How many Miles can you get out of stock Dunlop Rear Motorcycle Tire | Properly Inflated Check Tread

  • We had Brain at Denney's Harley-Davidson check our tire tread while we had the 10K service on the Road Glide.
Our front tire shows 5/32 inch & our rear tire was at 4/32 inch with 11,189 miles.
We decided to go ahead & replace the rear tire while we were in the shop. Although we could have continued with the rear tire a little longer, we would not be back in the shop for a service until our 15K mileage mark. The way we run & the amount of miles we run, we wouldn't have been able to get another 4,000 miles out of the rear tire. Best to go ahead & change to a new tire today instead of somewhere along the road.

Just replaced my American Elites with 21,000 miles on a 2016 Road Glide Ultra. This included a 9000 trip to Alaska and back, two-up with camping gear. Probably could have gotten a couple thousand more out of them. Big fan of the Dunlops!!

Me run two up always with baggage (Harley shirts, rain wear etc) and have always used Dunlop Elites that are made for the Electra Glide size of bikes. Overall they seem to be good at everything, rain, snow? heat and cold and of course longevity. Over the years we have used tires that were better at some things than others. The Dunlops are good at just about everything in my opinion.

I hear you on the American Elite tires...I have the Dunlop E3 rear and American Elite front on my Indian and they're wearing like iron. I should get at least 10k out of them riding as hard as I do. Real impressed with the life of them and they feel REAL good laid hard into corners.
I had the Michelin's on my last bike and while they were wearing like iron and felt great in the rain, they felt a little slick when cornering. The Metzeler ME880's on it before were way better in corners but they wore quick.

I've always run Dunlop on all my Harleys. I currently have a 2015 Ultra Limited Low. My first rear tire on the bike went 12,000 miles. The next went almost 18,000 miles. (admittedly ran it too long and started to lose traction) Now on the first tire, I did many long distance trips with a heavily loaded bike. The next two years, not so many trips, so not loaded up or running with a passenger very often. Bottom line is get a tread gauge (they are cheap), don't go below 3/32, and check pressure regularly. You could also run Nitrogen as a filler instead of regualr air. I did that on the second rear tire. Dunlop is also rated higher for wet roadways. As I've never not been caught in the rain on a long trip, I like that feature.

I watched this because I couldn't believe what I found the other day. Last spring I put new Stock Dunlops on my 88 Twin Cam Road King Custom Harley Dunlops at the Dealer. Put 5K on it last summer. Last winter I did some motor work to it (gear drive and cams) and the rear tire looked fine. Easy to tell since I have motorcycle lift and your staring right at it then. This year I only put 3500 miles on it and didnt even think to check anything other than tire pressure. Got back from a beach trip, and noticed it was bald. And in one area, it was wearing through the cords!!!!! In a 1 foot long area. WTH! I have never done a burn out (its an 88 LOL), and never ride two up or heavy. And Ok I am 230 lbs but damn.. 99% sure this Harley labeled tire had some issues, or I am way more aggressive than I think I am.

I’d run some down to the treads.Once I put a car tire on the back. It got me from Denmark to Spain . . E3 is great for rear. Although you might not get the extra 1000 miles out of it.compared to others And Bridgestone excedra. Up front. Is the best . Don’t get Bridgestone battle ax. Ole Ornery One, you have precious cargo on that bike. You could have picked up a nail on your last ride and now the pressure is half what is should be. You will not see that just walking up to the bike. Now you are running down the interstate and at speed that nail decides to take a hike and come out. You are now loaded to the max running interstate speed and your tire is going down. A low tire will overheat and come apart and if it does that while you are at speed you will have your hands full and will be lucky to get it stopped before it goes down. Mine happened when I ran over a belt buckle and at the speed I was travelling the tire disintegrated and down I went. Now I check air before each ride and I also have the Tire Pressure Monitoring System on the bike. My wife is my precious cargo, I would not want to hurt her for nothing in the world! Just a FYI Check the air. It is your first line of defense. I will get off my rant now, LOL.

For me its not about the miles i can get but the quality of the ride. I have been using Avon tires for last few riding seasons and recently installed the Avon Chromes. I have been getting really good miles out of them. Its all about correct tire pressure and if you ride solo and 2 up your tire pressure will change so just check each manufacturer suggested tire pressure cause i know Avon has different tire pressure settings for solo, 2up light and 2up heavy 👍🏻

In the 70s I used to get about 8000 to 10,000 miles out of a rear, in the front usually looked like they could still go another four or 5000. That was on a 750 Honda F or my Z1...
Then as tires got better, I could get about 5000 out of a rear, and the same with the front. That’s progress for you.
I don’t get any better mileage out of approximately the same weight motorcycle with the radials no matter what brand I use. I get around 5000 miles out of a rear, in the front might go a little more but I always change them in pairs.
V and Z rated tires have a higher speed rating because, there is less tread depth to the tire because, a tire that has more meat to it will grow more at the speed rating the tire is labeled for. VE rated tires I think are rated for 149 mile an hour plus speeds, so, that tire gets about half the tread depth of an H rated tire which is rated for I think around 112 miles an hour. I always buy H rated tires over V orZ rated tires if I have a choice for that reason, because an H rated tire has about 2000 miles more rubber on it than a V or a Z rated tire has. That same rule goes with car tires... H rated tires generally give a softer ride to because they do not have as stiff of a carcass as a V or a Z rated tire also. Sometimes you don’t have a choice, such as if your road racing, but for every day street riding, do you really go over 112 miles an hour constantly?
I usually run continentals, Dunlops, Metzler‘s, .. I just tried my first set of Avon tires on my Honda pacific coast. The Pacific coast is a hard motorcycle to get tires for. Because it has a weird sizing. I actually had to use a 90% aspect ratio instead of the factory 80% ratio on the rear because Avon does not make a tire in the size I need. I have never ever ever put different size tires on any of my motorcycles than the manufacturer says to use. But I had no choice this time.. the size I needed was out of stock.I do have a matched set from the same brand. Otherwise I would have had to mix brands.. I did check with the manufacturer and the tire is ok for the width of my rim, and I really can’t feel the difference. But I can see that these tires are going to last more than my usual 4500 miles on the Pacific coast. Avon’s have a reputation for high mileage.
I never carry a passenger. I never carry a heavy cargo load, usually just about 20 pounds of necessary items like electric tire pump electric vest cold-weather gloves rain suit cargo net water and updated tool kit with real tools, hot weather mesh jacket in the bags.I weigh 220 pounds, I never go over 75 miles an hour, I do sprain the speed limit constantly by about 5 to 15 miles an hour.. I do run my tires at the recommended tire pressures,, unless I am far from home and it’s going to be raining heavily all day. Then I go up 4 pounds in each tire to have a smaller footprint so my tires will squeegee the water harder. That was a tip from tire manufacturers when I roadraced motorcycles. And it worked because I won six championships in eight years taking care of my tires like that.and I always make sure I have a good valve caps on the valve stems. If you don’t have the valve caps on your valve stem’s, you will lose air as your tire hits bumps in the road,Combined with centrifugal force compressing the valve momentarily letting air escape...
I mount and balance my own tires since the 60s. I always use rubber lube, and not dishwashing liquid with lye in it that is corrosive to aluminum wheels. And I clean the tire and the rim completely before mounting new tires..As a result, my wheels really don’t lose air unless there is a temp change at the change of seasons..
I’ve had a few punctures over the 700,000 miles I have covered on the street. I have plugged the tires, and I have worn the tires out before I would change them... I had no problems. I never had a puncture on my heavier machines, of which I had 2 Venture‘s, and a BMW K 1200 LT. If I had anything larger than a pinhole puncture on the tires on those machines, I think I would’ve replaced the tire but otherwise no I don’t change the tire because I get a puncture with a plug in it. I can feel a tire when it’s going flat, and I would check a tire pretty much every day that has a plug in it until I was confident that it wasn’t leaking...I use those string/rope plugs that look like they have tar on them. And I use vulcanizing glue. I ream the hole with the reamer, and I put the glue on the reamer,And run that through the hole to coat the hole with glue, then I put the glue on the plug and insert the plug and cut off the excess. A 15 minute job. I do the same on my car tires when I get a hole of them, never had a plug failure.
I static balance my tires after I clean the rim and the tire, which is something the dealers never do. I know this because I worked 17 years in five different dealerships. The dealer may have a fancy spin balancer that balances to the micron, but unless the dealer cleans the rim, balancing to the micron is no better than me static balancing...
When I install new tires or anytime I have a wheel off, I clean and waterproof grease the axle, I clean and re-grease the dust seals, and check my wheelbearings. I am also careful never to over tighten the rear axle nut which puts a radial load on the wheel bearing, sometimes crushing the spacer between the two inner races of the two rear wheel bearings, causing one of the bearings or both of the bearings to fail sooner than later.
I am also very meticulous about installing the front wheel axle after cleaning and greasing the axle and cleaning and re-lubing the dust seals and checking the front wheel bearings. Not too many do it yourself guys realize that there is a proper sequence for tightening the pinch bolt on a front axle and then installing the nut and cotter pin... if you tighten the pinch cap first, and then tighten the axle nut, you will bind the fork tubes, and your front forks will not float freely along the ripples in the road.Over tightening and doing the actual install in the wrong sequence can also crush the spacer between the inner races of the front wheel bearings putting a radial load on those bearings causing the bearings to fail sooner than later.. I have also seen the decorative aluminum fork brace crack on Hondas because of improper sequencing of the axle reinstallation...
In case anyone is interested and you all should be. I have heard for decades people ask the question, why do my tires wear out on the left side first...I even saw in motorcyclist magazine, someone wrote that question in and the genius at the magazine said that the frame was bent, and that the guy should have his frame checked at his local dealer immediately.
The reason tires wear out on the left side faster is, not because your frame is bent, which it could be but not everybody’s frame is bent but everybody’s tires wear out on the left side first. The reason is, most of our roads are crowned so that the water will drain towards the curb. Consequently, you are riding on the left side of your tire most of the time even though you’re going in a straight line.
    You’re welcome

Always differing opinions on tires. I like Dunlops on my Road King and Metzlers on my hot rod FXR. Baggers are hard on rear tires, we always seem to have more on them because we have the ability to carry more "stuff". I do all my own maintenance so 21 years ago I bought a good quality tire machine. It has paid for itself easily. I run most tires about 10k miles and change them out.
