  • In 1995, Randy Pedersen lost the Touring Players Championship to veteran Ernie Schlegel when, needing a strike on the first ball of the 10th frame to win, Pedersen left an 8 pin on what appeared to be a perfect pocket shot.

It's $40,000 to the winner and a three year exemption. Randy Pedersen got the worst break in the world. A solid eight pin on the last ball. Ernie was stunned and shocked that he left the eight pin. Still, I sort of give him a pass because people just watch the stepladder. They don't see how much actual bowling in a tournament goes into getting to the final frame of a championship match like this. It was a career tournament for him, that he was out of position to win the way Petersen was bowling going into the 10th. And he released that ball you could tell it was perfect. So I kind of think the I lost/I won over those two seconds sent him into a spontaneous unconscious flip out. 😂

To this very day, it’s a rare thing for a bowler over the age of 50 to make telecasts regularly. Let alone to win. Especially at a major. Pete Weber was probably the toughest competitor over age 50 and Norm Duke was up there too. Also consider this. Ernie was mad at himself for giving Randy too many chances. Being awfully rough on Ernie. His last shot darned near left that same solid 8.. it was the last one off the deck and was practically upright when it went into the pit. So, he watches Randy throw the perfect shot.. he's a competitor.. they were both throwing punches and counters to perfection. Stone eight.. Ernie gets a reprieve.. His reaction was nothing more than a response to a pressure packed match. Bad sportsmanship? I don't think so. Lack of class? Not if you watched Ernie bowl throughout the decades. He's always been one heck of a colorful character. That's just him being pumped about winning. As human as it gets.

Well, while I respect your opinion, I will have to disagree. No one else except Pete Weber has reacted so immaturely. And yes, this win was very important to him, but he should not have gotten out of his chair, shouted "I don’t believe it" three times before jumping up and down like a 5 year old, shouted "For the old people," and then shouting "Muhammad Ali." He could’ve reacted like someone of his age.

Okay, while I respect your thoughts, I will have to share my thoughts on Ernie's reaction. No one except Pete Weber, maybe, has reacted so immaturely.

How would you feel if you were lying down in defeat as your competitor rubbed it in so much?
Yes, Randy had subtle ways of getting under other players' skin, but Ernie's reaction was over the top and showed little class/respect to Randy. Sportsmanship is expected at a high standard in bowling.
I know Randy was jacked up and BOTH of them were in the wrong, but I lost so much respect for Ernie when I first saw this.

It’s gonna make the sport today look like a cockhead. Bowlers never reacted to anything was the best thing the Sport should be. Expressing your emotions is great but do it in a different way as if you’re not bragging to your opponent. Like when EJ Tackett and Marshall Kent recently won the PBA Roth/Holman Doubles.

I remember seeing this when was televised. Tough break for Pedersen but that is bowling. Schlegel reaction was over the top and showed little class/respect for his competitor. Yeah, I know he was jacked up but I lost much respect for him that day. I also know when he was younger Pedersen had his subtle ways of getting under the skin of his opponents so somewhat of a payback.

The ball if thrown correctly splits both the 8 and 9 pin or put another way the ball takes out both the 8 and 9 pin. Not enough hook or not enough weight on the bowling ball itself. Randy deserved to lose.
