Kua Bay adheres to the Mauka-Makai spirit which is interpreted as a symbol of lava flowing from the mountains towards the sea. As you approach, the residence slowly reveals itself, designed to be hidden within a dark lava formation that creates a dramatic backdrop for this family retreat. Continuing inside, expansive views open up towards the turquoise waters of the Pacific Ocean beyond.
The house unfolds as a series of curated experiences. To reduce visual impact and offer a sense of privacy and seclusion, the hale and guest garage are embedded in the rugged landscape, almost disappearing beneath the living room roof. Upon entering the suite, guests are immediately drawn to the lava rock cave it contains-a sophisticated, moody outdoor space to admire the beauty of natural lava and bathe in privacy.
The main residence is an L-shaped building, with the bedrooms arranged along one bar, and the meeting room and master bedroom along the other bar. This large room opens on both sides via full-height sliding glass doors set into the walls. This volume is an extension of the surrounding landscape, functioning as an indoor-outdoor pavilion housing the kitchen, dining and living areas.
What further blurs the boundaries between inside and outside is the courtyard formed by the arrangement of the living room and main residence. On one side of the yard there is a series of reflection pools juxtaposed with a cluster of trees and a large lawn on the other side. Alaskan yellow cedar lines the exterior of the roof track, while the facade is clad in horizontal bands of basalt to echo the layered lava layers.
The furnishings are casual, favoring light colored sofas and chairs that serve as a counterpoint to the dark lava and basalt. An ocean-facing lanai descends from the pavilion to an infinity pool and outdoor gathering area in the same color palette. These spaces are strategically located at the bottom of the house, ensuring views from the pavilion are unobstructed and the surrounding islands are always visible on the horizon.
