      Indeed. I don't want this work to seem as a glorification of what he did, but more so to open a mental discussion, or with others, about how it really can just hit anyone, at anytime, and a switch is flipped if not assessed and take appropriate actions in a timely manner. We all look over massive cliffs, or passing telephone poles along the highway and wonder "what if", but of course we'd never do it, and brush it off as a silly 'call of the void' type thought. This is a tragic case of someone who did. Without help, one day they might call back to it. I made this when I was in a really bad place, and it happened around the timing of Russell's incident, so it was pretty numbing and I wanted to capture it so I could look back on it when I was better.
      A seemingly normal guy. Of course he was wreckless, in the fact that he flew a large aircraft with little / no knowledge on how to fly it, over populated areas, so not to say it's a grand ol' idea, however his intentions were not to harm anyone else, and I think what hits me most about this case, is that in a world of rage and shootings one man just wanted to fly.

      @jailbotmark1379 Před 4 lety +27

      He was hurting and he didn’t care what else happened so long as he got to live his dream for only a moment. It was tragic, but spoke a lot to how depression can manifest almost invisibly in men, and how this is often due to stigma surrounding men who open up about how they feel.

      It might be a bit rude to ask this question, and considering it has depression and might possibly be Nassault's friend or someone, but I am curious, but I don't mean to harm while doing so.
      If I may ask, what happened?
      Edit: Okay not actually a friend, but someone whom I don't know the reason of why they died or why they flew a Q400 Bombardier, but I'd still like to know the truth.

    I'm a SSgt in the Air Force and I work on airplanes for a living...fighter jets. I've worked on F-22s, T-38s, F-16s and F-35s. I've always wanted to fly. I cried my eyes out when I watched Richard Russel's flight. I'm not going to lie - I lost my composure watching this. I feel this way every single day I work on them. This is one of the only videos that has actually made me ugly cry. To me, this is the most beautiful video I've ever seen on CZcams.

      Tell somebody. Tell them about what you worked on during the day & how much you wished you could just get in it & take it for a spin; to see what you know it can do. There’s no shame in wanting to reach the sky while stuck on the ground. Sharing the dream, you’ll find you’re not alone in that. It’ll ease frustration, maybe turn it into joy, & could even open doors for you get your joy ride with a safe landing. The most free feeling in the world is to be honest & open about something important to you that you’ve been guarded about for no reason other than you think it’s foolish. It’s not. It’s real. Everyone has those things in their hearts, but not everyone is free enough to be open about them; turning them from unfulfilled wishes info joyful hopes.

      Somehow I made it to becoming a student pilot before getting out of high school, and I want to be a pilot in the Air Force so badly that it's almost crippling. The fear of not making the cut at all and all this time I spent, years I still have to spend attending college to get a bachelor's degree, just to have a decent possibility of being told no. Really eats you inside some days. Maybe I'll just work on em too if I get told no.

      Thanks mate, I'm glad this found its way to you. Occasionally I'll upload content that is themed differently than my Ace Combat stuff, but hopefully maintains at least quality cinematography. I make stuff all the time to practice technique and editing, and to play with themes and concepts that are relevent to me. These only lead to stronger Ace Combat, and other game content as I use these to learn more and more in the process..I'm glad you enjoyed it. Have a healthy week and enjoy each and every day. I hadn't even heard of this guy until now. It's weird, because three months after the flight was when I attempted, myself. No plane involved, just 8 months in hospitals and psychiatric. You said you wanted to start a discussion here, so I guess this is me discussing.
    From my experience looking back, I agree with a lot of people that the way we're treated fundamentally needs to change. But I'm not talking about mental illness being stigmatized or, obviously that's still an issue but it's been said already and I can live with people thinking I'm weird. What I mean is that even in actual psychiatric treatment, we're often lied to, stolen from, drugged against our will, and told seemingly at random whether we're getting better or not without having our own input considered. Looking back, it was probably insurance coverage that dictated when I was discharged, and honestly I think I've "gotten better" or just adjusted mostly from things I've learned myself or from people I'm close to. The real isolating thing was the long months spent not knowing if it was safe to turn to the people there to help us.
    I'm not saying this to invalidate anyone's positive experience with treatment and such, and there were some people here and there who really genuinely cared, but I think at its best it does as much harm as good.

    • @Nassault
      @Nassault  Před 2 lety +4

      Thanks for sharing your experience Dominic, I hope you're doing alright man. I agree with a lot of these statements, I've had similar experiences with therapy. I pay someone so they can talk to me but at the end of the day I never felt like it actually helped. I kept hearing it did from people other than me, and I'm sure it did for them. It was an hour less in my day, and a few hundred in the hole. I thought it was just kind of like a vapor where I could see it but could never feel it. It certainly helped to talk with them in really critical times when I was absolutely feeling crushed, but at those moments I can talk to my cat or my friend and feel the same dopamine hits, I just needed someone to talk to and didn't care who. Not saying therapy doesn't work, but it didn't really for me. Sure there are some amazing recovery stories regarding therapy.
      I'm totally "fine" now, but I still go into hibernation without telling anyone and will just disappear from the internet or my friends discord for months at a time.
      Being alone is something that does bring me joy, and while it's something I seek and love to camp, travel and live by myself, some people and social standards in general tend to think there is something 'wrong' with that by imply I'm sad because I'm alone or I'm alone because I'm sad, and this winds me into a sad state and becomes a feedback loop where I just scoff, remember why I like being alone and fuckoff for another 6 months. I love talking to myself, trusting myself, being by myself... I've camped many overnighters alone on all 4 of the Channel Islands, traveled to Japan for a month and just a backpack all by myself and did parts of the PCT all alone, camping with a fire in the middle of nowhere. I'm my own best friend, I love it...
      Personally I don't take meds, I did as a kid and I fucking hated it. I remember hallucinating my bedroom was on fire almost nightly. As a creative adult I kind of am scarred from that and don't want to alter or lose my creative process, and just don't want to take anything. I'm sure that's niave and we've come a long way since the late 90's but that stuff got me tossed. Your point of feeling odd returning to those people is something I can relate to as well. When $$$ is in the mix I always feel so disengenous dropping my old therapist or hospital a line, I just call one of my few friend instead.
      Keep your head up Dom and thanks for sharing. That means a lot, you're a good guy. DM me too if you're ever in an emotion pinch, we can always talk on Discord if you need it. Be well man.

    Very touching, and very well done. Based on the description I take it you're doing better yourself, and I'm happy to hear that - Mental health can be a real struggle and one of the best things we can do to address it is to be open and honest about it, and not to stigmatize it.
    Thank you for sharing this.

Was kind of bummed not to be able to see my work in a theater for the first time, but knowing the audience is made up of a lot of older people, I didn't want to go, stayed home and drank a red stripe and listened to Grover Washington Jr's "Feel's So Good" instead as it rained that night. Not bad, vibe still 8/10
