I bought one similar to this one. It has 250;000 kilos on the clock . As an 80 year old guy I bought it as a project to keep me busy and to try and make it spotless. I am surprised at the car and enjoy working on it. The only problem is that the plastic parts had became very brittle and is prone to breaking even when a screw is removed. The cost though of replacing anything on the car is extremely expensive in South Africa .I intend using it a toy which will be used only on special short trips.

Same problem with my 1994 SL500 R129. Vanity lights, sunvisors and top plastic parts are falling apart and very expensive in Australia too.

It is a nice and sporty car. Engine is mostly flawless... the fenders and rust are the biggest problems. The roof and Electrics sometimes. But.... it has tons of charm... do yes i would buy one... only silver metallic with red interior...

Certainly I wouldn’t buy particular you that one that is not being taken care of it very good it’s a good car just you’ll have to service it maintain it and bit spent for it I wonder if that is being imported from Japan if so in Japan it’s hard to find that low grade I have one from Japan is 22 years old everything is spotless no rust at all it is 2000 but is absolutely fun car to driveThanks have fun cheers

I have a 2001 SLK320 with 65K miles. Mostly love the car but it has issues. The engine is bulletproof, the retractable hard top is really cool, but good lord the interior plastics are horrible. Every single part (yes, all of them) on the dash and console are cracked in multiple places. I am replacing them as I can but parts are hard to find and expensive when you do. Heard MB used some experimental resin blend on these R170 cars. One guy said his is like the whole interior is made of thin sheets of cold wax. Wish I could fab suitable replacement parts. Otherwise the car is a beast. Very powerful and a blast to drive.

True, but when buying a car, if it has 20 small & big issues it would be much harder for most people to restore it to a good condition...

Bought my SLK 200K 2001 with Conti at the front and Michelin at the rear axle. So far only rust issue. But black is easy to Reprint. Changed steering damper, brake hoses, the little trunk lifters and fixed my red interior. Besides that only standard maintenance and i love to drive it.

My 1999 ex-Japan,, over the past 10 years had only two problems: sagging headliner (reglued) and failed lighting module (soucred another from a dismantler, fiddly to replace but doable). Surprised at the state of that engine and the rust. Walk away. The drivetrain in these is almost bulletproof.
