Finally An Honest Video On Rome's First Emperor Augustus

  • The First Roman Emperor. A lot of people mistakingly believe that it was Julius Caesar - a man many think established the Roman Empire. That is not correct. Although... I see where they are coming from, because Caesar definitely set his successor up for... success:
    Emperor August Caesar, born as Gaius Octavius, but best known as Octavian... he was the one who built the Roman Empire as we know it. But in order to do that, Augustus had to battle the other man that followed in Caesar's footsteps: Mark Antony. So this video is kind of as much about Mark Antony as it is about Augustus. Both were fighting over who would rule Rome, and... Cleopatra also plays a major role in this store, as you'll see in the video. So this video is quite star studded, which is why I couldn't help myself and just had to make it an hour long - we're talking about Rome's first emperor after all, so I had to deliver on this first episode of:
    Rome's Greatest Emperors: Augustus Caesar
    Notes:
    Man... a lot of notes for this one. This video is already an hour long as it is, but there are still a lot of things I had to leave out, or else... we'd be looking at a feature film length video.
    First of all... it fascinates me how close Mark Antony came to ruling Rome. Consider that history is written by the winners, so Augustus would have done anything to diminish Mark Antony, and still... his story is one that paints him as Augustus' greatest rival. Mark Antony as Rome's Emperor definitely would be an interesting What If...
    Not sure if anybody reads these notes, but if you...: Let me know what you think: Could Antony have conquered Rome and what would history be like if he did?
    I also don't mention the fact that Augustus exiled his own daughter Julia, for breaking the morality laws, which just goes to show how serious he was about them. Except of course... when he broke the laws.
    Another major part I couldn't cover is how Antony's wife tried to overthrow Augustus, shortly before Mark Antony was married to Octavian's sister. A fun little side story with very bloody consequences... maybe I should explore it in another video...
    Get All My Artwork & Support The Channel:
    I get a lot of questions about my artwork and where it’s from or rather who draws it. Well the answer is that I create it - I don’t draw it. I use AI to create the artwork, using specific prompts, specific style influences from 18th and 19th century artists, and I spend about 10 hours per video just on the artwork. Each video has roughly double the artwork of what you actually see in the video, so a lot of it is unused. The good news here though is that you can get all that artwork on my Patreon - the artwork I do use, and the artwork I don’t use. Plus, by subscribing to my Patreon you are making a major contribution to Briefed and helping me to keep this channel going, because this is my full time job and the survival of the channel and quality of the videos greatly depends on said support. In return for supporting, you get more than the artwork though - you also get exclusive videos and producer credit, as well as access to a producer group that gets to vote on thumbnails, gets behind the scenes etc.
    If you choose to become a Patron - thank you. I do not take it for granted.

    Footage:
    I used a lot of clips from Rome's HBO, and the footage when I talk about the war in Germania is from Netflix' 'Barbarians'. The phone call scene is from Taken, and the scene in the dark cave is from Dracula Untold, while the Bane scene is from 'The Dark Knight Rises'.

    Augustus was very ill. He was no coward. The times he was accused of “hiding” but the reality was that dust and other things made him sick. He actually participated in the Dalmatian campaigns and bloodied his sword. He was very clever but his wife Livy was even more so. They made on heck of a pair.

      Octavian went to Gaul as soon as he was well, and had no idea that the campaign ended in success.
      It showed such courage and loyalty, that he personally traveled back with Julius. And that was the event that made him the heir, as it were.

Augustus died aged 75 and had Tiberius set up to inherit for years and planned his death perfectly even dying in the same room as his father. Tacitus paints Livia as an evil step mother who murdered everyone so Tiberius could inherit. Which makes no sense as after Gaius and Lucius died Augustus set up Tiberius as his heir even ordering the death of his unstable grandson Posthumous Agrippa so Tiberius would be unchallenged.

      The Thirty Tyrants of Athens, for example, became tyrannical (bad). Thus the connotations of The Tyrant with the Bad.
      The Roman Republic 'Office of Dictator' was an emergency six months position, granted by the Senate, to fix up a crisis (proverbial gravitas). Ceaser claimed the Office for Life (Plutarch, et al).📚
      Some scholars suggest that the inflexibility of the Senate had been deliberately de-stabelized for one person to: "...seize the Crown..." (Scholastic term for machinations at the time.)

      @@motionpictures6629 Mark Antony is a grandson of Lucius Julius Caesar but to my knowledge "Caesar" descended from Gaius Julius Caesar. Caesar would have been the 4th Gaius Julius Caesar. Mark and Caesar's common ancestor was Sextus Julius Caesar. Sextus is 3x great grandfather to both of them. This is Rome, so they could be related in other ways but this is what I know from their family tree.

    Great channel, dude. Your delivery and style is so different, and I'm digging it. And it pains me to admit, as a professional artist, but the Midjourney images are superb, too.

    Funny thing about Pompey, although he was the "Face" of the conservative and traditionalist Senate against Caesar, he himself has been Caesar before Caesar was Caesar.
    Before Caesar's rise to power (which he supported and facilitated - being his ally and even friend) Pompey had been feared and distrusted by the Senate just as Caesar was, for his popularity with the people and military successes - just as Caesar was. He was nearly as ambitious as Caesar, the only difference being that Caesar wanted power, while Pompey preferred glory.
    It's just that, in the end, the Senate felt that Caesar was more of a threat to them than Pompey.

      thank you, and thank you for the kind offer 🥹 I actually enjoy the editing process, something meditative about it - I'm just still new to CZcams and learning the ropes when it comes to copyright. seems like when a clip is over 20 seconds, and definitely when over 30, you get issues (especially if its a big studio)

    • @Briefed_Mythology
      @Briefed_Mythology  Před 5 měsíci +2

      which is honestly weird. I understand it in principle, but at the same time it is free and amazing promo for the movie (or the music)

    • @smartstupidity1159
      @smartstupidity1159 Před 5 měsíci

      Oh yah for sure and it’s 6 seconds for a song or less sometimes and it’s wonderful that you edit for the same reason i fell in love with editing i would love to share the knowledge in case you want to expand to using clips from things other than movies or getting permission because sometimes if you ask for it beforehand they might just give it to you (your mileage may very obviously from studio to studio)

    • @smartstupidity1159

      Oh boy don’t let Nintendo hear you they might Crucify you for saying that,
      But yah there is a lot of people who like to have monopoly and not understand the concept of free promoting through social media reposting and what not especially for older films
