My father’s family have lived in Rutland since at least the thirteenth century. The oldest written record of my ancestors there is dated 1260. They were Norman and Breton soldiers with William the conquerer, so I guess they were give ex-Saxon land as a reward. Invading Anglo Saxons drove many Celtic Britons out of the country and over to what is now France, so it is fitting that they returned hundreds of years later to kick Saxon ass !
