Secret Santa surprise for family who lost everything, even son's accordion, when home was destroyed

The EastIdahoNews.com team is busy helping a local Secret Santa give $1 million to deserving people in eastern Idaho this holiday season.
Valera and Galina are the parents of three kids between 9-16. They recently came to the United States from Ukraine.
They had a home, which is very rare in Ukraine (most people live in apartments), but it was destroyed by a Russian tank.
Valera was a construction worker and Galina was a nurse. They’ve had many friends, family members, and close associates killed as they are from Bucha, where a large-scale massacre of Ukrainian civilians occurred. Bucha is just outside of Kiev and was the site of some of the fiercest fighting since the Russians invaded.
When the Russians left, hundreds if not thousands of dead Ukrainian citizens were found in the area. There were signs of torture, abuse, and other unspeakable events. This is what they left behind.
Valera and Galina lost everything and ended up in Idaho Falls where Valera works in construction and Galina worked in a potato cellar. The kids are in school and all of them are adjusting to their life.
Secret Santa asked the East Idaho News elves to pay Valera and Galina a visit - and we brought a special guest with an accordion for their 9-year-old son. Check out the unforgettable surprise in the video player above.

We take our peace for granted in the U.S. Mom was grateful to not have rockets going off and her children are safe. Please do an update with this family in the next year.
Yes! As a mom and gramma, that part made me cry!
Then please support all efforts to get gun controls passed into law. Recently Republicans voted down a bill to get a ban on rockets launchers for ordinary civilian use. How is this possible for a civilised country? This is a slippery slope and could end up destroying the peace you take for granted.

@Maisiewuppp our country is not attacked BECAUSE our enemies know there is a gun behind each blade of grass. Weapons in the hands of law abiding citizens help protect and preserve the peace. If you take the weapons from the people, as was done by the Nazi's and even today, North Korean's, you will live under an oppressive dictatorship and have no voice. A gun never killed anyone by itself, there was always someone who wrongfully or rightfully pulled the trigger. If you say prayers, thank our police officers, our US military servicemen and women, and our law-abiding citizens for your safety today. Oftentimes just the presence of a lawfully carried weapon by a law abiding citizen is enough to prevent a crime from occurring or someone from becoming tragically injured.

Yeah, it crossed my mind that in Idaho there are no tanks blowing up their home and then she said "no missiles". That almost broke my heart. We Americans have no idea. Cross your fingers about how our politicians ........ ah, never mind.
Wonderful help…we have 1,1 Million refugees from the ukraine in Germany, and they are all financially taking care of and receive free socialized medical care
Like others this one really touched me! One them wanting to give food reminded of my own ethnic roots. The young man who nominated them to realize they might need help and why we need to support Ukraine and be Thankful for our democracy and awake and mindful to keep it!

What a touching secret Santa this was. The mother was so grateful she had to wipe away tears. So impressed with the former missionary who still speaks the language so fantastic and was able to interpret.

This is by far the BEST and Most HUMBLING reaction from a family who lost everything in a WAR and still willing to SHARE what little they have. Because we have also refugees from Ukrain here. They are so humble and gratefull.
I hope every Ukrainian on this country feels so welcome. I hope they feel at home. They’re fully welcomed here in this country. I hope one day they’re able to go back to their homes and be safe, free, happy, and secure. But until them, or if they choose not to.. this is home.
What I love is the fact that this family is so grateful to be in America. And they wanted to share what little they had. Some of us could learn a few things from this family.

Agreed. Not every Secret Santa has such a touching story but it really brings a LOT more to the segments when Nate and team are able to bring out more of the recipient's story. This year the segments have tended to be shorter.

So nice to have the former missionary there to translate and explain culture differences. I was thinking "it's ok to turn down the tea as an LDS person but you got to take the food or you'll insult them". I had a Saudi Arabian friend in college and learned real quick to accept all offerings even if I was full and just had one bite.

I've had something less than a stellar day, but I found myself smiling hugely throughout this entire video, and when the son started playing the accordion, it reminded me of when I used to sing in a Slavic choir. Thanks, Secret Santa, for giving my evening a lift.

I am writing this comment from Canada. We have neighbors who came from the Ukraine years ago and they have taken in a refugee family. They now live in a basement with their 2 boys and themselves. I am so happy secret Santa could help this beautiful family.

This one brought back a flood of memories from my youth. Visiting family and friends in many European counties and how generous the people there are. You never visit without being offered tea and pastries. I loved this family. I hope this new adopted country and especially Idaho, brings them happiness and peace. I think they will thrive here. Your Secret Santa advisor who nominated these people is a very special person. That this small apartment is such a huge safety zone for them makes my holidays that they feel safe. The Irish relatives always put in their emails/letters/communications TG here and there throughout the correspondense. Such as "he healed quickly..TG". It means Thank God. TG for Owen in this family's life, it has brought financial comfort beyond no bombs.

Imagine losing every material thing you own, due to a fire, tornado, or some other catastrophe. Add to that, the loss of your friends, relatives, and your coworkers you’ve come to know over time. Then, top this off by having to move to another country where you do not speak or understand the language!
