"Disappeared": Chris Hedges Responds to YouTube Deleting His 6-Year Archive of RT America Shows

- CZcams has deleted the entire archive of "On Contact," an Emmy-nominated television show by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Chris Hedges which was hosted on the Russian government-funded news channel RT America. We speak with Hedges, who connects the CZcams censorship of his show to a growing crackdown on dissenting voices in American media. "There's less and less space for those who are willing to seriously challenge and question entrenched power," says Hedges, who says "opaque entities" like CZcams shouldn't have the power to take down outlets like RT America, despite the channel's source of funding. "Are we better off not hearing what Russia has to say?" asks Hedges.

I assume because any 3rd party position undermines our Coke-Pepsi democracy. Assume they’re happy to amplify any anti-establishment thinking, whether progressive or Trump-type, as long as it destabilises. It may be the same to them, but it’s not to us. Have to use discernment. We want a democracy based on discerning voters; not on sheltered voters - single media and single, state sponsored narrative, Putin style.

Mr. Hedges finally distance yourself from the Russian-funded media! Otherwise you are guilty of legitimizing and supporting an unprovoked war of aggression. You know very well that RT not only consists of your program, but is also involved in disinformation campaigns about COVID or the conditions in Russia. For example, in Great Britain, in connection with the Russian poison attack in Salisbury and the war in Syria three years ago, RT was fined 200,000 pounds for repeated violations of objectivity rules. If a media outlet repeatedly violates such regulations, it should not be surprised if it is closed down. Don't tinker with a martyr legend here. RT is not innocent. If you do not finally distance yourself from Putin and his misdeeds, you will flush your credibility down the toilet.
All the Russians need is Fox, and they are too big to cancel.
It is hard to empathize with Hedges though. It is tough to get funding to perform real journalism independent of ratings these days. That is no excuse to take funding from authoritarian governments like Russia or China -- countries that demonstrably kill, imprison, and disappear journalist who dare to contradict state propaganda.
Take your lumps Chris, find a better, less conflicted way to practice journalism.

Chris Hedges is one of the very few people I trust nowadays. He is not afraid to speak the truth even if it costs him. Only a select few in human history had that same level of courage, those who survived managed to change the world. But no pressure, Chris :)

The reason he was silenced is that he is one of the best journalists with credibility. One of very few left standing. CZcams is now full of rug media outlets. All following the plan to design a society of "bewildered herd". I stumbled upon an article about this plan 4 or 5 years ago. I thought it was preposterous until I visited our local shopping centre, and paid attention to the people there. To my horror, what I saw was a bewildered herd: a crowd of people aimlessly wandering around and many were munching or sucking on something

If Chris had these videos up on his own CZcams channel they would not have been taken down. Not a single thing Chris has ever said would lead to CZcams taking them down. CZcams made the decision to stop doing business with the Russian government, the videos were on the Russian government's channel.

Hedges eloquence, insight, and integrity has already penetrated the public consciousness. I see his name referenced everywhere. I guess some word like ''Hedgian'' will soon be coined! He is a force. I'd wait in line to hear him speak- and my days of ''going out'' are long gone. It's like Ukraine banning Russian literature and music- YT deleting Hedges is am impoverished OF YT.

Anyone that supports Palestine, brings up illegal wars, crimes against humanity modern day slavery, Gaza, Yemen, racism is being censored on this platform now. It is really is no longer valid as a source for independent journalists. Which to me was half the reason I was up here. Now I’m following everyone to all these different independent platforms and know I’m missing a lot in the meantime because I’m one of the marginalized who can’t afford to subscribe to all of these.
They did not remove Chris, they removed RT because they have chosen to no longer do business with Russia. If Chris owns the video material he can put it up on his own channel, no problem.
Chris is an innocent bystander. YT is rightfully removing RT. Russian propaganda.

Maybe Chris can muster up reasons to why saving this country from becoming an authoritarian state, would be more productive.

Hedges has been a regular Democracy Now guest for many years. Keep watching / listening to DN - lots of great critique on there.
I agree with hearing all perspectives of things. It gives better context to make my own decisions.

RT played both sides just to improve how the Kremlin looked, the liberties that certain hosts like Hedges talks about don’t exist in Russia either. Al Jazeera has even better coverage of world events than RT but Qatar is even more repressive than Russia has been (pre full invasion).

I think that to gain any understanding of a story you need to watch or read as many different angles as you can. When you are only ever told one side of a story your understanding of it is incomplete and will lead you to believe something that is a lie, because most stories are told from one persons view and are far from the hole story... Every time I see someone getting "Disappeared" from the public I know that we are all under attack, but most of the people don't understand how it will let "them" tell us anything they want and we will have no way to prove it to be "The Truth" or "A Lie".

We can and should be able to have sensible conversations but everyone has to play fair, facts, reality and a good faith commitment to the conversation are hard to come by these days.

Flat earth is the opposite only of round earth, not worth discussing. Or else have that discussion apart from climate science.

More common ATM is an expert in a given subject and someone doing cartwheels, circus stunts and generally messing things up. 2 sides of a given subject seems increasingly difficult to find these days as media seems to thrive on controversy instead of accuracy.

This was a very enlightening and refreshing viewpoint by Democracy Now and of those Americans that are rarely in the mainstream news in Europe.
Who controls the controllers? There should be a judicial process to decide the legitimacy of blocking people. The only reason for stopping one from expressing themselves is if the person's ideas causes CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER. The US system is way too stable to be so jittery about freedom of speech. The system's power is too deeply rooted in the culture to become so defensive.
Any factual, science based information that is useful to the people should be allowed and debated in an open society like the US.

One of my favorite CZcamsrs says “If the content is so bad you have to delete it, call the police.” She’s not advocating for arresting CZcamsrs; she’s pointing out that the way CZcams responds is similar to how you’d respond to criminals.
