    A great follow-up tip, after you've played around a bit with the info in this video, is to then learn a single build and practice it. That's probably the most common, and crucial, bit of advice I see given to AoE2 players who are either new or wanting to improve their skill. Don't be super picky about which build as, once you've gotten good at it, it'll be much easier to pick up further builds to add to your repertoire.

      @dragonlloux Před 2 lety +40

      I am still unsure! I 100000% see what you mean, but at the same time the simple, clear and linear, logic design of these ones just massages some nice spots on my brain.

    • @John-cq9ew
      @John-cq9ew Před 2 lety +30

      To me the icons themselves feel fine but I take issue in the UI design itself, as in older games when an army was selected you could see the HP of individual units as well as the total amount of units in the army. I do agree that it is nice to be able to tell at a glance how many units of different types you have in the selected group but I would still prefer to be able to see their individual HP.
      I know you see their HP by looking at the bar ontop of the physical unit but it takes way longer to select the units that way.

      agreed. The UI is my least favorite part. It's just a little to sleek and modern to me, feels more like controlling an empire through a simulator than through an office or command post. Another note about "setting buildings on fire:" unless they changed something from the open stress test, buildings on fire will actually continuously take damage until they're repaired from their burning state. You can set a building on fire by getting it's hp low enough then walk away and let mother nature take care of it for you.
    It's slow as all get out, but if you, or your opponent, take some damage on your buildings and fail to repair it from burning, you could be in some trouble later as your buildings seem to collapse from nothing.

  • @Silentstrike46_
    @Silentstrike46_ Před 2 lety +1

    Thank you for mentioning that F1 key selects all military buildings, and F2 all economic buildings. Coming from games like SC2, WC3 and CNC3, I've gotten so used to putting all economic buildings on one hotkey so that I can find the upgrades, and all military buildings on another hotkey to help with production. This is such a nice quality of life improvement!

    To be honest I feel the light unit iis actually reclassification of 'trash' units, with some rebalance. Basically Aoe 4 archers actually fulfil the roles of the skirmisher (basically they counter spearmen and heavier archers). Scout lines are weaker and more specialized against archers (so they aren't as effective as general raiding unit and are weaker in melee)

    • @cybersteel8
      @cybersteel8 Před 2 lety +1

      I don't think the Scout unit in AOE4 is good against anything military. The Horseman unit has a specific bonus against Light Ranged units, making them very good at taking out archers, crossbowmen, cavalry archers and handcannoneers.

      Sort of. AOE4 Archers attack faster and have longer range than crossbows to the point they pretty much deal the same dps if hitting a target neither gets a bonus against. Compare that to AOE2 skirmishers who basically only do 1 damage to anything they don't counter. AOE4 Archers also lack the armor skirmishers have.

      @@user-kx6wl8hz8v Having played the technical stress test I think AoE4 will be successful in the short term and in casual play at least as it feels really nice to play (Not having building hotkeys, set aside... Bit bummed about that). But in terms of professional play I am a bit unsure, as the game did stick pretty close to what the older games in the franchise do but still experiments quite a bit with new mechanics like more varied civs and walkable walls etc... Also the game balance felt a bit lob sided in the technical stress test and I feel like certains civs overperform by quite a margin but this be fixed by just tweaking the numbers a bit.
      Also one thing I have to mention having played both AoE2 and AoE4 (Not a AoE3 player) is that AoE4 feels "slower" but faster at the same time. A lot of the functions like gather rate have been increased and units feel like they walk a tiny bit slower than before, this might be because the game now runs at real time and not sped up by a factor of 1,7 as AoE2 does.
      AoE4 has more in-depth economy as well, no longer will you just be like "I want to make x amount of [Insert unit here] so I need x amount of villagers collecting this resource" as there are now more ways than one to get resources (civ dependent) for example the Rus can hunt animals to get gold and the Mongols get Food, Wood and gold by burning enemy buildings. Also the influence mechanic, I would have liked to see it used more in the game but pretty much every civ in the game has at least some type of building that has an influence "aura" for example and probably the most substantial, the Abbasids - They have an aura of influence around their landmark that they build at the start of the game that expands every time you construct a building in it (All buildings touched by the aura will make it bigger as well as contribrute towards the golden age bonus) and the more buildings you have inside the influence the higher your golden age bonus will be, like faster unit production and higher villager gather rates. A more mundane bonus would be the English farms being able generate gold if they are adjacent to a mill.
      A bit worrying is how the devs have reacted to some feedback like people said that the game is too zoomed in and would like to zoom the camera out a bit more and this has been answered by "BuT YoU CaNt PlAy ThE GaMe ThAT WaY", which is a bit odd as the camera already zooms out near hilly terrain so...
      A bit ranty all over the place comment but bellow you have a TLDR
      TLDR
      AoE4 feels a lot like playing AoE2 but with a bit more depth in some areas and a bit more in others. I would recommend to at least try the game if you can get over the graphics (In my opinion they are not bad but are a bit cartoony, and I can see why some people don't like them). Game will probably see loads of casual play but most likely wont get pro players too interested.

    Tried to find you on twitter... But alas. Ok, this was great.. especially the "F1…F2" revelation. Another video that would be good is a hotkey overview. I know there are other handy short cuts that I have missed that would make quality of life q whole lot easier. Even selecting all TCS at this point is hard! .. how to autofill farms ... When first planting.. I know there is a way of doing that...

    With control groups.. It's like SC2 control groups (maybe Aoe2 as well but I haven't played that), with control will set whatever units or buildings you have selected as the control group.
    However shift + number will add the units or buildings to a control group, without reseting the control group.
    I haven't tested this one, but alt + number will likely remove the units or buildings selected from any other control group, and put them only to the control group selected. This also does not add units like shift does, it resets the control group that you binded them to.

    I personally start my games with 4 villagers on the sheep, 2 to build 2 houses and then transition into wood, after that around 6 more to food and the rest (before the next age) to gold, depending on what civilization I'm playing and what type of map it is.
    I tweak it a little for Chinese sense their tax collectors make 15% extra gold (when over seeing gold mines) so I usually throw 2 to 3 extra workers on wood at the end of dark age.
    And water maps I put around 4 on wood before worrying about gold.

    Hey SOTL, I'd be interested in a video on Champions and Cavaliers. Longsword and Knight have been hammered, but I feel like Champs soft counter heavy cav from Non-Paladin Civs.

    I have a question: Can you have CPU's fight each other and be a spectator like in AoE II? Are there cheats?
