Yes, when I was a kid I wanted this toy so bad. I saved my nickels and dimes for the toy, and price of a money order. And I got this tiny box they called a Foot Locker and these fragile tiny green flat toy soldiers. I was so disappointed. I remember swearing. Decades later my son's got us a game Axis and Allies and the ships and planes were similar.
I remember wanting these when I was a kid but seeing them now, I'm glad I never did. If I had scraped the money together and then received THAT, I would have been incredibly disappointed.
I was one of the kids who did order them and yes, I WAS disappointed! $1.75 for a kid back in 1980 was a lot of money unlike today. I remember being so excited when I got them in the mail only to see they were cheap inferior crap. 😳😒
My friend ordered this when we were living in Japan back in the 60s, and he was disappointed when it arrived. The soldiers and the vehicles were flat, except for the planes, which were tiny. It proved the old saying "You get what you pay for."
Been there, done that. My brother ordered the " lifelike frankensteins monster figure, over 7 feet tall, with glow in the dark eyes" from a comic book...and got a sheet of vinyl with a picture printed on it. I ordered an army of soldiers, with ships and planes and tanks...and got flat, hard plastic in about three different scales, that looked like game pieces for Risk. Don't even start me on sea monkeys....lol. Life lessons.
I wanted this set so badly before my friend bought it back in the late 70's. I could not imagine being excited about this set upon seeing it. These are cake decorations. We all laughed about it and I never saw it again.
I totally remember day-dreaming about ordering this set, somehow I was informed that they were not the typical 1:32-ish size army men. I think the neighborhood kid who was an authority on all things army-men told us that these were microscopic-small (of course he didn't really know anything). It's very impressive that you still have them!

I used to buy Horror Comics as a kid and loved these Ads of Knights, GI Combat, Rev War.....wished i had the money to buy one. Nice to see what i could have recd. Great video!
Almost 50 years later you revealed one of my childhoods biggest mysteries!! We were poor so this was something i always wanted along with the revolutionary set they offered.Thank you for letting me know what i went through life not knowing

A year later I bought the Revolutionary Soldiers those were better built they're small but they weren't Flat like these, I still have those Revolutionary Soldiers in their Original Box.
That was one of the nicer illustrations (that Rev. War battle scene) ! Another non-game set , that WERE Flats (but a softer , more detailed , not-as-flat , flats) were the Roman Soldiers. Had catapults to shoot little balls at the guys , which were blue and yellow colored for two armies . Had some chariots . That was a cool set and had maybe the best of all the illustrations.... a giant Roman battle scene . Who could resist ? " Mom , can I send for this ? It's only $1.75 ....... pleeeeaaassse !" Lol

Now I gotta find an old comic ad to display this hot rod of a gimmick haha

I remember receiving this box and I hid my disappoint from my grandmother who ordered it for me. I hated that they were thin almost 2 dimensional. I got a Roman soldier set that was the same. However the Civil War and revolution Era troops were much better.

I bought two of this type of comic book army sets in the 70's; one was 'Task Force', and the other was a ship game 'Fighting Ships'. Task Force had a paper base for the pieces and Fighting Ships had a sort of thin plastic mat that was supposed to be the ocean. Needless to say, they were both quite disappointing. Also bought a pair of binoculars that ended up being plastic and really didn't magnify anything much. They were a bit of a disappointment too, but I did put them to good use playing 'army' with my brothers and friends; staying out on Friday and Saturday nights until it was dark!
I unfortunately fell for this is in early 1970s and was so confused and disappointed when the little box arrived in the mail with a bunch of those hard crappy plastic 2D figures. The picture in the comic books was so amazing my 9 year old brain was expecting this giant Marx like set to arrive, should’ve read the fine print !!

Like most 12 year old kids … you gloss over the dimensions of the so called “Foot Locker” they came in (another lie !! Yeah “foot locker”!! O.k.”!! Pricks !!!!) … I should have ordered the darn “squirrel monkey”. At least (as I’m told anyway-look it up !!) you actually got a real live squirrel monkey !! …. Even after getting “bent over” by these fleece artist … I still took the bait on some of those other war game ads … I think I had “Task Force” …. Which was also a disappointment… but at least it was an actual game you could play with your friends … paper map with water and islands on it .. with tiny tiny playing pieces …. It was fun once you got over the initial shock of what came in the box !!!
Wow. I have recently gotten back into reading comic books and saw this ad in "World's Finest" #232 and wanted to see if anyone posted a video of them. What a rip off! The poor kids that sent in their $1.25 😢
Would have loved to get the revolution set in the UK in the late 60s but finding out a few years ago would have been disappointed but loved the illustrations in the comics,somehow got a roman chariot from somewhere.
Yes i do and i picked up a second one with a better box but the plastic color was different so it didn’t match troops that mine came with. Fascinating little gimmick. It fooled many of us into losing our innocence i think.
Does COD mean cash on delivery? I have been collecting since I was at least 13. I also play the 3DO games army men. I collect flags, currencies and retro games too! This looks really cool.
My Aurora Godzilla first one to glow in the dark of course was not based on 1950 butt 1960 King Kong versus Godzilla Aurora tried but Godzilla was not done right but as a kid I didn't care
I got 3-D sets from the cominc books in the early 70;s and never knew these 2D existed. I bought 5-6 of these sets and all were awesome 3D plastic pieces We put actually money and mailed it in =)
I remember mowing yards to earn that 1.75 just to order this couldn't wait. It took so long to arrive by mail I had forgotten that I had ordered them. I was do disappointed in the flat 2D soldiers I still played with them and am sure they lay somewhere in our backyard...
Same here I totally forgot about it and when it appeared the box was so small and when I opened it I was aghast at the hard plastic detail less flats. I was terribly disappointed.

Very much so. Traumatic in some ways cause we realized for the first time that things were not as we imagined them. A good lesson for life.

Some had exploding tanks with little red cap put in them.
I had 2 sets. They were like upright coins; they snapped easily. It wasn't 3D.
