is that a high % of those figures is paid in stock. Even though Apple, Google, Amazon ect might not be dominating those figures, their stocks are significantly more stable than many of the other companies. Meaning ur salary will grow consistently. Thats not to say the other companies have bad stock tho, and some of the companies that are still growing rapidly may even see higher stock gains however they will be more volatile.

    i want to add that some of the lower rent that you're including in the cities aren't exactly for good apartments.. for example, the $1k apartment in seattle is in a crime ridden neighborhood. thanks for the video!

    • @CodyEngelCodes
      @CodyEngelCodes  Před 2 lety +2

      Yep, I wanted to include the lowest rent I could find on apartments.com, I wasn't really controlling for whether or not someone would want to live there (because who knows, maybe they would). Good call out though.

      20 is still really young, there are folks becoming software engineers in their late 20s and early 30s. Starting out with IT is a good route, I've seen folks transition from IT to software engineer after being with a company for a few years.

    • @CodyEngelCodes
      @CodyEngelCodes  Před 2 lety

      Yeah, although it could be a bit of a process. What I've seen to work the best is to find a company that will support getting a workers visa. I don't know the specifics but eventually they were able to get jobs with companies that weren't sponsoring work visas. With that said, many of the companies on this list should be able to sponsor visas.

    Can you talk about work life balance and on-call production support as a dev? I would love to go make more money. But I’m worried that I’ll get thrown into a demanding project that’s gonna require me to drop whatever I’m doing outside of work, to go fix a production issue. I don’t want to be a company slave carrying my laptop around everywhere.

    • @CodyEngelCodes
      @CodyEngelCodes  Před 2 lety

      My thumbnails aren't that great, especially for the work-life balance video, here's a link to the work life balance video: czcams.com/video/yCHPPiPZzps/video.html
      I'm hesitant to great a video dedicated to on-call production support, just because I have no idea how I'd make a compelling title or thumbnail for that. For topics like that it's usually better to join the discord group and tag me in a message in our general channel and I'd be happy to share more thoughts/have a convo.

    Great video. Interesting that 2 sigma was on the list and Jane Street was not.

    • @CodyEngelCodes
      @CodyEngelCodes  Před 2 lety +1

      Jane Street pays really well too, the main issue is they don't have enough data points. There are some entry level engineers making $400,000 per year, but how likely is it that you would make that as a new grad?
      Two Sigma has more data points and it's a little easier to make that claim with a higher degree of confidence. Nonetheless though, Jane Street pays well similar to other HFTs.

    Sir how about doing remote job for these companies. Are they paying the same amount of salary ??

    • @CodyEngelCodes

      Most companies will base salary on location, so lower cost of living areas would earn less. That said, some companies will baseline to one location and pay the same regardless of location.
