imagine sitting at a stop light and looking at some guy on a motorcycle gesturing randomly right next to you.
i always wonder that. it's the same for looking at people who vlog in the gym, at restaurants, stores, parks, w/e
It's understandable for most since they see cameras and stuffs. But I'll always be weird when they start doing jerking off motion
I was thinking the same thing lol
I might start making gestures like that at stops just to see the reactions I get. Without all the cameras and stuff.
meh Some people do it while they're on the phone too so I never think too much of it.
i recommend to touch the brake of the backwheel slightly so the red light shows the other ppl behind you that you slow down
Yep, that's how i do it too. Helps give the driver behind a couple seconds of advance warning that you're slowing down. Sometimes i even give the brake lever a few light taps to flash my brake light before actually slowing down so other drivers can notice it sooner.
Front brake should enable it too
i have an box wired to my ecu and it activates the brake light, if i have more than 50% throttle position and close the throttle. Does basically the same thing you do, but automaticly.
I have a "smart brake module" wired into my brake light. My brake light begins flashing when it senses deceleration. Then solid when I'm on the brakes.
I have been doing rev matching when I am going fast and needed a quick response on gearing down aggressively. Rev matching is also a wise choice gearing it up especially up slopes and in jams. Saved my hide a few times to evasively avoid accidents. I do engine braking too especially a slow stop on the red light, behind cars or going down slopes. Depends on your riding style.

Glad to see I'm not the only one working past a medical issue Yammie. 14 years ago, I lost the front half of my left foot (Diabetes and an infection), and have ridden ever since, after a skin graft and healing up, with an orthotic insert, with a prosthetic toe pad, on a carbon fiber base, in my left boot.
to anyone who reads this that is going through a challenge, no matter how small, you have a choice. you can let it define you, or you can choose to defy it. Keep riding, and stay in the wind!
Appreciate your words of strength man...never give up and keep moving forward bro💯
You are doing great mate! Amen to that!!
Type 1 diabetic and im still riding a bike
I hope you're doing well, my guy!
I envy you my moto bro, inspiring asf this made my day 🙂
Sounds like riding a motorcycle is like learning to play an instrument. In the beginning you're uncoordinated and sound horrible, but with practice you start to sound pleasant and become more comfortable with more challenging techniques. Like using 3rd position on the violin or playing while singing.
It doesn't sound any more complicated that learning to drive a car with a manual transmission.
Then again, I don't own a bike...yet.
So true in the beginning my bike sounded awful now its smooth as hell. Well most of the time it is, rev matching is a work in progress but ill get there. Its a learning curve that never ends and i love to ride more every mile i ride
Jason, yes, it is a lot like playing an instrument. I've thought about this comparison many times before.
That's exactly what it's like. Except your instrument doesn't make sound, but motion.
@Taelor Wiles WHAT?! WHAT WAS THAT? I CAN'T HEAR YOU
Jokes aside, yeah, should've said the primary aim being motion instead of sound or something more precise like that. My bad.
rev matching break-down:
4 steps
1 clutch in
2 gear down
3 rev
4 clutch out
If it is too difficult thinking about the four steps happening super fast, try splitting it in the middle. Clutch in and gear down. you can coast along clutch in without issue. This gives you time to focus on the rev matching and letting the clutch go again :)
Thanks for the clarification he mixed up his explanation on 7:50 when he said that rev goes first before gear down as to what he said on 3:15
Something not learned yet, my mind is thinking that you would increase throttle for higher gear and decrease throttle for a lower gear. If you blip the throttle seems the opposite would happen, btw I'm ok with counter steering. Will experiment with this rev match. Own a HD could help I guess.
Even though this comment is 2 yrs old, I am just starting out on a bike and I guess I can’t seem to overthink downshifting but this comment helped. Thanks
do we need to full clutch in or just half clutch?

Little tip. If a car is riding close behind you and you are about to slow down via engine braking, tap you brake lightly 2 or 3 times to flash your rear brake light. That will give them a warning you are slowing down so they don't rear-end you.
This is the first really comprehensive guide for rev matching and engine braking I’ve seen on CZcams. Every other video just says “do it like this” and does a horrible job of demonstrating it and explaining it. Good job yammie!
This was my first too . It popped-up in my recomendations .
well, he explained the concept, but not at all how to actually do it
"do it like this" is much better than telling a gossip I'm sorry a story....I can't see any logic in this "rev matching" honestly....and the word "engine break".....I probably believe in ACCELERATION and DECELERATION...like what's the user's manual is telling us....
As a manual transmission lover that's new to bikes, I'm amazed at how quickly these bikes can slam through gears.
LMAO, the whole idea is to NOT SLAM through the gears, how many times did you hear him use the word smooth in his vids!
@@sfzx54 you need to interpret things less literally.
yea almost in high gear once we get pass the signal lights when showing off😄
@@tannerhawes6890 you obviously missed the LMAO precursor to the comment, it was in jest, perhaps you are the one reading to literally! All four of these motions need to happen so close together that there is almost a non perceptible time between actions. It just takes practice and muscle memory which is why practice is necessary. Most folks comment on how imperceptible my shifts and gear changes are when they ride as pillion with me. But I've been practicing this for over 50 years.
By the way, Rev matching with a damn good exhaust sounds like heaven... Plus a little break firing.... Bliss...

Dude, this video was really informative. I'm a female rider and I've been riding for 3 seasons now. I have always wondered how to do Rev Match. It sounds really cool and pro when other riders do, but I just got to know about the benefits of doing it by watching your video.
I think you had a really good balance between the technical and practical explanation. It does look very easy...but I am sure i'm gonna have a hard time to master it. The motorbike season just started here in Norway, so I have plenty of time to practise that skill.
Thanks for making such a great explanatory video. I like your stuff.
I honestly love that your rev match is so aggressive as a new rider because it helps me see very exactly when and how to rev match. There are a lot of videos where it is difficult to follow their movements but you made it so easy to learn! Thanks for the video!
Got my bike 2 days ago and was just letting out the clutch slowly while downshifting without rev matching. Now this video comes along, need to start practising this soon
MrGamingHorse what kind bike you got?
@@lancekippenbrock5307 it's a 2004 suzuki gs500f
It's definitely worth doing. Before I did it, I once locked my rear tire in a turn which wasn't that nice. With rev matching this would have never happened.
@@henryh3643 you don't know the precise revs to hit in order to keep the bike stable through a turn, there's so many variables, you should pick your gear and speed before entering the turn unless you're an aspiring racer and I'm pretty sure even they don't change gears unless they're very early in a turn or the bike is on the way back up
@@schr4nz well, at least form what I know. Race cars with rwd have the same problem. If they would downshift in turnes without rev matching, they would spin out in the most turns. If the driver is talented, he can heel and toe (manually rev matching in cars) or his car does it by itself. The car COULD calculate the exact engine speed so that it would fit 100%, but they don't do it. Just because reving a bit higher than needed but not applying throttle while engaging is also working perfectly fine. And I can tell you since I'm rev matching I never had problems with slipping tires because I shifted in a turn (no matter if you should do it or not)
I love how I’m like wow I really want to know how to rev match because I’m getting my first motorcycle, boom new video lol great timing
I just got my Triumph tt600 for my first bike after the MSF course and I'm loving it so far.
My first bike is going to be an older Kawasaki Ninja 650, I take my msf course in a month or two
you have to rev match & downshift properly because at high speeds you can lock up the back tire and it's dangerous even with abs going from fast to slower too quickly can cause a whiplash effect. Use the brakes to slow down before rev matching/downshifting
Saaaaaammmmeeee
I tried to do rev matching on my honda shine ( it's not effective as doing on high cc bike) whenever I do it sometime the bike switches off or kinda like backfires
You are the best teacher on here.. literally have watched about 30 videos and you’ve made it the most clear. With multiple examples. Also perfect visual and explanations . Thanks man !!
Thanks Papa Yam! Now after years of riding I know what rev matching is and can start learning it. Great video, way better than any others I've seen. I've always just let the clutch out gradually and never had any issues.
This was definitely the best and most accurate description of rev matching your downshifts I have seen, before I had a bike this was always an intimidating topic because nobody explained it very well but this video was fantastic. Keep up the good work papa.
I have my first motorcycle lesson in two weeks, I feel super prepared because of your videos.
Keep it up Papa Yam
pepperlook If you haven’t already check out Motojitsu’s channel. Very well made and informative. Good luck, have fun and be safe.
Thanks Yammie Noob, first time watching you, good job. I think the most important point you made was that rev matching puts your engine at the appropriate RPM for the speed you are traveling which makes it easier to accelerate. This is especially important if you need to get out of a dangerous situation. Thanks and keep it up.
I never knew that this was a procedure to do. I taught it myself through all my years of motorcycle riding.
VRK taught myself in my car and just seemed like the natural thing to do on the bike 😂
@@shadowvilln711 haha.. yeah
Engine braking : Happening every time you let go of the throttle. Fuel and air injection stop, so a vaccum is created in the cylinder. It slows down the pistons, and so it slow down the bike/car.
About rev matching : Main goal is to avoid locking the rear wheel. On wet road or in cold conditions, anything with two cylinders or less, and bigger than 600cc will instantly lock the back wheel if you apply too much sudden engine braking by not rev matching ! This is mandatory on some bikes !
Sorry bud, but there's a lot wrong with this description of engine braking... fuel and spark are cut therefore the engine no longer has a power stroke due to lack of an ignition event. The load on the engine i.e. weight of the bike transmitted from the wheel through the gearbox and clutch back to the crank is what slows the motor and the bike. The vacuum in the cylinders and air intake have nothing to do with it, as long as the the engine is rotating there is a vacuum.
@@drew9041 no haha what, Anton is right. Your description makes no sense
@@jonkexx my apologies if it was over your head
@@drew9041 the vacuum in the manifold when the throttle closes is what makes the engine slow down.
@@jonkexx its not vacuum its as @drewbot R1 said, but has to do a bit more with timing, air compression. yes fuel and spark are limited to just enough to keep the engine running (ie: one or two cyl and none in the rest) then the timing kicks in and holds the exhaust port closed for a longer period of time. building pressure in the cyl from the piston compressing the air. then releases it at the last moment. when you throttle off the wheels are already spinning pushing the force back through your transmission, and into the engine. if the engine had no engine braking your car/bike would essentially be in neutral. by adding the air compression it gives the engine some resistance from spinning over. thus all the way back into the tires.

brake to slow down first, then rev match. First downshift normally to see where the rpms are at for that gear, then that's the number you have to rev match too
Ive been doing this all my life on my dirtbike and never knew what it was. After i heard you riding and actually doing it, i understand now

@Yammie Noob I dont usually watch your vids, but I can say I really appreciate your fluid explanation of rev matching. It was extremely helpful.😁
Rev matching through a corner while being smooth is the best feeling needless to say it’s dangerous
I am pretty new to riding again after 20 years away from it, and I have always just done the engine brake thing naturally. I am always worried though that drivers behind me won't know I am slowing down because they don't see brake lights. so I always feel the need to lightly add braking as well, even if I'd rather not really do it. Getting better at the rev matching. :)
By far the best rev match tut I've watched!
Yammie I just love your videos, yes it's important to learn how to match the engine speed and transmission speed its very helpful and a must when going down hill on a curvy roads.
"I'm so used to rev matching that my brain just stopped working actually" - So used to doing the right thing that you need to think hard to do it wrong !!
This is the biggest problem I was having in MSF way back when and the instructor never told me what I was doing wrong, it really stressed me out and I never felt comfortable enough when the weekend was over to get my own bike even with the certification
Aw man, I've been doing it wrong all these time, so, thanks Papa Yam, your explanation is crystal clear.
Hi there, I get my new bike(used) tomorrow ,its my first motorbike ,its a Suzuki Yamaha sr 125cc ,thank you for your video, that rev matching, I did t know what rev matching was, however, over the years,a motorbike might fly past,I've just happened to hear this skillful revving noise,as it's coming to the lights,I could just tell, they were loving there passion with there machine & that was exactly what you've just been teaching "WOW"
"Rev matching" what an Awesome sound,I've subscribed & thank you for your fab teaching, keep safe & enjoy friend🙂🙂
its really important to note that rev matching should be done by someone with enough experience on a particular bike to have throttle control built into muscle memory. if you overload the revs on a down shift its essentially like popping the clutch to rip a wooly. also, the concept is: match the rpm to a given speed for a particular gear. anyone driving a standard transmission car will understand... Finally, it's really important to note that engine braking does not take precedence over using you brake. its a luxury and testament to your skills, but things happen quick... pull in the clutch and hit the breaks if things get tense.
I've never rev matched ever, in a car ( i don't own a bike yet) I usually break by letting off throttle clutch in and breakI lower the gears as needed... and if I'm coming to a stop I put it into 1st or N when I stop.
Thanks Yammie
Now I know how to shift on my bike
Just started rideing and was shifting down and it would lurch, I didn't know this was that important. Thank you!!
Duuude. I'm a new rider and this is exactly what I needed. Learned a! lot. Thanks
seee papa Yammie can get serious too! when he's teaching us!
Coming from a stick shift car, I can do this pretty well. What's messing me up is the throttle response making it over rev-match.
I've been wanting a motorcycle for so damn long!
Watching your videos just makes me want one far more, and I already feel comfortable to try and ride one. Can't wait! AAHHH!!
I get my first bike like one month and I drove it for like 3 weeks cause the weather was bad, but I never knew about rev matching. I always let go slowly the clutch after downshifting and after using the rear brake to slow down a bit, thinking that it was the right thing to do, but thanks to you, now I know how to downshift correctly. I only have to practice to make it become "automatic". So thanks again😁😁
It's the same feeling when you learn to "heel and toe" in a car, it's satisfying, but at first it's kind of scary, and sound more complicated than it is !
So the order of actions goes like this? Please correct me if I am wrong.
1.Squeeze clutch
2.Close Throttle
3.Shift
4.Blip
5.Release Clutch + Open Throttle
All in a fast fluid manner as it seems.
Been riding for years. Now I finally get it. Thanks Yammie
Papa Yam, I've been watching your vids for a few months now. I have never been on a bike before and have seriously wanted to ride, I'm in the market for a Ninja 400 in the near future and have looked up tons and tons of vids from other Tubers, but your videos are the best I have watched so far. Really in depth explanations with everything and it helped me really "feel" what it would be like for riding. Common mistakes to look out for, Fears to overcome, helpful tips, instructions on braking such as this video, etc. etc.. Keep up the Great Work.

you can downshift without clutching too, it's a little bit more tricky and unforgiving, but double the fun. Just click down a gear as you blip the throttle at the exact same time, takes a while to learn and it's different on different rpm's so there's a learning curve. but it's worth it.
it's good trick for a super sport bikes.
It's a bit harsh on a cruiser bike.
@@themountainman491 fair enough. Never tried it on anything but sportsbikes, oh and my big ol bmw touring bike, but the bmw r1100rt is rumored to be a sportsbike in tourings-clothing so there is that...
@@themountainman491 Yea as long as it feels smooth and clicks easy it also does no harm whatsoever

Its the same principle as the unsyncronized trains in older dump trucks and semis where you match revs with the gear in the transmission, cool video really informative thanks
Thanks for the helpful video. As a new rider it is something that I need to work on to be safe and avoid any trouble on the road.
3:21 I'm sportin those same kicks. All about the three stripes!
I'll need to give it a try. Personally I think I've kinda taught myself to "catch" the lower gear higher revs with a bit of throttle. instead of "blipping" the gas and dunking the clutch, I guess I kind of gas it a bit and release the clutch into the lower gear if that makes sence. Been riding for 18 years now, never burned or trashed a clutch, and never had the rear wheel lock up on me or become unstable. I just ease into the lower gear, even while riding hard it's automatic actually. But I'll give it a go I guess.
That is perfectly fine. Just a matter of preference. But when you start doing it perfectly everytime, i think you will find every excuse to downshift with revmatch, because it feels and sounds nice
This is the best video on rev matching! Thank you so much!

Started off on a dirtbike when I was a lot younger and man did I stall the crap out of that thing lol. Overtime, got the hang of it and now just got into motorcycles. It's a small change of transition because your typically going smoother and faster on a motorcycle. Rev matching is also similar and different in its own way based on bike characteristics. Overall, I think its always great to start off on a cheap bike because you will make mistakes, learn your way up, then invest into something you really desire. Great video!

I'm a new rider but I drive a semi and I have found myself doing this instinctively. That's how you downshift in a truck. By the way. Love your channel. I've learned quite a bit. Thanks !
Can you do a “how to: trail braking”? Liking the instructional stuff put into layman’s terms.
That would involve him riding fast... Something yam does not do well
Trail breaking is easy but a slight mistake can send you sliding off the road. Essentially, you've probably noticed how the front of the bike sinks when you are breaking, how it comes back up when you let go of the break and how the bike sinks a bit at the rear while cornering. The point of trail breaking is essentially to extend your breaking into the curve and make all this "lift front", "steady", "sink back" motion happen harmoniously. The beginner's hazard here is if you start turning before releasing enough of the front break to prevent it from going off. Also, you don't have to try this at high speeds. Something like 40km/h is enough to notice if you are on the correct path.
11:31 palm-finger shifts🤩
This is not only a simple video. This is a masterclass. Wow! Amazing content, sir
I just watched your video. I’ve been wanting to learn how to do that on my Ducati and still don’t. I think it sounds so cool when you rev match. Hope I learn that soon. Thank you!
Can you do slow mo in particular section of your video when you are rev matching
Why not just put the playback speed to slow mo in the youtube settings
I don't know any riders that do rev matching, most of them never heard of it, when your coming to a stop and you ease up on the gas ,and use the brakes or clutch if your stop is more sudden ,the bike slows down automatically so you are going slower for the next downshift so the engine braking is not abrupt anyway, I have never rev matched and had no mechanical problems
Well! With Rev matched downshifts, you slow down much quicker than what you are doing, while being extremely smooth at it.
Smoother braking, less clutch wear, quicker engine braking to use in combination with the brakes=generally better slowing down
Best down shifting video until now! Good job buddy
I have been riding for a month and was doing this, now I know what to call it. Thank you
I've been riding for less than 2 months. I'm still learning but rev-matching is proving to be difficult. 3 out of 4 times, when I try downshifting and blipping the throttle, I quickly lurch forward. Usually happens when I'm in 4th gear going down to 3rd (usually going 35 mph and 5000rpm. I think my right hand is still blipping too much.
that's a problem with timing. you're either blipping your throttle too late or too early.
I'm on my first 100 miles still. Every time I downshift it lurches unless i give it some rpms before.releasing the clutch. I have a lot to learn still. I hear ppl talk about downshifting to pass ppl. When I downshift it's like a hard engine brake lol
Edit: ahhhhhh...it's because I don't give it any RPMs when downshifting is when I bog down. This video helps it makes sense. Rev matching. Ok
Update: this video helped so much. So now I know how to properly downshift and rev match. And I understand downshifting for more torque to accelerate faster to pass ppl. 308 miles experience now
@@dunkcards7901 I’m just now starting to learn. Is this the correct order? Let off throttle, clutch in, blip, switch gear down, throttle up and let off clutch?
@@rhadetre I believe it's roll off the throttle, squeeze in the clutch, blip the throttle, downshift, then release the clutch, after you can apply throttle

I've always heard about engine braking but at the low speeds at the msf beginner course I never got to try it out. Good to see an explanation. When I get my bike I'll have to try it out in a parking lot
This Bike sounds so freaking awesome! How is this even possible!? As it sounds so lame with stock exhaust. I'n my opinion this gives the ducatisti a hard time soundwise :D
CP2 engine. Similar to the CP3 of the mt-09 or the CP4 of the R1 and mt-10. Cross-plane goodness.
Sounds even better with an akro ti
There’s just one little thing I don’t understand, everybody says when you downshift don’t let out the clutch super fast or else the bike will jerk and thats not good. Yet when you’re down shifting in the video you pull the clutch in and out in like less than a second 🤔
When blipping, you let the clutch out quickly from what I gather.
Ya dude it depends on how you are downshifting. Letting it out slowly is great when you are letting your RPM match with the gear you just shifted to. If you are rev matching you don’t need to let the clutch out slowly because the gear is now matching the RPM and the bike won’t be throwing itself forwards due to poor shifting
The whole thing should take less than a second, If your try to let the clutch out slowly the revs will drop down and when the clutch engages the momentum of the bike will rev the engine the bike will jerk.
It's like car, only when u are in 1'st and 2'nd u let it out slow, others gears you can do fast :)
Man, as a new rider this has changed my whole way of riding!!!
