Man, where were you 5 years ago when I had to learn how to TD (and buy a real production switcher) completely on my own 4 years ago? This is basic, but great and very accurate. Now the proud owner (well, operator & engineer) of a Ross Acuity - the big board in this video. It's amazing!

This is awesome! The first video on live broadcast production switchers I've seen that was actually well made and not overly complicated.
Even though I work with switchers everyday (I'm a TD), I think it'd be great to see one explaining the workflow of a TD, and the overall workflow of a broadcast production.
For example, all of the many many things that happen when a Sports director says "ready Red, roll Red effect to Red" and the sheer amount of people those commands involves.

Great video. As a 35 year seasoned broadcast engineer myself, this demonstrates my skepticism about doing live production in the cloud. You are going to feed all your broadcast grade cameras into a virtual switcher in the cloud? How much bandwidth will that take? How do you control this virtual switcher in real time? A mouse?

Spare MEs can be used for what ever you want really. I’ve mainly used them to prebuilt effects for later recall during a programme.
For example when I worked at Sky News in the UK it was set up like this:
ME1 - fed the video wall and had various effects saved to allow to feed video boxes and graphics in the wall depending on what programme was being broadcast.
ME2 - mainly used for 2 and 3 way boxes when interviewing non studio (“down the line”) guests.
ME3 - again used for boxes etc and also the where our in to break sequences ran - usually comprised of a video box and graphics to tease what’s coming up after the break - something that may use different video and graphics feed each time.
We also had hundreds of prebuilt effects saved to allow the TD, or Vision Mixer as they’re correctly called in the UK, to instantly be able to have anything need for the particular programme.
We’d also use MEs 2 and 3 to build things during a programme that weren’t predefined or new because of breaking news - eg sticking a reporter in a box over a map.
That’s a basic overview but any other questions feel free to ask!

Great Video Man! I Just Have A Question: I Have Always Wondered If A Production Switcher Is Used Only For Switching Between Cameras, How TV Stations Manage To Play Video Files Through
The Production Switcher? Keep It Up!

    • @BroadcastBuddyTV
      @BroadcastBuddyTV  Před 4 lety +2

      Greetings!
Production switchers can be use to switch between any compatible video source connected to it. This could be cameras, video servers, computers, etc.
There are however some switchers that (in addition) have built in media players (as internal sources) that can be selected on the bus and played out. Depending on the switcher, depends on how this function works and what type of video files it supports - and even if it can pass audio as well. :)

Point of order: almost nobody calls it the "background" bus, even when they're setting up an upstream key on it -- it's the Program bus.
Cause if it's not, then Preset is generally not "preset" either -- on upstream M/E's, it's traditionally *not* been a flip-flop mix. Though perhaps Carbonite does it that way... ;-)

Please make a video on how to use a tri-level sync signal between a new ross switcher, and an old one . .
Here is the possible issue I face :
We have a carbonite ultra 60 switcher, and an older ross carbonite switcher. The cameras connected to the carbonite 60 are in sync with switcher without the reference signal fed to the ccu units of the respective cameras,,and the switcher gets the external reference signal from a SPG by leader company. but when the HD-sdi out puts of the same cameras are accessed through the older switcher we experience reference issue with black stripes appearing in the camera sources, and the older switcher gets the same black out -PAL-M from spg. All the cameras output hd sdi signal .,and the spg sends out black out PAL M . IS IT MANDATORY FOR THE HD SIGNAL TO ONLY USE TRI LEVELSYNC !!? hd sdi can use black burst as a reference signal as well ,
