what are the symptoms of this issue? I rebuilt my carb and it's very very hard to start, and it spits gas out of carb into air filter and backfires once in a while. like this thing is very very hard to turn on!
I had the automatic decompression release built into the cam wear a groove in the rocker arm , started out acting like the starter was weak... check the valve adjustment if its backfiring through the carb... it’s definitely valve or cam related
What does the bolt do on the top of the bearing cap, on the right side of the screen? I took the valve cover off my 500 Sportsman today, and that bolt is just sitting in the bearing cap loose, with the threads stripped off. Does it keep the cam from "walking" side to side.
I think someone has been inside there before , that’s normally an allen key bolt , theres also a shiny bolt that looks like a zinc coated one that doesn’t look original either on the same side

$89 gets you new cam and rockers. Cheap and easy.
can this cause high idle. I bought a brand new carb and it is still running like crap, the idle is way to high and when you give it gas it bogs

Its a common problem with the Polaris 500.
What kind of oil did you use in it?
+shoe chew Vegetable or cooking oil
