  • Secret Santa is back and this Christmas is bigger than ever!
The EastIdahoNews.com team is busy helping a local man gift more than $500,000 this holiday season. A lot more. Secret Santa is a real person who wants to remain anonymous and hopes to help as many people as he can.
We will be surprising deserving people and families every day from now until Christmas with gifts unique to their circumstances.
Secret Santa received a very special request a few days ago from a woman writing about her father. Here's what it said:
My name is Nena Diaz and I am nominating my dad, Antonio Diaz, for a Secret Santa surprise. My dad has been the most caring, giving, compassionate and the hardest worker I will be ever meet. My mom and dad have been married for nearly 39 years. Three years ago, my mom was diagnosed with severe dementia. It truly seems like it happened overnight. Oct. 25, 2016 I had a brain tumor surgery from which I almost don’t make it. I remember waking up from the anesthesia and my mom fiercely trying to unplug all the cables, needles, respirator and all the other medical equipment I was plugged in to. On the other end, I could see my dad doing his best to stop her. Since then, my mom was never the same. Jan. 3, 2017 we received the terrible news of my mom’s diagnosis. It wasn’t only dementia, but it was severe dementia. My dad’s life shattered right there! This was his partner of 36 years of life that had just been diagnosed with an incurable and rapidly progressing disease. Their plans vanished in a matter of minutes. We have been losing my mom over the past three years incredibly quickly. Her memory, speech, comprehension, and her life was forever erased.
Mom does not know who we are anymore. But we know who she is, and we love her dearly! My dad has been a very honest and hardworking man. His shifts used to start at 5:30 a.m., ending at around 10 p.m., seven days a week. No Holidays, no weekends. He saved enough money to buy the house where mom and he live. All of his and my mom’s savings have gone toward paying mom's medical needs, which have been incredibly expensive. Neither one had insurance as this is not a benefit a person working in the farm can enjoy.
My dad drives an older truck that his boss lets him use during farming season. He owns a car, but I think he needs a more reliable vehicle for winter months. His dream has always been to own a Ford F-150, but his dream was cut with mom’s illnesses. He can only work a few hours in the morning while mom is asleep. The money he makes is not enough to even think on the possibility of a truck. He put aside, forever, his own life and the things he enjoyed doing the most, to take care of mom. She is his number one priority. He cleans, cooks, does laundry, feeds, baths and gives my mom her meds, takes care of all the physical, uncontrollable implications that come with severe dementia, and still manages to put a few hours of work.
His boss of over 43 years has been very understanding of my mom’s situation and is very accommodating with his schedule. You will never hear my dad complain about his situation. He says that even on your worst days, you can still be a blessing in other people’s lives. My brother and I are always with him and mom and drive them to mom’s medical appointments, hospital stays, or any other medical-related events. Doctors and nurses often look surprised to see the whole family there with mom and say they don’t see this unity and love often.
We are a very close family and if I could change a thing, it would be for my dad to fulfill his dream of a new truck! Thank you, Santa for reading my wish. My parents used to tell my brother and I when we were little that “if you look up at the sky at night and see three stars aligned together, make a wish. Santa is listening!” I’ve seen the stars last night and it is with a heart full of faith that I send my wish to you.
Secret Santa was touched by this letter and sent the East Idaho News elves to Antonio's house with a special surprise. Watch the video above to see what happened!

For those who are wondering, when a loved one has dementia, Alzheimer's, a massive stroke and has lost their memory and most of their speech, you cry so much during the beginning, that sometimes tears don't fall when your emotions dictate that they do; sometimes, you cry when no one is around but you and your thoughts. This fine gentleman has cried so much already that there is no tear to entertain us. God bless this family and Secret Santa, whoever you are. I absolutely love watching these. Blessings from Switzerland.

I'm sorry that you too, had to go through that! I experienced it also with my grandmother. And while she didn't remember anyone, and I thought me as well... One of the last things she did before crossing over was to reach out for my hand after telling me how beautiful I was (I thought she was thinking I was one of the nurses), and said "I'm sorry". We had a falling out many years before her illness, but I continued to see her in the nursing home fairly regularly until she passed away. I was completely shocked when she said that! Then she started to look straight up, and carried a full & long conversation in Spanish, which my generation was not taught. I knew she was speaking to spirit, possibly her son who surprisingly fell ill, and passed before she did. Her best friend also passed away unexpectedly, and four hours later my grandmother passed away too! I literally was racing between two hospitals to say goodbye to both of them. It is my belief that her best friend said it was time to go, and they traveled through the light together ❤ Best wishes to you, and yours! Christina & The Animal Love Fest 😽😽😽😽🐺🐰💋

My mother in law and her sister were diagnosed with dementia. We took care of them at home for as long as possible ( 3 years ). We then had to make one of the hardest decisions and place them in a nursing home. We are lucky and they can share a room and be together as sisters. I cry almost every day but know that we made the right decision.
My husband then had another decision to make, what to do with his aunt's condo. He decided to rent it out for only the cost of the HOA fees. A wonderful single mother and her son will be living there for a least a year. With the money she is saving on rent, she will be able to save the money for a down payment on a home of her own. We have spoken with her regarding purchasing the condo and she hopes to make that happen. We will continue on our journey and help her as much as possible. God bless everyone and Merry Christmas.

Dang. I think I cried all the way through this one.
That wonderful man reminds me of my husband of almost thirty years. I have an illness that went undiagnosed for about 25 years. Several years ago, I wound up very ill and in need of help to do almost everything. He, too, had to take on all the household chores as I was too ill to help. No matter how bad it got, he never once complained about taking care of me, how much my illness cost, the housework, lost sleep, fear, or that I cannot work a 9-5 job to help out financially. Not once.
I was finally diagnosed correctly and am much improved now, thank God. If I say anything about how hard it was for him on so many levels, he tells me he would do it all over again because he loves me.
Sniffle. I think I need to make him some brownies! ❤️ ❤️

Cant really blame him either... It sounds bizarre that he's been here for so long and doesn't speak proper English but at the same time the man works all day every day on a farm more than likely with other Spanish speaking folk and just never really had the time to learn. Between work and spending a little time with his family where is the time to learn a complex language like English? He seems to have a decent grasp at the language regardless though as long as things are kept fairly simple.
