  • Although Ladakh is famous for its amazing landscape and magnificent lakes, a trip to Ladakh is incomplete until you have visited some of the famous monasteries. The Diskit monastery is one of the famous monasteries in Ladakh and one of the major stops on your trip to Nubra Valley. The View of Diskit village from the Monastery…It was looking like WOW!!! We spent the day four of our Ladakh trip in Nubra Valley, where we went to Diskit Monastery and Hunder Village.
The Hunder village is popular for its silver sand dunes, double-humped Bacterian camel rides, beautiful landscapes, and a clear night sky for stargazing. It was once the capital of the former Nubra kingdom. There are several ruined buildings, including the ruins of the king's palace, known as "Elephant Palace". There is a fort at the top of the hill, and Hunder has two Buddhist Temples. The double humped Bactrian camels are another attraction in Hunder, and in India, they are only found in Nubra Valley.
Diskit Monastery, also known as Diskit Gompa is the largest and the oldest surviving monastery in Nubra Valley. Founded in 14th century, the Diskit monastery is beautifully located in a steep mountain face, right above the Diskit village and it stands tall on a hilltop above Shayok River. The main attraction of Diskit Monastery is a gigantic statue of Lord Buddha on its top which was inaugurated by His Holiness Dalai Lama.
The best thing I like about this monastery is the location, which is built on the edge of a mountain and this reminds me of the Tawang Monastery in Arunachal Pradesh and the Paro Taktsang Monastery (Tiger's Nest) in Bhutan. The common things among all these monasteries are the location, surrounding natural beauties and the peaceful environment, which will automatically give you a spiritual vibe.

Awesome, and very informative video. Btw, I observed something, At 14.31 min of the video, while you are walking in Diskit monastery, there was a sign board on the wall and something is written in Kannada. Not sure if you saw that, but I wanted to know if there is any connection with Karnataka.
