      Traditional Japanese houses are not well insulated, Tatami mats provide some insulation on the floor. Traditional Japanese furniture also often relies on people sitting on the floor, which tatami mats provide comfort in padding. It's much more comfortable sitting on a tatami mat than a hard wood floor.

      @@GGigabiteMthank you for that answer. Their culture is a lot more floor centric than ours in the West. We have never worn our shoes in the house because my parents spent time in Japan and brought that back with them. Now as an adult my sister and I continue that and we prefer to have our family meals at our lower table. We both are squatters even in our older ages now thanks to our parents really soaking in this beautiful practice.
