How To Remove Or Replace A Shower Head Flow Restrictor To Increase Water Pressure

  • Is your shower head water pressure too low and would love a high pressure shower? Or maybe your water output is too high and you want to lower it to save money?
    Either way, you're probably dealing with a flow restrictor in your shower head.
    Here's the Hand Held Shower Head Set we're using:
    Available on our website: bit.ly/3PZzhTt
    or on Amazon: amzn.to/46yZmiF
    Good news! There's an easy solution to these problems. In just a few steps you can remove or replace that flow restrictor. Flow restrictors dictate the GPM (Gallons Per Minute) of water when you are showering. The higher the GPM, the higher the pressure. And vice versa.
    There are 3 ways you can use this information to get the results you want:
    1. Completely remove your flow restrictor. (Uses the most water. **Please do this at your own risk. We are not condoning the removal of flow restrictors.**)
    2. Replace your low flow restrictor with a medium flow one. (Good balance of water pressure and conservation.)
    3. Replace your high flow restrictor with a low flow one. (Saves you the most water.)
    Whether you have a fixed, rain or hand held shower head, the steps are pretty much the same. You'll be looking for a little plastic piece inside the shower head threads or holder, which is all that's standing between high pressure shower and a low flow shower.
    In this video, I'm going to show you the easiest way to remove a flow restrictor. We'll be demonstrating how to do this with a HammerHead Showers Hand Held Shower Head (where the water saver is inside the shower head holder) and on a Waterpik multi function shower head (where the water saver is inside the threads of the shower head).
    All you need to remove your flow restrictor is:
    Option 1
    - Utility knife or Flathead Screwdriver
    Option 2
    - 2 Inch Screw
    - Screwdriver (Power drill preferred)
    The HammerHead Showers Hand Held Shower Head Set includes a 2.5 Gallons Per Minute flow restrictor. By removing this water saver, you'll have upwards of 4 GPMs. The Waterpik shower head is pretty much the same.
    Just make sure that after you remove the flow restrictor, you reinstall any rubber washers that you may have taken out to access the flow restrictor. It's also a good idea to apply a healthy amount of thread seal tape to the shower arm pipe before reinstalling to prevent any leaks.
    If you would rather replace the restrictor than just remove it, you can follow the steps in the video too. Once the old restrictor is out, you'll slide the new restrictor and put a rubber washer back in to help seal it all. Here are 3 flow restrictors you can find on Amazon:
    1.75 GPM: amzn.to/3tgbeYB
    2.5 GPM: amzn.to/3PXBvDM
    Let’s jump in and take a look at how quickly you can resolve what ever issue faces you with regards to flow restrictors.

    I wish you were showing this close up. However, following along it forced me to look at all of the parts on the shower head and hose, thereby making it possible to push the flow restrictor down inside the shower hose. Once that was done I was able to screw the new shower head on! I wish I could get it out, but not possible. Thanks!

    • @theshowerheadstore

      Includes the flow restrictor. That doesn’t mean you’ll get that amount, could even be less depending on your water pressure.

    So there is a restrictor in both the actual head and the connector? Or just one but it varies on the model?

    • @theshowerheadstore
      @theshowerheadstore  Před 4 lety

      It varies on the model. Some shower heads don't have flow restrictor. The flow restrictor on our Handheld Shower Head is in the shower holder bracket. Most fixed shower heads like the one on the video have flow restrictor located in the female thread of the head.

    My wonderful commie state aka nanny state mandates the use of flow restrictors. I used to have a really good one back in 2000 (yes its bee that long since I was in the market for a new shower head) so I asked a sales lady at Home Depot about power shower heads and she said good luck in finding them in California. I have great water pressure and the shower head that the apartment complex has installed doesn't restrict the flow. I like to feel the water and not the trickle these flow restrictors produce. I have 2 in 1 Glacier Bay shower head. Good thing to know where the restrictor is located in the handheld shower head. But to be safe, I'll check all 3 connectors. Thanks!

    Silly question for u maybe but .. I had taken my flow restrictor out but found there was just a bit too much pressure.

    • @theshowerheadstore
      @theshowerheadstore  Před 4 lety +2

      Hi Brian,
      Typically there is a wider flat side and a more beveled side. You want the beveled side facing in towards the holder or shower head connection, wherever the restrictor was extracted from. ~ The Shower Head Store

      @@theshowerheadstore Hi, sry I just want to be certain. I'm kinda new to this plumber stuff. In my case, I'm replacing an old shower head with a new one. I had them take out the restrictor so I didn't see how it sat in the shower head. Let me put it this way if I can .. when the restrictor is inside the shower head, will the beveled side be facing the wall or facing the other way? Ty

    • @theshowerheadstore
      @theshowerheadstore  Před 4 lety +2

      It will be facing the other way. It should be facing towards your shower head, not towards the wall.

      @@theshowerheadstore Thank you. I'm no plumber or anything, but is it generally possible to modify something in the house to increase water pressure to certain areas such as the bathrooms?

    • @theshowerheadstore
      @theshowerheadstore  Před 4 lety

      @@v4d3r27 You want your house water pressure between 40 and 60 PSI. If it's lower than that, you'll have weaker pressure in the house. You can increase your water pressure valve at the point where it comes in the house on the water pressure valve.
