My mom was scammed. She sent $50000 cash. Fortunately she called you right after dropping the package off at UPS and you was able to retrieve it after it left the bill. These people are the lowest of the low, what you and your team is doing is a real blessing. THANK YOU *STRONG WIDGET* !
P.S. my mom's had several scam calls since, but now she enjoys playing with them....hoping she'll get more calls. Maybe she'll join you someday in the People's Center...
The amount of bravery this took was INSANE. These people all had their lives in danger, but still decided to go through with the recovery for the sake of busting bad scammers. True respect *Strong widget!*

How are the scammers getting chase customer information to even call them? This sounds like a data breach gone bad!!!!

This is not Chase issue, scammers use other banks as well. Just remember, banks or irs don't call or text you. Don't talk to those people
Could be dumpster diving. They could have also used a virus on these people's PC to obtain this info.

It’s clear that it’s either an inside job or Chase’s system has been hacked because the scammers are aware that these people have large amounts in their checking account. How else would they know who to contact and their phone number. Chase knows more than their telling. They know their to blame but they’re shifting the blame to the customers instead of their faulty internal system.

Its called indian scammers they do this by using a computer n text your phone acting like chase, wells fargo, or other banks and the culprit whos doing wont get arrested cuz they r in india n if people get scammed when its 2023 then its the victims fault for being ret@rded n getting scammed 🙄🙄 and the banks have not been hacked they just copy what a bank text would look like
The one guy said the caller knew all his recent transactions. This is definitely a hack or an inside job.
From data breaches, they could have logged in with him but need his "help" convincing him to give his security info out or the 2FA codes.
Why do I have a feeling that it's an inside job. Someone working for Chase knows the ins and outs.
Because Zelle was created by seven of the largest US banks. I can't help but suspect they may be profiting from the scammers.

Usually call centers that are overseas are operated by a third party company. One scambaiter recently found out said third party company hires workers in the day time for legitimate bank business, while hiring scammers in the evening.
The scamming business is a billion dollar industry in India. Police and government agencies are paid off.

I don't think you can assume that always. Sometimes banks do call to check with you on fraud related activity. So it's very hard to tell.

Chase would never tell you you have to transfer to a different account.
It was an internal account from savings to checking. somehow they hacked his checking or set up an ACH transfer which is not hard at all. Why don't these banks have limits to automated wires for example 5000 and you have to go in a branch. 160k and no safety protocols. not even an additional text saying we are wiring 160k verify if yes. i know Citi does that.
This. The bank isn't going to call or email you. If there's something concerning, they're going to send you something by mail

I have my bank's number programmed in my phone. Someone tried calling me from a spoofed number claiming to be from my bank. I knew better than that but they (the scammers) tried it
The scammers already have your name, number, account number, and transaction history. Sounds like an inside job.

Definitely suspect current or former employees who have all of that information. Plus they know the procedures and script the real fraud department follows, so they use that word for word- just ask for a confirmation code before moving forward with it all- that's the only difference between the scammer and the real fraud department.
This unfortunately isn't just happening with chase. I've seen these same texts from my bank and I always ignore those texts. This is not only sad but scary.
I get them all the time, even from banks and CC companies that I don't even use. All you gotta do is look at the phone number. If it starts with a + it's almost certainly a scam.

Something is not adding up here. How are the scammers getting into these accounts without personal information? Based on this report just answering the text and having them call you is giving them access to your account. How?

We're going through this with our credit union. When they reach out by text, never text back. Call the bank direct.

That's what I do ! I call the bank with the number I keep on me. Like I told one person who called me your nothing but a voice on the phone !
Just a tip whenever you go online to your bank read the scams or identity theft pages, they are really helpful, everything these scammers do, it’s in the scam prevention page on your banks website. Most banks won’t call you about anything, you have to call them, that’s a red flag right there.
The police and FBI can track the wire transfers, so why don’t they? Why don’t they freeze the fraudulent accounts where the money was transferred to? As to the customer who lost money to the scam, file a police report. It’s not difficult work to chase a wire transfer when there’s a paper trail a mile long. Don’t settle for “no”. I hope everyone gets their money back.
It's the card companies that refuse to share the account info, and local police lack the motivation and the bank's won't give up highly profitable accounts - frauds or otherwise.

Because the scammers are sometimes working out of Russia, China, Iran, Turkey, Brazil, Nigeria, Vietnam, Or India. The big 8 of countries that love scamming the US
Never respond any messages from bank on your phone. If you have doubts, just go to your local branch for answers. End of story.
That's what I do ! I keep their number with me.
My smart phone has zero financial connections to anything. When I get texts from fake banks or whatever, I'll wait until I get home, then go online with a trusted saved web address to check out any activity. Also, if you get a real person on your phone who says they represent some health company, organization, or whatever, then they say the phone call is being recorded followed by them saying "Can you hear me ok?"...HANG UP!
That can only mean his banking information has been compromised.
When are people going to realize that they shouldn't respond to these TEXT?? Don't call that number that they send, don't click on the link!! I always call the number on the back of my card. Sometimes I think I am paranoid a bit, but I rather be cautious then sorry.
They're not. They're too gullible. Bad things don't exist in their make believe world. Things like that don't happen to them, it happens to OTHER people.

Not exactly... A lot of people have text notifications set up with their bank to notify them whenever transaction takes place, or whenever you use your debit card, etc. The scammers more than likely modeled the format of their text message to look exactly like the legit ones from the banking app, purposely making it difficult for someone to tell the difference

When ever you get a text like this, DO NOT RESPOND! Once you do they know the number belongs to someone and you will get more scam text and call!

Can’t protect stupid, never respond to text or call. Instead call chase back. The only way to know for sure you talked to chase employee is you calling chase number on the back of your card.

How hard can it be keeping your banks phone number with you ? I was told once that did not come from us, deleted it.
Chase needs to update their security protocols and at the same time customers need to stop being so freaking stupid and falling for these obvious scams
If worried about fraudulent activity in your bank account, never take care of it on the phone, go to the bank and make an appointment directly to inquire.
They always go after the checking accounts. If you hear "put it in your checking" don't do it. In fact, alot of banks do not even send you electronic messages or phone calls.

Banks will NEVER REACH OUT TO YOU. Please be careful.
They do, not with anything like this. But banks will notify you when suspicious transactions occur.
Yes they will reach out with a text but you can also verify those transactions appearing on your account. Then you should immediately call your bank. Zelle transfers don't do pending they just transfer.
A bank's fraud department will call you and send secure email to your online account if fraud is suspected. If fraud is confirmed, the bank will handle the matter with no further action on the customer's part. If the bank card is compromised and needs to be replaced, they will use the address on-file. If the account is compromised, they will lock the account until you verify your identity in-person. They NEVER ask you to do anything right then-and-there. They NEVER ask for codes sent to your phone or email. They NEVER ask for your personal information.
Need to say "Yes" when you get that message. Scammer will get confused and frustrated
NEVER say "yes" to a call you did not initiate yourself! It can be recorded and used as "proof" you agreed to a transaction.
Banks needs to get together and do some PSA commercials. Not everyone is aware of this scam. We see hundreds of commercials at home trying to sell us everything under the sun. Why can’t someone put some damn commercials together warning people about this scam?
I always been with Credit unions since I was 18. Banks seems to me always have issues and charges a lot. This is really sad😟
It's because banks charge you for your bank accounts.
It happens at credit unions, too. I've received and reported 2 scam attempts to my CU. Both times they shrugged it off. Nothing they could do.
This happened with USAA too, and they didn't replace a dime
I am 66. I delete all emails like this. If I have any questions I go to my bank or I call them. There has been quite a bit of information put out there about what you should do or not do that I am surprised that people fall for this.
That’s horrible I know someone’s mom lost over 30,000 the cameras showed someone at a different state lost and a camera showed someone take the money out. How!!! It’s so hard to get your money sometimes but someone online can do it so easily

Lots of reports around the country about Chase not reimbursing for these fraudulent wire transfers.
I opened a new chase account. I moved money into the new account and immeadiatly got a call from the fraud department. Funny thing is, it was a regular number and they were asking for personal ifo. I told them i wasnt sure this was a legit call. The bank does contact you, and they do sent text verification. This is not these peoples fault.

I feel both ways - it was an obvious scam - I tell everyone CALL when you get a warning about a delivery, wire instructions, virus, subpoena, IRS, account verification. Don't ever take a call - no ones customer service is that good that they'll call you for anything.
So you get a txt from someone and just believe it’s who they say they are. That txt even looked fake.
Here’s my thing….people keep saying “you put ur money in the bank because it’s safe.” Yea! Maybe in 1992! It’s 2023, technology is alone and well and nobody is safe!
Also, Chase never sends alerts out through an entire phone number.

There are a lot of fraudulent calls for various companies out here. Amazon is one of them. I just got a call from Amazon, talking about a purchase I made for over $1K. I immediately hung up and reported it to Amazon for them to clear it up.
They're not saying that these people gave the scammers their passwords, but that's what they did. Chase already knows your password and would not ask for it like that
Lol, this is true. No one is going to ask for your password or pin. They can ask to change your pin, because even if they have a keylogger, they're not going to know your original pin...unless you do something stupid if that scammer asks, can you please input your old pin so we can change it to a new one

Rule # one - Do NOT do ANY transactions over the phone. Computers are your worst enemies.

It's very curious that it's always seems to be Chase Bank that's involved in these scams.
First, it's obviously a scam. Now why chase, because they are big. The scammers need to make some effort to come up with Bank specific scripts, so they focus on the largest banks.
If you gave up your info to the scammer, the bank can't help you. As far as they know, you could've made that transfer yourself.
Consumers (not business accounts) do have some recourse if you detect the activity within a certain time, but for the most part you're on your own.
Think of it this way, if you left the keys under the doormat and someone broke into your house, no one is responsible for the loss except yourself.
Why didn’t Chase send a notification? Notifying their customers about the fraud, I don’t care how much it would cost them. they should at least warned their customers.

Problem is people trust text messages too much.
Question is why are these scams not stopped by the govt or someone in charge? Maybe they don't care.

If you willingly engage in text-messages...and you THINK it's your bank without verifying first, it's not the bank's responsibility to refund you for money you willingly gave away to a scammer.

This almost happened to my relatives at Wells Fargo last year. It's a problem everywhere. Luckily they drove to the branch directly and stopped it right before. The staff were not sympathetic but just told them they're lucky bc it's so common

Whenever you get a text or a call from anything related to the bank, do not respond to it!!! Hang up the call and don’t respond to the text!!! Call your bank directly to confirm
Chase doesn't care I've been a customer of theirs for 35 years and when you go up to the teller for help or to ask her what happened that somebody stole money from your service account they have no answer to tell you all they tell you is here's the number to call fraud you call fright and I'll give you the all kinds of run around

I don't answer the phone unless I know the number and know the person who's calling. I receive like 5 or 6 calls daily from unknown numbers and don't answer any of them.
In my opinion it's someone inside the bank relaying information to someone outside that scams customers. It happened to my mom with her checks. Someone used a check form her account that she never ever used yet. It was an inside job.

That's why I think Chase bears some responsibility too. There should be something in their system that flags these large transfers of funds.
Chase should be responsible according to EFTA guidelines and it is not the customers responsibility to safeguard the account. I had nearly 16k taken and haven’t transferred $ talked to a scammer etc Chase sent an alert stating 2 of the transactions were declined and yet the $ was still taken out and so far they haven’t reimbursed anything! Well…wait one $40 charge!!
When l was working in Vienna Va, my bank sent me a notice saying that l owed maryland state taxes. I didn't get a notice from Md and before l could take action it was gone. Fortunatly there was only a $ 425 balance. The bank charged me a withdrawal fee and left me with $5. I never received a receipt paper from Maryland so l think it was a bank scam and took my account to another bank. 😂😂😂
Lessons Learned: Never Reply Back To Somethig That You Arent Sure. Call up the banks main number and confirm test message.

You do get an alert message if you made like an overseas or an unusual purchase asking to confirm it.

It is a sad fact when bank customers get scammed. Anytime you receive anything in text from your bank it is always best to go to your branch and have a face to face with them. Text or Email scams are abundant in today's world. Once a transfer happens there is little the bank can do, you must be on the look out at all times and be your own best advocate. Again I am sorry for the victims of these sort of scams.

Scammers are even texting saying packages are not deliverable to my address via ups. What is the scam in that? I don’t want to find out.
I got a phone call, from my bank fraud Dept. I wasn't sure so I did hang up, then called the number on my card. That is the ONLY safe way to do so. I don't click text messages. I go to the online bank app or mobile app to see what's going on.

I think Chase should implement a message on their telephone system. That warns people when they call in if they have received some kind of an s. M. S that they should not respond and should hang up the phone immediately and go to their bank.
This is what happens when I.T. is off-shored
Everyone knows when you get one of those you don't respond to that text but you call the bank immediately. And the bank removed the charge that the test was referring to. It looked real it was real but it's the same as one that's not real. You don't respond to the text by text. You called the bank using the number you always use and resolve the situation on the phone with the person that you know is at the bank. You never know who's on the other side of a text that's why you never respond directly to the text.
This is why I no longer bank with Chase!
Is there a class action lawsuit against Chase for allowing fraudulent activity on their brand new 1970’s banking system.
