    So take something exciting and unique and cannibalize it and make 6 generic songs. It's likes he wants to take all the creativity out of this song and make something bland so they can sound like everybody else. I think he sort of missed the point. This is the 3rd reaction I've watched with him. What does this guy actually like? And for the record, I'm not a big Maximum The Hormone fan but I at least appreciate what they are trying to do and respect that they don't sound like other bands.

    After three reactions by Darren that left me scratching my head I googled the guy to get more info. I thought he was some sort of music journalist but after looking him up I realized he interviews all sorts of people about all sorts of stuff. He seems to be more interested in entertainment in general, including lifestyle, food and wine, non-profits, he literally says he's open to covering anything. Which is fine, he might even be really good at it but he clearly is not any sort of expert on music. Now, his reactions seem to make a lot more sense. No disrespect to him, I'm sure he is very good at what he does but it sort of puts his music reactions in a much more clearer light when you know his background.

      He reminds me of the New York Times critics that opine with assurance about something they know nothing about. I read a NYT food critic reviewing a Tex-Mex restaurant confidently say "red chili is much hotter than green chili." As someone from the desert southwest, I could instantly tell he had never knowingly eaten Jalapeños or Anaheims. All those New Yorkers taking him at his word...

    Hmmm. I wonder if he gets satire. "I couldn't tell if it's entirely a satire thing, if it's performance art, or because everything is so sing-along that they're going: 'We're going to give these people twelve choruses in twelve genres and _that's_ what's gonna make us huge.'" Okay. *(A)* they don't care about being huge *(II)* they're already huge *(3)* they're satirizing American culture. It's hard to miss, like the _"pe - nis"_ in the chorus.

    Probably not the best representation of Maximum The Hormone because it's somewhat them criticizing the typical popular music over the years. It's also not my favourite track by a large margin, that said the large amount of changes is very MTH. I was already expecting him not liking MTH, but I knew this track was going to be an even tougher sell with all the vocal effects they put on this to represent modern music in the US.

    • @jefffromchicago6321
      @jefffromchicago6321 Před 10 měsíci +2

      I thought he might overlook the effects and see them as an integral part of the art of the video. But he didn't see it as art.

    • @rolandkarlsson7072
      @rolandkarlsson7072 Před 10 měsíci

      Actually Maarten, I think this was a good choice. Some stuff by MTH are really obscure. This one is perfectly possible to follow. They make simple and almost predictable changes between different styles. And there is no "silliness" without music, that they sometimes tend to do. That Darren had the opinion that it had been better as three songs was a surprise. If that had been known in advance, then there might have been a few better choices maybe. But not many. Maybe a live one. I remember one where they were standing at a stage and the audience wildly headbanging. I think that one was only one simple style. But, I do not remember the name of it. Anyhow, it do not matter. Those reactions have most been a review of the reactor. To see what kind of fault he find in almost anything he has been shown. Is that fun? A little.

      I wasn't trying to criticize the choice as I don't think it would have mattered anyway. It's probably more me not enjoying the track as much as some of their other ones. And I certainly wouldn't have put ALIEN on like a lot of people would, I don't think tha'ts a great track to get people into MTH because it confuses most people without the context. MTH is always going to be a tough sell if the people you are showing it to are not open minded enough about music. A lot of their music would probably have bounced off of me as well 5+ years ago.

    • @rolandkarlsson7072

      @@MaartenT Totally agree. MTH is not an easy sell. I remember the first I saw - it started with a LOOOONG uninteresting walk in a park. Then the main singer was puking. There is only one reason for me not just shutting down and never more look at MTH, and that was that I already had seen Nemophila's both covers of their songs. They are brilliant.

      I had heard about them for years, but never checked them out until I saw Nemophila's cover of Shimi. Shimi is probably still my favourite MTH track although it's not as genre bending as a lot of their other tracks. So I certainly have to thank Nemophila for getting into MTH as well. I do like their more crazy newer tracks as well and actually prefer them over their more punky older ones, but yes they are certainly not for everybody.

  • @jefffromchicago6321
    @jefffromchicago6321 Před 10 měsíci +4

    They started out with more traditional songs that weren't popular. The did an album with the sudden and severe change ups and they were a hit so they stuck with it. They kind of invented a genre. Early BABYMETAL used the change ups like this in a few early songs between pop and metal. Then they started to blend so that the change ups weren't so severe. MTH CD'S themselves don't hold my interest. I need the visuals. Or the energy of the crowd. I saw MTH once and crowd intensity is 2nd only to BABYMETAL.
