  • Its finally cold enough in Florida to break out the Aladdin mantle lamp. Sadly the old wick has gone foul so I had to clean the whole unit out. Ive decided to use this opportunity to demo a with replacement before doing a demo of the operation of the lamp.

Very well made units mine is a S681U Equator II. Easy to change wick just rotate Counter-clockwise until tab up from latch then pull knob out to release wick holder collapse wick inwardly from pins reverse with new wick. It took me 2 tries to adjust wick height corectly 3/8inch exposed when fully to right knob (3X wick number)

Thank you for the video! I apparently had a spiked flame that went yellow and sooted my mantle. Got that cleared out with help of gas stove to clear a good portion of the mantle. Whilst waiting shipment of a wick trimmer, I used a single edge razor to trim flat across the wick. Nice even flame now. Very even mantle illumination. No “runaway” behavior. Well illustrated here, not well illustrated in other’s videos.

It also does a good job of heating a room too.

I inherited an oil lamp (patent date of 1905. Original Empire glass chimney)... originally purchased by my great grandfather. I disassembled, cleaned all parts and replaced the wick. It was thought-provoking, when I removed the old wick that had probably been installed a century ago. That old lamp burns almost as bright as my two late model Aladdin mantle lamps. Coleman white gas or kerosene lanterns are fine for outdoors, but generate too much carbon monoxide to be used safely indoors. Thank The Lord for western civilization.

Weve evaluated with our equipment given a good burn, CO levels and found little to no trace. Your mileage may vary. detectors are cheap.

Thanks for having showed us the inside of wick mechanics of this lamp, very much.
It's a paraffin/kerosene lamp or an alchol model?
What is the smoke trail at the 8:08 minute and following ones?

Nice video. Just wondering if charring the new wick would be better. Also missing the whole explanation of the mantle. Yours appears
    to be used.

    Just
purchased my first Aladdin lamp. Completely ruined the mantle and did some
damage to the wick. Got a new mantle and got a new wick but the flame is not symmetrical. In some
spots there is almost no flame and in others quite a large flame. Lamp runs but
at low power and I get dark spots on the mantle if I turn it up much at all. Your
    help would be appreciated. Thanks

what type of fuel are you running? Did you get a wick cutter or trim your wick perfectly? If you cant get a halo, dont bother putting a mantle on top of it.

There is a special tool to bring the very end of the wick even, I use a razor, I recommend using the tool

Ok, Nice video but cutting the wick is unnecessary. You are shortening the life of the wick. You don't extinguish the flame by turning the wick below the Outer Wick Tube, you simply reduce the flame and gently blow down the chimney.
As other people have pointed out there is a charing procedure and Aladdin wick trimmer tool that is used to get the right shape.
    Have a great day.
